The Devil's Backbone

There’s never been an evil man that Cassidy Callaghan couldn’t sniff out. Her life in 1870s Nevada is built on justice… and revenge. Every bounty she ropes in is a stone turned over in her search for the one man she hasn’t been able to find.

Jack Ransom, the man who murdered her parents.

Outlaw turned lawman James Moone dutifully stands guard, always awaiting Cassidy’s return. She’s got a sour disposition and a worse temper. Moone is the only man in the West who’d call her a friend. One who’s won her hard-earned trust. He’s loved her longer than he realized, thorns and all, and is determined to protect her from the truth of his past—and Jack Ransom—whether she likes it or not.

When Cassidy finally gets her shot at Ransom, she commits to playing the role of a lady she isn’t. As his favorite, it’ll be easy to stab him in the heart. 𝘌𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 if she holds it in the palm of her hand.

Moone fears she’s gone too far, too deep into her role—too far from her plan. He’s convinced if he doesn’t break her free from it, he’ll lose her forever. But Cassidy isn’t about to let anything stand in her way. Not corsets, danger, betrayal—or a complicated craving.

The romance genre is really, really missing out on westerns! I know we have "cowboy romances," but those books are with contemporary cowboys. I want the wild west. Which is what this book is!

Cassidy Callaghan had to grow up fast. After the murder of her mother and father, the one thing she's grown up to want is revenge. Revenge on Jack Ransom, the man who murdered them. As a bounty hunter, she's help put away outlaw after outlaw but hasn't come close to him.

Until she finally gets the bounty she's been waiting on. James Moone, Deputy, is scared about putting her on the track. He knows how dangerous Ransom is and that going down this path is going to get her hurt or killed.

Cassidy can't be stopped. She's waited too long for this. She's ready to manipulate and get the revenge she's been seeking. It gets very, very dangerous here. There's plenty of times that I feared for Cassidys life. And there are losses too. I wanted to yelp when they came on page. But it's a western and in westerns, the good guys die young. (Not naming names, but it's heartbreaking!)

Moone and Cassidy have some chemistry. But they both have a way of messing it all up! Well... it's the secrets that do it.

There's shootouts and soiled doves, whiskey, saloons. I can't wait for book two!

I feel like I need to apologize for the person I’m about to become after reading this book. I read The Devil’s Backbone on Sunday, in essentially one sitting, and I have not stopped thinking about this book all week. I could not put it down; I was so consumed by the story. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like The Devil’s Backbone. The story itself was incredible. I sometimes find myself mostly only caring about the romance aspect of a book, but that was absolutely not the case with The Devil’s Backbone. I was invested in every single part. I loved the characters; they’re flawed and real. Cassidy and Moone were absolutely everything. This book made me feel so many emotions I’m still reeling from it in the best way possible. I cannot wait to reread.

"I’m not much for reading, but if you were a book, you’d be a well-worn, well-loved volume. One whose pages I’d thumb through every chance I got, even if the ending was bound to break my heart."

Yeehaw I am back in my cowboy romance era but make it the Wild West. Thank you so much Kirsten Bohling for sending me an ARC copy of this book, it was an absolute pleasure to read the beginning of this series and I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

Ever since I was little, I have been obsessed with the Wild West so when I found out that an author I really adore was coming out with a romance book set in the Wild West I couldn't contain my excitment. And after reading this one I can tell you right now that it does not disappoint! Kirsten Bohling has delivered a really compelling story full of tension, angst, sorrow, romance, and action with The Devil's Backbone and I think that if we tend to have similar reading taste that this should be one that you check out!

Cassidy Callaghan is a spitfire bounty-hunter who is out trying to find leads that will get her closer to avenging her family. She grew up as an orphan, caring for herself and building up a hard exterior to keep everyone at arm's length. She doesn't think she needs anyone and has tunnel vision regarding the man who killed her parents while she saw everything. I loved Cassidy; she fit the bill for the type of character that I love as a female lead. She's strong and independent, stubborn to a fault and while others might paint her as unlikable - I like her a whole lot.

