The gumshoe detective, complete with fedora and trench coat, just became a cold, dead corpse himself thanks to KJ Moore. Join one of the freshest voices in spec fiction in a noir thriller that would make Orson Welles blush.

Set in the world of fetish, bondage, s & m and consensual torture, Gabe is your average, every day human tragedy author. His sole purpose is to travel the world and write about the miserable existences that the 'unfortunates' on this planet need endure and the rubbernecking 'normal' world eats up every word. Gabe's self-loathing is all but perfect until his friend Ben dies in an apparent auto-asphyxiation accident, complete with gimp mask. Gabe believes Ben's death is murder and goes on an alcohol and nicotine-fueled undercover investigation through the sordid world of deviant sexuality to find the killer. What Gabe encounters, along with his trusted platonic life-mate Tilley, is beyond comprehension.

Never one to do things the easy way, even when the easy way is the right way, Gabe's journey takes him on a path of self discovery that can only be accomplished by wading into the most miserable filth this planet can offer... and coming out on the other side. What he finds, though, may just be the end of everything that keeps Gabe together at the seams.

Checked this book out because it was written by a graduate from a university from which I failed to graduate.

Certainly an eye opener!
Enjoyed this a great deal. The writer is brilliant. I felt like I was sitting cosily on her sofa as she told me the story and occasionally advised me to leave the room or cover my ears.

Shit got dirty. But I liked it. The POV was well done, considering a female wrote the male protagonist in the first person. Miss Moore knows her stuff, in more ways than one - a master of this subject material.

My applause is due; and I'll pull my jaw back up later.

I was sent a copy of Dolls by KJ Moore, courtesy of Blood Bound Books in exchange for an honest review. Although Dolls is a short novel, it is definitely for adults only- there is a lot of extreme content. The story is primarily told through the perspective of the protagonist, Gabe who is traveling with his friend Tilly in order to find out the mystery behind one of their friends who has “suffocated to death” during a sex act. They are determined to find out if the suffocation was an accident. Gabe is a journalist who is also recovering from the murder of his parents 5 months prior to the start of the narrative. Gabe frequently escapes with drugs and hallucinates and disassociates. I’ve noticed that he also has impulsivity about making decisions. There is a lot of awareness and information about the bdsm and kink community in this novel. One of the most important messages taking away from this book, sans spoilers is that with all of the extreme fetishes that exist today; the universal language is that they should all be consented. This was a short, but intense read. I enjoyed it and I rate a 4/5 stars.
