Succeeding in Law School
As the Director of Suffolk University Law School’s Academic Support Program, Professor Ramy begins receiving phone calls from new 1Ls as early as May. Their common question: “What do I need to do to succeed in law school?” Professor Ramy has written the second edition of Succeeding in Law School to help answer this question.
This edition of the book has several new chapters that are geared toward success both in law school and in the job market. A new chapter on legal analysis addresses one of the most common problems professors see on law school exams — the absence of the counterargument. New materials on interviewing techniques, creating a writing sample, and writing a résumé are designed to help students market themselves to prospective employers. Whether students are seeking advice in the summer months or are looking for help once the school year has begun, this book is an important tool for helping them get the most out of their abilities.

I have been trying to enjoy my summer before law school and have made it my business to avoid all books about law school and instead to savor the peaceful moments I have left before 1L. I was getting a suit fitted for law school and my tailor, who also is about to start his 1L, highly recommended this book to me. I lifted my “boycott” and picked it up for $4 on ebay.
Most of the book is very easy to read, humorous, and on the lighter side. There are a few dense chapters—how to write case briefs, research memos, and taking exams—but unfortunately those are all a huge part of law school so I don’t hold them against the book/author! This book gives a great overview of the first year of law school, from how to handle stress, scheduling, what to expect, how to study, and the above “dense” material.
The reason I haven’t wanted to read a book like this, or many of the others like it, is I don’t want ot be overwhelmed and be MORE anxious and nervous than I already am—I don’t want to be scared straight! I obviously haven’t been to law school so I can’t say how helpful/truthful the contained information and tips within this particular book are, but it has helped me calm my anxieties now before starting. I think it has a great calming approach and gives you a great intro to a lot of things that are going to be commonplace within the next 3 years.

This book gives you a broad perspective of the first year of law school. The title should be "How to Succeed in the First Year of Law School" instead of succeeding in law school. I recommend this book to anyone who is applying to law school or is a 1L.

Has some decent information in it - but take it with a grain of salt because every professor will have different rules and expectations! Loosely use the info to get through the start of school