James Moone is the town's deputy (but there is definitely more to him than meets the eye) who essentially gives Cassidy these bounties and keeps her in check. But he is so down bad for her, it's not even funny. I won't go into too much about his story because I think that it'll be better enjoyed reading as it is told through the story but just know that this man is definitely my favorite character and I'm actually in love with him. He ticks all the boxes for me and I just want to shower him with all my kisses. Hello new book boyfriend. I can't wait to get more of you in the next book.

This book is one of those books that has things unraveling in a way that will keep you interested and on your toes while you read it. You'll think one thing is going to happen (or could never happen) and then you'll be surprised. Kirsten's writing is gorgeous with it's prose. I cannot tell you how many highlights I have saved on my Kindle from this book. It's a story that you will want to sit down and devour and then leaves you ready to consume the next book.

- wild west romance
- dual pov and with a few dual timeline things
- actual bodice ripping
- there's only one bed
- hurt/comfort
- touch her and I help her kill you
- slow burn
- revenge plot
- bisexual fmc
- epic banter and tension
- he is down bad
- a villain that'll have you questioning everything
- written for the rats (iykyk)

Cassidy’s quest for revenge had me hooked from the beginning. Orphaned as a child, she is now a skilled bounty hunter whose ultimate bounty is Jack Ransom, the man who killed her parents.

James Moone, is sheriff’s deputy of Gallow Gorge. In an effort to protect Cassidy from the ghosts of his past James has been holding out on a bounty that will lead Cassidy to the devil she seeks.

If you’re a fan of a stabby FMC then you will love Cassidy! She is firey and stubborn, almost to a fault. Moone will be your next book boyfriend, trust me!

Author Kirsten Bohling does such an amazing job weaving a story that brings to life the past that shapes the characters along their current struggles and adventures. Dropping in historical and literary references that every book or history lover will appreciate. I can’t wait for the next book to pick us up from the cliff she left us hanging on!

It started off strong for me as the western setting really pulled me in and the pacing was great! At first it gave me big Godless vibes for anyone who is a fan of that show.

Overall it was a fun read that would probably make a great vacation book, however, the “can’t say I love you” trope went on too long for me. I love a slow burn, but once it becomes complete emotional immaturity I lose interest.

With all of that said, for folks who love romances I can totally see this being many people’s cup of tea, it just wasn’t mine.

the ‘cowboy romance’ to ‘badass cowgirl western’ pipeline is FUN, y’all.
(note this is an unrated review because of a major trigger at the end of this book – the trigger is a plot spoiler though, so read at your own risk!)

i didn’t even know i needed a bounty hunting kissin’ kate barlow vibe FMC until i had this in my hands. as someone who grew up in a house where old black and white western movies played 24/7 on loop on weekends, i never thought i’d voluntarily pick up a western book for fun but i fear i immediately need 700 more western romances in my life because the vibes were immaculate.

cassidy callaghan is a badass bounty hunter hellbent on avenging the parents she saw murdered in cold blood as a child – growing up an orphan, with her only friend in the world being an orphan horse, she’s learned to be tough as nails – a trait necessary to hunt, trap, and then drag the baddest of the bad guys into the sheriff for her reward. and also to get her one step closer to the ultimate prize: the legendarily evil, powerful man who murdered her parents. the sheriff assisting her on this journey? james moone, handsome heartthrob who is terribly in love with cassidy, who barely gives him the time of day.

the bones of this and the execution in the first half are FANTASTIC. i couldn’t set it down, i devoured it like a man starved in the desert, but be warned this has an epic trigger that made me sob, rage, and want to DNF. it’s a major plot spoiler, so i’ll put it at the end in case you don’t have any triggers and want to go into this one with no knowledge.

the writing is great, the characters are fascinating, there’s ACTUAL BODICE RIPPING, but the back half i struggled with, because cassidy’s journey takes a turn that felt terribly out of character based on her entire childhood and adulthood being singularly focused on one goal. i had a hard time buying into the circumstance shift in the back half of the book, and that, mixed with the surprise trigger, made this too difficult to rate, so i’m leaving it unrated and up to your personal discretion to decide whether you want to give it a whirl.

pick this up if you want a hot, badass cowgirl FMC, excellently curated western vibes, and a fast-paced plot that throws you multiple curveballs throughout. and know this isn’t a standalone – there will be a book two that follows the same characters!

