I read about 20% of the ebook on Kindle Unlimited and used an audible credit the day the audiobook came out. I ended at page 179 of 281 and 59% of the audiobook.
I was so sad to DNF this. I barely scrapbooked my 2 other DNFs thus far this year. But I needed to for this one. It has so much promise! I needed to be shown, not told, the information about characters and places. The premise of fantasy magic with future sci-fi tech was exciting, but I became more and more disillusioned.
Character 2
I don't feel as though I know or understand any of the characters. I couldn't bring myself to care when a main character (?) had their arm lopped off.
Atmosphere 1
I didn't picture where we were at any point of time. Couldn't. Descriptions were info dumped and the large gaps in time jumps at the very beginning made me feel like I just walked into a movie theatre and half the movie has already played at a one-time showing.
Writing 2
With every chapter, information was thrown at me and I could not get immersed in the story.
Plot 3.5
This plot could be a blockbuster movie, drawn out better could have been two whole books.
Intrigue 1.5
Although the audio performance was amazeballs, this was the first time ever that I needed to slow the playback to under 1x speed. I also did not understand why a child who had a Scottish-esque accent, who then spent the entirety of her teen years in a future United States, was introduced with a slightly accented tone, suddenly had a thick, brogue again after getting her memories back.
Logic 2
Evil for the sake of Evil and Good for the sake of Good makes no sense to me. Morality, any personal conflict, was absent and not a factor to the story. It was assumed that good guys behave this one way, but no why and bad guys behave this other way, with no character growth amongst either group. They were just good because they were good and evil because they were evil. Characters did things for no discernible reason and broke out into unnecessary monologues as big bads advanced upon them from what seemed to be mere walking distances.
Enjoyment 1
I just didn't. Either this mash up isn't for me (although I did mention at the beginning of this that the premise was absolutely fascinating and I was looking forward to the mix of past and future like in Michael Crichton's Timeline) or this particular author's way of writing this isn't for me. In my defense, I also don't like Monty Python or most of Bruce Campbell's B movie work although I love Bruce himself.
Formula Says: 1.86 average, equaling a low 1.5, dropping the star rating to 1.
If various issues are addressed and a second edition is released, I intend to revisit it.
