They ambushed Task Force 24 as it left the jump point. Within minutes, three thousand Navy spacers were dead, and only five small ships remained.
Now, Brad finds himself the senior officer left alive in the Jalisco system, blockaded by a superior enemy force, with no way out and no way to call for help. With an enemy battlecruiser breathing down his neck and rebel troops on the planet killing civilians, he can't afford to just hide out in the system's far reaches. He must take the fight to the enemy and hope to save as many lives as he can.
A standalone short story in the universe of The Worst Ship in the Fleet and Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes, this story will have you rooting for Brad and his crew as they go up against impossible odds and show the galaxy why the Promethean Navy is the best in the Fringe. Space opera meets military science fiction with a touch of humor in this exciting tale of cunning and daring. Can be read and enjoyed with or without a reading of the rest of the series.
Skyler grew up in Southern California, under the best weather that state has to offer. So, he's shown a little of his insanity over the years in moving to colder, wetter places: New York City; Provo, Utah; Bainbridge Island, WA. He now resides with his family in Texas, which (apart from the humidity) gives him that great weather once again.
Skyler has been and continues to be a leader and executive with multiple Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, working across a variety of functions, both technical and non-technical. In other words, he's very much a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. Maybe that's why he has now decided to be an author as well. In it, he’s finally found the thing he loves to do most.
Mr. Ramirez currently resides in Texas with his wife, Lindsey, and their four children.
Good tale. Did not push idea that war is basically the same as mid-20th century except set in space.
Did not spoil things by totally ignoring relativistic effects of travelling significant fraction light speed. Nor did fusion spaceflight get an obvious treatment of "it's exactly the same as WWII diesel war vehicles (fuel volume, etc) because it's in interplanetary space using fusion". ...But only because it wasn't necessary plot point in this story segment.

Biggest irritation of series is author discussing technical issues to drive plot and being off by multiples of millions. Misses even simple comparisons like " yes grain of sand is less massive than modern depleted Uranium penetrator rod by factor of say 100,000 but grain of sand is moving nearly millions of times faster (0.3c) ...so why won't it penetrate the same armor again?" (PS non-relativistic energy delivered at point of collision increases as speed squared but otherwise only changes at the same rate as mass changes).
Spend $50 to get someone who took engineering physics course to give some answers or get free answers from online physics discussion forums (invest an hour of your time). Then stick to ballpark generalities in book discussions so people who are familiar with basics of topic are not face smacked with terribly wrong physics. Or use far speculative physics (no experiments done) or "invent" new physics (multidimensional, etc) that is only valid in universe of your book.
Another worthy addition to the six full novels and two other short stories written by this author that I have read in the pass two months . I don't usually read this amount from one author in a short period of time so it's an indication that I find his books very readable and interesting . Good story lines and good characters that you can bond with easily. I enjoyed it So should you

Brad and his ship are part of a squadron traveling to a planet 🌎. When they pass through a jump gate they are attacked and the fun begins. It ends happily after lots of action.
I would recommend this novella and author to 👍 readers of space opera adventure novels 👍🔰. 22024
If I were to rate this book compared to other books by skyler ramirez, I would say that this is one of my least favorite. But that is not to say that this is a bad book. It has a lot of ship to ship combat action and follows the Brad Mendoza storyline. All in all, it was a good book, and I do recommend it as a fast read
Too short though... And since I've read all the 7 published books in the " worst (insert your own word) in the galaxy " series and am just waiting for # 8 to arrive, I'll just keep reading until I finally find out why she became his X. :-)
This book is great at describing space battles as you read about the siege of jalisco. Mr. Ramirez does not disapoint. If you love strategy you'll love this book.
After most of his task force is destroyed, Brad finds himself in charge of mounting a response and saving the day. Nice trip back into Brad's past glories.
An exciting, fast-paced interlude of our main protagonist’s past exploits. Good to see him in action and developing into the dumb, lucky captain we love.