TRIGGER SPOILER BELOW. do not read past this point if you don’t have any triggers and don’t want to know!

if you’re someone who is sensitive to the horrible, tragic on-page death of beloved animals, do yourself a favor and skip this one. imho it is not a happy ending to a story if the beloved sidekick pets die – just pain for the sake of pain.

Thanks to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this novel!

Cassidy is an FMC with a brutal start. A fateful day in her youth sends her on a quest for vengeance that leads her to her career as an (excellent) bounty hunter when we meet her in her present day. Her job brings her in close contact with deputy James Moone, an honorable man with a checkered past he'd like to forget. Moone loves Cassidy's sass and in return she loves... no one but her horse.

When Moone can no longer hide a bounty from Cassidy that he knows will send her straight into the sights of the man she's been seeking, he tags along to help. Little does Cassidy know Moone has a secret and that they're about to be playing a dangerous game of deception.

If you loved Netflix's women-focused Western "Godless", the classic "Tombstone", or any American Western in general, you'll enjoy this novel. It was a slow burn, friends to lovers, that had me asking myself "will they/won't they".

Little hints are woven between the past and present that had me theorizing, and there are several parts that left me in tears. It IS the start of a series, so don't expect all the answers by the end, but I think you'll be satisfied where Bohling leaves things-wanting more.

I can't wait to see what the next chapter holds for Cassidy and Moone.

Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶🌶.🫑 (2.5)

This whole story is unlike anything I've ever read before. A wild-west romance adventure. Cassidy is out for vengeance, and it will be hers. She is one of the most determined and fierce FMCs I've met to date on par with Jude Duarte.
Cassidy has her eyes only on revenge, no matter how much James Moone tries to glue himself to her ass (utterly adorable, IMO).
The duo pairs up to take down one of the largest villians they have ever come across, and for both of them, it's personal. There is so much banter and angst.
The anxiety is REALLLLL throughout this read. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop due to the crazy amount of sneaking and dark corner conversations that take place *bites nails*.
There was a point where even I was falling for Cassidys nemesis, damn he could be charming when he wasn't torturing people or killing in cold blood.
Cassidy and Moone are the best duo, I love that Cassidy doesn't want to care but still does against all her wild instincts. She's the feral barn cat that Moone wants to adopt. Moone constantly taking care of Cassidy after she befalls harm is just another one of the many reasons he's a great MMC. There were many tragic deaths ...which were upsetting and graphic. My poor heart.
What I really love is how even after finishing, I am still thinking about this book, the interactions, the scenes, and the what ifs.
I can't wait for the story to continue. The ending leaves us with some closure and many more questions. I can't wait to see where Kirsten is planning on taking this story!

ARC provided by Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“I'm starting to think you can't live without some kind of vendetta, Freckles”

I would like to thank Lake Country Press and the Author for a copy of this ARC. Did I tell ya'll I formatted a book? Me, amatuer bookbinding covid hobbyist, formatted a real life book. And honestly, reading this was one hell of a ride that I wish didn't have to end.

Kirsten Bohling is an author that holds a special place in my heart after her debut, and now two years later, she is gracing my bookshelf again. While I adored We'd Know By Then, the growth in Bohling's writing is evident, and the twists of the book kept me on my feet.

Cass might just be one of my favorite heroines of all time, and for those that have read the Throne of Glass series, I could compare her to Aelin in so many ways. So much stolen from her as a child, yet she is still so young and couldn't help but be caught up in the beauty of a grand life offered to her, making her forget her convictions. She tries so hard to be independent, but the chapters where she got to be all dolled up and lost in that world have really stuck with me.

