111 Places in New York That You Must Not Miss
New York, New York – a crazy quilt of evolving neighborhoods, trends, and tastes, and home to natives and newcomers of every nationality, ethnicity, and outlook. New York City’s history and grand ambitions live in every street, park, and hidden alleyway. This unusual guidebook invites the adventurous and curious to explore a wildly diverse selection of little-known places, including: a trapeze school, a giant Buddha in a former porno theater, a Coney Island sideshow, Louis Armstrong’s home, a Central Park croquet court, a Gatsby-era speakeasy, and a secret balcony where slaves worshipped 200 years ago. Play chess with the masters on a Midtown office-tower wall; have a pint at a legendary prizefighter's hangout in Soho; whisper messages across a crowded train station. Unexpected and quirky, most of these destinations are so under-the-radar they’ll astound even longtime New Yorkers who thought they knew it all!

Some interesting places in here with great historical backgrounds however I feel like I would only visit maybe around 5 or 6 of these places. It felt at times was really aimed at people that are more local rather than tourists, but its generally tourists that would buy this book.

Having been in this area for six years now, I was surprised to find there were a lot of hidden gems I didn't know. This is worth reading, even if you think you know NYC. Recent additions (opened anywhere from months to a year ago):
- Gulliver's Gate (largest interactive miniature museum)
- UES is an ice cream store front with a "storage" (hidden speakeasy in back, check their dress code before going)
I also love the Morgan Library and Museum. People may be familiar with Morgan's iconic library but it's so much more than that.

My parents’ gifted me this book a few years before the pandemic. I had skimmed through it but never read it cover-to-cover. This time, I read the entire book and looked up all the places mentioned to see if they were still open and what their hours were. Then, I would pencil in my edits.
There are a surprising amount of places in this book that are still open (though most hours have changed), and many of them I hadn’t heard of (I go to NYC often, so it was a pleasant surprise). I can’t way to check some of these places out this month!

I lived in NYC for almost two years. My husband was in grad school, and I treated the sojourn as a “live abroad experience“ I had never had. This book was wonderful. It got me into corners of the city I had never heard of, and the history and diversity and dynamic energy of the place revealed itself through the destinations. Some were a stretch, but most truly fascinating. I visited 101, and may knock off a few more. Highly recommend to those of curious mind and considerable time to invest.

The photos are okay, but most of the places -- at least as far as how they're described in the guidebook -- just didn't catch my eye. I bought this (along with another book) to plan an upcoming trip to NYC with my youngest daughter, and I only wrote down one or two places from the book. Normally I'd keep a book like this as a memento as well, but this one won't make it to my shelves.

Interesting book about some of the more unusual places to visit in NYC. Some of them are not that interesting, like the driving range and the paintball place but a lot of them are places worth a look. Includes pictures of them along with instructions on how to get to by subway or bus.

This book definitely fit the template for the 111 Places series with some interesting natural spaces, food spots, and oddities. I’m not sure how many of these I’d actually visit, but I appreciated the text and fantastic photography.

It was less impressive than the Boston book, but still it had fantastic recommendations that I couldn't resist saving on my travel list. New York is a magical city and it deserves the attention. I really want to visit at least 2 more times to fully enjoy the hidden joys I've found in this book.

Best for the repeat visitor to a city, this is a terrific series. I now have a new list of places to visit in NYC (not that the list ever runs out!)

it had my NYC secret (the Campbell Apartment) in it, so that got it some cred with me

Deceiving title, the author should have added "City", I was disappointed when I opened this book to find all the information is about New York City, not all of New York STATE.

If you love visiting NYC, get this book. If you live in NYC -get this book. Learning about interesting, unusual, little know places is always fun. I will be visiting several of these places on my next visit to NYC.

If you want to learn and see whatever you can about/in New York, this is the book for you. It's adventurous and informative and it gives you insight into special places most people don't even know about. It's wonderfully exciting. Check it out.

December 23, 2018I received this as a gift for my birthday just after I moved to NYC, so this was a fun read! I tagged all of the spots I’d like to go to, and it’s quite a few! The 1-page blurbs about each page were enjoyable to read.

Layout is attractive. Reader is provided with sufficient information to intrigue and perhaps prompt a visit to the places highlighted.

An interesting collection of non tourist places to visit. There is a broad selection across food, arts, music, history and outdoors. This book would make an excellent gift.
