The Duke and the Runaway Bride by Maybel Bardot is a super steamy drama-filled historical romance with classic tropes that will keep you entertained from page one to done!

Known as the "Runaway Bride" for fleeing her first engagement, 23 y.o. Beatrice Bolton, finds herself wanting to escape a second engagement after meeting the horrid man. Seeing no other option, she plans to compromise herself and deal with whatever consequences come her way.

29 y.o. Edwin Clarke, Duke of Walford, finds himself in the middle of Beatrice's scheme, agreeing to a marriage of convenience. Edwin's reputation has earned him the moniker "Cruel Duke." Despite his ruthless nature, he is gracious and protective of those he loves. What begins as a marriage of convenience between Edwin and Beatrice soon ignites with undeniable passion.

Edwin and Beatrice face a challenging journey to achieving their happy ending - a wildly amusing journey, which includes an ex-fiancé feeding lies to the scandal sheets, an impulsive heroine who can't keep out of trouble, well-meaning family members, an emotionally guarded hero, and grand declarations of love.

My only gripe is that I didn't particularly like Beatrice because of her selfish and naive actions throughout the story, which caused life-altering consequences for herself and others. It was hard to agree with her motives, but she was certainly entertaining, and I was happy to see her and Edwin ultimately find love.

- Dual POV
- Standalone w/ HEA + Epilogue
- Safe-ish: H is promised to another woman and found in a compromising position with the h. There is no love between OW and H. OW drama mentioned above. Virgin h. No cheating between MCs. No sharing. Third-act-breakup w/ 2 wk separation.

Common plot with different characters - 3.75 stars

This was a marriage of convenience between Beatrice and Edwin after they were found in a compromising position after Edwin happened to walk in his best friend’s room where Beatrice was waiting to trap his friend in order to avoid marrying the old, terrible man that her father had chosen for her to marry. Edwin was none as the “Cruel Duke” and Beatrice was known as the “Runaway Bride.” Although Edwin was not cruel at all, she was actually a runaway bride. Edwin was a good hero who was misunderstood because he was afraid to be viewed as weak and taken advantage of, like his father, but he still was very thoughtful of his new wife, that had basically trapped him. Beatrice was not a very likable character initially because she seemed to judge him and be angry when she should have been more appreciative and honestly, sorry for her actions. She just seemed to make decisions that negatively affected other people and didn’t really take accountability even when she apologized. Once they started to bond as a couple, I warmed to her because she seemed to be different with him. They were trusting one another and working as a team until she decided to sneak out without telling him. When she was caught and he was angry (because he was scared for her), she was mad at him because she didn’t like his response and she ran away again. In my opinion, She just went back to her selfish ways, and she always seemed so immature even though she was the oldest sibling in her family. It became tedious when she just continued to run away every time things didn’t go her way. It just didn’t make any sense how easily she would run away when she claimed to love her husband. She was willing to leave him for not saying he loved her when she hadn’t even told him her feelings. I didn’t like that it always came down to Edwin fighting fir her to come back when she never seemed to really accept her part in anything. Her stubbornness seemed so selective. Her character was the one thing that I didn’t like about this book.

If you like a story with some steamy scenes where the heroine is stubborn and quick to react without thinking while everyone else seems to deal with the consequences and a hero that is afraid to love until he almost loses it all, this may be a book for you. Personally, I think this plot is a little overdone, and I feel like I’m reading the same story with different names. I also don’t enjoy one sided relationships where it seems only one person is doing all the compromising. There were other things that were good though. The side characters were funny and well developed and offered entertainment when other things were frustrating. I gave this book 3.75 stars, rounded to 4.

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review with my honest opinion.

Who is Spreading the Rumours?

I enjoyed this well-written story. Beatrice had already run away from one man. When her father tried to force her to marry Lord Mutton, she could not face marrying the elderly gentleman. At a ball, her friend suggested she should compromise a man so she would be forced to marry him. She chose Lord Pemberton but when she went to his room, it was not Lord Pemberton, it was Duke Edwin. They are caught together and agree to marry. They try hard to make their marriage work but one person is determined to ruin it for them. Will they be able to overcome the rumours and be happy together. Read on and enjoy.

Hot Duke catches runaway bride!

Beatrice decides to take matters into her own hands when she is set up for yet another horrendous arranged marriage. Mistaken for someone else, Edwin is accosted by Beatrice when she puts her plan in motion. Through many scandals c and rumors these two find their way to each other despite all the talk. Complete with jealous ex, I just love the jilted lovers, who causes no end of trouble for the couple. A little too long, but a great read and a real feel good story as both hero and heroine learn about themselves and each other.

Running Away with the Duke

I enjoyed meeting both families. Together they are funny. There were many trails but hope all works. When he found her in his friends bedroom. He thought that his friend was setting him up. But as it turns out her had offered her to an old gentlemen this was the reason she was in the friends room because she had planned to seduce him. But things didn't end that way. Any one would enjoy this book so get it.

The heroine is a bit impulsive. She ran away from one wedding and now she is trying to get out of an arrangement made by her father. The hero accidentally falls into her trap as he enters his friend’s room where she lays in wait. They must get married to save reputations. The hero is reserved. The heroine is kind, but doesn’t seem have for thought. An ex girlfriend raises some havoc to add a little drama. It was a good read, but maybe a bit too long for the storyline.

Running for Happiness

I love a strong heroine ! Beatrice was betrothed to a Duke, she doesn’t want to marry him, so she ran, only for her younger sister had to marry him instead. Now father pressing her to marry an older man, can’t run again, but meets a handsome hunk, but her nemesis Agnes has her cap set for him! When Edwin, Duke shows up and proposes a marriage, Beatrice says okay! But Agnes promises revenge, she’s mean! Very interesting book!

Great Story!

I loved this book! The characters were amazing and the story so captivating that I read almost the entire book in one night. I stayed up all night as I couldn’t put it down. The additional story line with Agnes kept me on the hook wondering what she would do next! I love this author’s books and this has been my favorite so far!

Simply Marvelous!!!

Love Edwin's and Beatrice's love story. Their beginning was quite unconventional. He was afraid to let himself feel any emotion, for fear it would make him appear weak. She had made mistakes in her past that she fear would effect her future happiness. Together they became a committed, supportive loving couple. Hugely Recommend!!!

What a fantastic story.

A man who doesn't believe in love, a woman who seems to cause chaos wherever she goes. Of course, it won't work. Will it? Read a roller coaster of a story that pulls you backwards and forwards.

interesting story!

I love the characters and how they interact. Maybel does a really good job making them real, having them argue and as real people would. The villain is a really good one! I enjoyed this book very much!