But, in this idea of letting girlhood survive in a world of darkness, Cassidy Callaghan stands tall. Her wit, her humor, her resilience, and her humanity, had me in love with her from the very beginning. Genuinely there are so many amazing quotes I wish I could post, but you need to experience them for yourself. I could wax poetic about the Casino scene for hours if you let me.

Now, the romance--I say it again and again, I'm and ETL girly, and I just need some angst in my romance books and this book delivered--not with one, but two potential love interests. Cass is the grumpy to Moone's sunshine, and their banter was top tier, but if you give me villain sugar daddy energy in Ransom... I'm going to take the bait and root for him.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a love triangle. The book makes it very clear who the intended love interest is, but I'm a glutton for punishment so of course I'm going to root for the evil one of the two.

I loved her moments of vulnerability and sass with Moone. Their relationship is this slow burn, will-they-won't-they, but at times his pining toward Cass made me less interested in him. That and his secrets because, BOY does he have a lot of them. He talks about how much he respects Cass, and that Cass appreciates how he treats her like an equal, but behind closed doors he leans almost too protective that makes me believe he truly doesn't see her as such.

That's my only criticism... genuinely, and that's character based. The rest of the book I was on the edge of my seat binge reading because I needed to know what will happen and how all of the pieces were going to weave together. For my fans of Fantasy Romance, I'm begging you to give this a try.

This historical romance gives you that high stakes energy we often see in fantasy, and it isn't afraid to pull punches. No one is safe, and I am sure to take my Game of Thrones training with me into book two, and remember to not get attached. Cassidy is a heroine I will not soon forget, and I am so thankful that her story isn't over yet.

See y'all for Bargains & Bounties #2, Fall 2025 <3

"You spend an afternoon with the monster who murdered your parents; you let him whisper sugary sweet poison in your ear and let yourself fall for this life. Is that what you want— is that what I need to do for you to finally see me the way I see you? To want me that way?"

🐴🌵🏜️

Since the age of nine, Cassidy Callaghan has been driven by a single purpose: finding the man who murdered her parents and exacting revenge. To track him down, she has hunted bounty after bounty, waiting for the one that will lead her to justice.

Deputy Sheriff James Moone, a rumored bad boy turned good, has been withholding the bounty Cassidy seeks, trying to protect her from the dangers he knows await. But when he has no choice but to give in, he agrees—on one condition: he’s coming with her.

Set against the backdrop of the late 19th century Wild West, Cassidy and Moone's journey uncovers the answers they've been desperately seeking while revealing unexpected mysteries. Along the way, a budding romance blossoms, offering a glimmer of hope in their otherwise dark world—or perhaps a dangerous distraction from their true goals.

🐴🌵🏜️

Kirsten and I will forever have personal beef over the complete emotional distress she caused when I read her debut "We'd Know By Then", if you know you know. Obviously I have forgiven her but I will never forget, and I was very excited to dive into her sophomore release "The Devil's Backbone", the first book in this new trilogy.

And I ate this baby up. The balance between romance, some murder mystery, dead parents leaving a lot of unanswered questions that both you and Cassidy are trying to figure out, time in the wild west but then also time in fancy dresses?! Plus that added bonus of going through the internal struggle of deciding whether or not the most definitely evil guy should just marry the fmc... just for the bit y'know? I've got 30+ pages of annotations on my Kobo as I tried to peace together the puzzle of what happened in the past leading up to the inciting incident. Big fan of books that entice me to want to start theorizing about where it's going to go, I do love to use my brain sometimes.

Our two POV characters, Cassidy and Moone are two lovable individuals who I would not hesitate to throttle multiple times throughout this book. But I appreciate messy characters, makes them feel a bit more real, even if they raise my blood pressure on multiple occasions. Their relationship build up felt well paced, and we do get a flashback or two of their interactions prior to the start of the book which helps support how they develop throughout this story. Now, both of our main characters have a got a lot of shit to work through but from the past and present, which results in some character development and subsequent regression, but I have faith they can sort their business out in the end!!

I will note that when I first finished this book I did not know it was a trilogy (because apparently I blocked out the "Bargains & Bounties #1" on the GoodReads page) and I immediately began spiralling because there were so many things I needed resolution for. However, my anxiety dropped markedly once I found out this will continue on, and I instead got to spend over an hour with my bestie rereading the last few chapters and theorizing where this story will go next, which is much more fun!!!

Knowing it is a trilogy, I do think this first book could've ended a bit earlier, it's definitely not a quick read, but in Kirsten I trust 🫡.

As always, I am transparent with any biases I may hold so please note that my comments about Kirsten and I having beef are in jest, I in fact adore Kirsten in spite of the trauma she has inflicted on me. I genuinely appreciate her allowing me to send my unhinged and unsolicited notes and thoughts as I read through The Devil's Backbone without immediately blocking me. 🫶🏻

This releases September 3rd, and I do believe there are still some wicked preorder goodies up for grabs, so if a romance set in the Wild West featuring two baddies with messed up pasts and oodles of generational trauma and drama, I highly recommend giving it a read!

🐴🌵🏜️

THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE is where the Cowboy Romance readers meet the Historical Romance readers. The old timey setting serves Cassidy’s quest for revenge and is the perfect excuse to indulge in the dusty cowboy fantasy that is Deputy James Moone.

Be ready for an adventure from page one. From heartbreak to swoony romance and plent of gunslinging inbetween, theres a lil bit of everything to experience. Theres also the very relatable through line of finding your place in the world. Cassidy and Moone fight their way though (literally actually fight) trauma and toxic relationships of their past.

And for you villain lovers, make room for a red flag to tempt you to the dark side. Jack Ransom may charm you into second guessing your conviction to see him pay for his crimes.

Did I mention yet the actual bodice ripping? Because thete is actual bodice ripping.

Thank you to author, Kirsten Bohling for an advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review.

Absolutely loved this wild west romance! It truly has everything I love about it this kind of setting - horses, bounty hunters, saloons, shoot outs, outlaws, ball gowns, literal bodice ripping - all the good stuff. Not only that, the characters are so well done. Everyone is morally grey and they make hard decisions for both good and bad reasons. The romance in this book - LOVED. We get tension and slow burn and it is so wonderfully done. I ate this book up and I couldn't stop reading, especially once Cassidy starts laying her trap for Jack Ransom, the devilish one she's been seeking revenge on for murdering her family. The ending too was unexpected and still satisfying. I so enjoyed reading this book and I think anyone who's looking for a fiery FMC, a complicated love story with tension and slow burn, and a rough and rowdy time in the old west will be happy with this one.

Let me just say: I read this book by the cover alone. I did not read anything about it or the synopsis. I did not hear of this book. It showed up on my FYP and I said, “that cover is really pretty!” *adds to TBR*

I then started reading this book and y’all, I COULD NOT STOP!! I had to be told to go to bed like a child staying up late because I could not stop reading this book. I truly loved this book and everything about it.

The slow burn, the action, the plot, the characters, ALL OF WAS AMAZING! I loved every moment of this book, and I seriously could not stop reading it. I have already recommended it to so many people. And will continue to tell people about this book!

I could not guess how this book was going to end, and so I was shocked with the ending. It has me not so patiently waiting for the next book.

Oh my. What a TREAT this book was, in everything from the gorgeous prose to the extremely accurate names for all the old western people and places. The characters and their interactions were sometimes playful, sometimes joyful, sometimes fun—but mostly they were true to the times: gritty, hardened, just a little desperate. I fell a little in love with Cass but a LOT in love with James Moone. The day I get book 2 in my hands will be a happy one indeed!

This is the first western romance I've ever read, and it delivered! The beginning is a little slow, but once the plot picks up and all the characters are introduced, I found it really hard to tear myself away. The banter between the characters is impeccable—not only between the FMC and MMC but also between the FMC and the villain! And that ending!!! All the pining in the world. I can't wait for the sequel.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The author’s writing is very good! Captivating and easy to fall into. Moone was my favorite character. HOWEVER, the TW list is inaccurate. It’s not “animal harmed”; it’s animal killed. And I HATE when authors kill animals in their books. There is literally no reason you have to do that. I took stars off for that alone. If that didn’t happen, it would have easily been a 4.5 star read.

(It's crazy that I once sat next to the author in Seattle, not knowing the beautiful novel that was brewing in her mind, while we both gushed over Schwab. Thank you Kirsten for trusting me as one of your ARC readers. I'm tremendously proud of you!)

Westerns. I've never read a western before, but I'm so happy this was my first! This is a story of revenge, grief, and love. It's about a wild woman full of grit, a deputy trying to protect her from evil, and the love of a good horse.

Personally, I adored Cassidy. She's stubborn, independent to a fault, and strong. She counts on nobody except her horse, and her quick draw to drop a guilty thug. She is a wild fire, and reminds me a lot of my mom, actually. They are cut from the same cloth, made "weak" only from their huge hearts.

This brings me to Moone. He is the rain that tames the flame. He protects, refills, loves, redirects, and rejuvenates Cass when she can't do it herself. He is such an interesting character, one that balances up on a knife's edge ethically. I found myself more interested in his origins than Cassidy's. The dramatic irony is delicious, and the way he lies to Cass is beautiful. He does what he does out of love, and I cannot fault him. I'd do the same if I was in his shoes.

Randsom is a force. He's the law, the money, the one pulling all the strings. He's gross and alluring. I couldn't look away. I wanted her to stab him immediately. I wanted her to kiss him. He is a character you love to hate; hate to love. I'm only sad that it took Cass so long to see his true colors.

Solo. Solo made me bawl. I'm always mad when writers decide to (spoilers)... You know.

SPOILERS:

My only criticism is the levels of emotional reactions shown my Cassidy seemed inconsistent or incongruent with the situation. Cody absolutely wrecks her, almost makes her catatonic after she realizes one of the thugs she shot has children, yet after what happens with Solo and then Daisy, she grieves them unproportionally. This is only my opinion, I know the plot had to continue forward. But I think losing her horse, her only family member, her best friend would devastate her more than a stranger. A stranger that burnt down a whole town, might I add. Same with Daisy. Daisy was like a younger sister sneaking her books and looking up to Cass. When Randsom does what he does with the church and Daisy -- I expected more of a reaction. It just felt glazed over with lust and sex, and the numbing made me so angry! I wanted Cassidy to feel it all. I wanted those two things to wreck her just for a little while, because they mattered so stinking much to her. This inconsistent grief is what keeps it from a five star rating for me.

(I received an ARC of this book)

Well, as a historical fiction lover I knew this would be up my alley but had no idea how much fun I’d have and how deeply I would fall for these characters!

A slow burn historical fiction/romance set in the Wild West, Cassidy Callaghan has a taste for revenge against the man who killed her parents, Jack Ransom. But she’ll have to get extra close to him to enact her vengeance, much to the dismay of her longtime friend and deputy James Moone.

James Moone THE MAN THAT YOU ARE! Not only was Moone a great love interest but I found myself wanting to know more and more about his past as the story went on. I even loved learning about Ransom, the villain, who pulls us in in very much the same way he ropes in Cassidy. The sort of pseudo-love triangle between them all was so juicy!

There were many other smaller things I loved as well such as the subtle LGBTQIA+ representation, (what seemed to me like) accurate dialogue for the time period, and descriptions that painted a clear picture but never bored me. Also THAT ENDING!! That’s all I’ll say on that…

And of course, the best part of this journey is going on it with the strong-willed, stubborn, and clever Cassidy. Such a great FMC, she shines in every way and is flawed in ways that we as readers can get behind and keep up with.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves slow burn romance, historical fiction, or just any kind of adventure! Thank you Kirsten for taking me on this journey and trusting me with your book!

The Devil’s Backbone is a Wild West historical romance and the first book in a new series. The story is told through dual POV and multiple timelines, making for very intricate storytelling. The book also features several popular romance tropes, including One Bed, Touch Her and Die, Found Family, Love Triangle, and Slow-burn Romance. The story is filled with adventure, steamy romance, gunslinging battles, and witty, captivating banter. There are also some darker themes explored in this book, including unresolved childhood trauma, toxic relationships, and revenge plotting, making the story multi-layered.

The main characters in this book are all complex, flawed, and extremely compelling. Cassidy Callaghan, the bisexual protagonist, is the epitome of a spitfire. Her resounding belief that she doesn’t need anyone and can singlehandedly avenge her parents murders makes her quite flawed. She's also bad-tempered, wild-mouthed, and stubborn to such an extent that may make her unlikeable to readers. James Moone, the town's deputy with a dark past of his own, is Cassidy’s perfect opposite and sidekick. Not only does he keep her in check during their heated banter, but he is determined to protect her from the ghosts of his own past and the dangerous Jack Ransom, whether she likes it or not. James is much more likeable than Cassidy, and he ticks all the boxes of a strong, swoon-worthy fictional male character!

Despite the intense chemistry between Cassidy and James characters, their romantic relationship is very slow-burning. To be somewhat critical, there are some repetitive conversations where they express their feelings for each other and the dangers of pursuing them. By the time their steamy romance begins, there is a definite sense that it won’t last. On the positive, this is the perfect setup for their relationship further evolving in future books in the series. After some exciting conflicts, the book ends with many things unresolved and a new adventure beginning, perfectly paving the way for an exciting second book in this planned trilogy!

Overall, this book is an excellent read for those who enjoy Wild West adventures, steamy romance stories, and strong protagonists. The romance in this book gives off a high-stakes feel that is commonplace in contemporary romantasy novels, and it’s safe to say that this book could be enjoyed by a wider audience than your average western romance. If all of this sounds enriching, don’t hesitate to give this book a read or listen. The audiobook is so expertly and beautifully narrated by actress/audiobook narrator Lisa Roumain that it’s unquestionably the recommended format for enjoying this one!

NARRATOR PERFORMANCE

Narrator Lisa Roumain does an exceptional job narrating this audiobook. Her professional acting skills are on full display as she fully embodies Cassidy with a performance filled with dramatic outbursts, high emotion, and satire, perfectly suited to this unpredictable character.

Roumain also provides very distinct and authentic voices for the large cast of characters, giving the feel of a multicast production. In particular, her performance of Jack Ransom is so cunning and captivating that you may find yourself easily bewitched by this ruthless villain. Roumain’s narration is also well paced, with an increased tempo during the later dramatic confrontational and battle scenes.

Overall, Roumain's creates an engrossing listening experience reminiscent of an epic romantasy audiobook, as she delivers a good balance of suspense, humor, captivating dialogue, and heated romance. Consequently, you’ll likely be fully invested in the characters' outcomes and eager to listen to the sequel!

Thanks go to Kirsten Bohling and Lake Country Press for the ARC.

4.5 ⭐

Overall, this was a very fun read! Cassidy is a stubborn, no nonsense woman, bent on revenge. Moone is the good deputy with a shady past. Both are blind to their love of each other. And Ransom - I know I was meant to hate him, and for sure he is a villain, but I also want him to hold my hand and tell me I'm lovely 😆

It got a bit muddy for me towards the end, a lot of things happened very quickly, and it was a lot to process.

I look forward to more.

What the actual fuck, that was SO UNEXPECTED I'm still reeling from that ending. I don't even know if I can give a proper review at this point. I'll be thinking about this book for the rest of my life. The end.

(Thank you to Kirsten Bohling and Lake Country Press for the opportunity to read an ARC)

The Devil’s Backbone was a pleasure to read from start to finish—I read it on vacation, and it consumed me to the point where I would find myself thinking about Cassidy and Moone and what might come next, whenever I wasn’t reading about them.

I loved Cassidy from the moment we meet her, and she’s captivating in every scene. And she sure loves her books! Moone is a good boy deep down, but he’s got a hidden darkness and secrets he’s trying desperately to hide from Cassidy. And then add the extremely compelling villain, Jack Ransom, to the mix and things get complicated!

The pacing was perfect—it was fascinating to learn more about the characters’ backstories (and connections) as they unfolded in flashbacks, and the present day action was captivating. I had no clue how this was going to end, and I’m so excited to see where the story will go next!

I highly recommend this if you like historical romance, feisty and strong and secretly vulnerable heroines, complicated love stories—and let’s just say you’re in for a special treat if you happen to enjoy a certain enemies-to-lovers space opera couple.

Thank you so much to Kirsten Bohling for the ARC!
3.5 stars!
Out of all the books I've read this is the first where it was wild-west based! As a horse person, the author did a great job bringing the equestrian aspect of the book to life (why does this matter? Not a lot of authors get the horse-thing right, Kirsten did amazing!)

The story itself and the concept is SO GOOD. I was excited to see how it ended and a lot of the time I was left on the edge of my seat! The writing is really good and Kirsten paints a beautiful picture of Cassidy and Moone's world.

So why not 5 stars? There were times where it got a bit long winded. Moone's chapters in particular seemed to rehash the same inner monologue. I also struggled a bit with Cassidy, especially at the end. (spoilers!) She spent three weeks with Ransom wrapped around her finger and she never seized the opportunity to unalive him. She got caught up in the excitement and the life he could give her and waited too long. Then fast forward to the end, Moone takes the shot, saving her life, and she's pissed at him for taking HER revenge from HER. Like sis? You had WEEKS to do your thing and you didn't, now half the town is no longer alive but you choose to be petty and be angry at the man you love? I was so frustrated when she sent him away at the end, but luckily the epilogue seemed to be hopeful.

Overall, this was a fun read! It was different and exciting! Definitely recommend if you're looking for a romance that takes place in a different sort of world!

A must read if you like
👺 slow burn
👺revenge
👺historical settings
👺a woman who can handle her whiskey

The way I loved this book! I also sincerely apologize to my husband for having to deal with my western obsession while reading this book.

Kirsten has a way with story telling that just immediately envelops you. I didn’t want to put this book down ever. Cassidy and Moone have you rooting for them from the jump. The slow burn for me is peak when you are unsure if they will kiss or unalive each other. If you like westerns with women who talk back and dish it out, this is for you!

Thank you Kirsten and Lake Country Press for the ARC. I will be buying a copy for my trophy case aka bookshelf

When I heard Kirsten Bohling was writing a Western x historical romance (two of my favorite things), I did everything in my power to get my hands on an arc, so thank you to the author and LCP for giving me the opportunity to read THE DEVIL’S BACKBONE a few months early.

You guys. This book consumed me. Once I started reading, I literally could not put it down. There is so much to love about TDB. The pining? Off the charts. The villain? Sexy and kinda tragic. And did I mention James mf Moone? I love a man that simps for his lady AND still has a dark side... phew! The plot was original, and there were more than a handful of moments (and deaths KIRSTEN HOW DARE YOU) that made me want to throw my Kindle across the room.

This was truly a breath of fresh air in a publishing landscape that is unfortunately getting to be a lot of the same. Someone buy the movie rights for this asap.

4.5 Stars!

A child who witnessed the loss of everything she held dear.

A righteous vengeance to seek reckoning for those she loved.

Cassidy Callahan is a fierce, fiery, fearless bounty hunter who asks nothing from no one and lives her life with grit, passion and a near lifelong pursuit to deliver justice for the lives that were ripped away from her.

James Moone, the deputy of Gallow Gorge, is broken by the same man Cassidy hunts, and has a passion for Cassidy that rivals the passion of her vendetta. A good man with a secret he fears will put an end the dream of a life he wants so desperately to live.

Solo, Cassidy’s horse and “brother” is the one true constant in her life.

Together they embark on a mission to retrieve what’s theirs. Cassidy, retribution. James, to protect that which he loves. Solo, the ever present sable stallion.

The Devil’s Backbone by Kirsten Bohling is a descriptively written fusion of western and high society with passion, heartbreak and an edge of your seat conclusion that will leave you thirsting for more.

This review is based on an advanced copy of The Devil’s Backbone. Opinions are my own.

The Devil’s Backbone releases September 3, 2024.
