Bondage // Available Now

#ad I received a gifted copy of this book - many thanks to the author @shane_joaquin_jimenez #partner

This published last week but I wasn’t able to post until today. I had meant to post before pub day, but here it is anyways.

This book grabs your attention from the start and doesn’t slow down throughout. You might need to take a Xanax or two before diving into this book. So buckle up, hold your hats, and all those good things because this book is one HECK of a ride.

Che’s sister has disappeared and Che has just broken out of prison to go and find her. In her quest to find her sister she will cross multiple states, meet some shady characters, and battle her own demons.

This is a fast-paced book with short chapters and lots of action. You’ll be on the edge of your seats reading it. The writing is a special gem all on its own. A hard one to put down.

Will def be reading more from this author because this book was simply amazing to read.

A decent neon-noir book with some interesting twists and turns. The plot is packed with action and the characters have depth to them. It was definitely a thrilling read although the end fell just a tad flat for me.

Still worth the read!!!

Bondage is a high-octane, impeccably written gem of a (debut!) noir/crime novel. A riveting, highly recommended read. Were there any justice, it would be on the shelves of every major bookstore. A supreme achievement from Shane Joaquin Jimenez!

This was a great fast-paced book. Che has escaped prison and is on a mission to find her sister. She goes through a lot, meets a lot of people, and doesn't give up. The story jumps straight into the action and explains the back story throughout.

I really enjoyed the storyline. Abit different from my usual thriller reads but definitely one I'd recommend!

Thanks to the author for sending me a out a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Great, no nonsense thriller with a hard as nails central protagonist, a la Sarah Connor. This has a noir, slightly dystopian feel. It’s full on action - the pace doesn’t let up for a second.

My only quibble is the title. I know what you’re thinking, but it’s not that type of book, let’s just leave it at that.

One of the best parts of being in the crime writing community is having the opportunity to read advanced reader copies of novels. I was fortunate to receive BONDAGE, by Shane Joaquin Jimenez, a sprawling revenge epic that reminds me of some combination of the movies Kill Bill, Terminator, and 8 mm.

Che Horowitz grew up with her mom, sister (Emma), and a man named Dave on a compound in the desert, isolated from society. Her mom taught her the government was evil, and neither Che nor Emma attended school. They’ve never been to a hospital, or a restaurant, or participated in any form of democracy. Instead, they learned survival skills, how to fight, and most notably, how to accept pain as a part of life, waiting for the (alleged) impending civil war.

The book is set in and around Las Vegas, and it opens after Che has escaped from prison. She’s on the run, searching for Emma, and without many options. In this way, Che is an amateur detective, searching for clues until she finds something disturbing that turns her into a vigilante hell-bent on payback. The writing is crisp and clean. For example:

"By the light of campfires like this, Dave once told them stories of doomed men from history, like the Apache warriors who once rode on horseback upon this very land. Faces painted with blood, the dripping scalps of white cavalrymen hanging from their saddles."

In many ways, BONDAGE is a literary crime novel with elements of horror and dystopia, Che existing in a world of conspiracy, doomsday prophecies, and a twisted (but possible) version of America. She takes beatings the likes of which I haven’t read or watched since the movie True Romance, where Alabama meets James Gandolfini’s character in a bloody bathroom battle.

Jimenez is a fresh voice on the crime writing scene, and BONDAGE is a great first novel. I look forward to reading more of his work.

You Burn Together.
You will not get that quote yet, but by the end of this book. It will be the most profound saying you can think of in terms of a family's bond. Che has been living in hell, taking the fall for one crime she didn't commit and a crime that was caused by automatic survival instinct. Well, in my opinion the girl was raised very much in the style of Dean Winchester.
You can't trust anyone but your family, especially when the government and law are on your heels. So imagine the one thing you have sacrificed your life for, the person you cared about so much. You did the time so they didn't have to?
Then you find out all that sacrifice was for nothing, because while you weren't there to protect them. They were dragged into their own form of hell.
That is basically what Che finds out when she breaks out of prison. Now she's on the move, an outlaw on the run and the only thing that matters is the mission.
While reading this in parts I could only go back to one monologue, that speaks to me in terms of Che’s resolve for her mother's cause as a revolutionary.
"I have a mission to win this war, to save the world. I have no time for vendettas. The mission is what matters.”
And yes that is a line from Season 7 of Buffy the vampire slayer. But Che as a character almost has a similar conviction and survival instinct to Buffy. Mixed in with the fighting style and vengeful lust of Beatrix Kiddo.
In all fairness this crime and violence story feels like it's set in an alternative line. Especially with the descriptions Shane uses to describe Vegas when Che does arrive in town. Giving it almost a post apocalypse viewpoint, it feels like a Dark noir Sin City esk style backdrop. Which is a perfect setup for all the intense action sequences and in depth fight scenes peppered throughout this book.
Che’s backstory also cements her consciousness for the cause and values instilled in her by her mother. Even though her mother is dead and gone, she still holds a great psychological power over her. Guiding her instincts as we read Che’s internal monologue in the voice of her own mother. The detail and visual descriptions written by the author are very important, as this gives a mental image of the story as it plays out. Which is quite impressive and a lot of the dialogue in this story, really does leave an impression on the reader. I know I had trouble stopping on just one chapter when I was so immensely engrossed in the pace and ferocity of this piece.

Bondage is the story of Che, a young woman who escapes from prison and goes on a blood-soaked mission through the Las Vegas underworld to find her sister, who has been taken prisoner by a twisted and sadistic celebrity.

I have a barometer where I judge a book to be great if I want to be back in the world of the book when I’m not reading the book, and Bondage is one of those books.

So let me start with the world.

Bondage brings together revolutionaries, conspiracy theorists, depraved celebrities, gangsters and gangsters who like to be dominated sexually (but who then kill the person who dominated them). It’s a heady mix but it works. And if, like me, you like to read about depraved and vile and twisted people, then it works its socks off.

But at the centre of this off the chain line up we have Che. She’s the heart of the story. She’s also the muscle and the fist and the blade. But her actions are propelled by a deep and relentless empathy. She has a massive heart. She’s our moral compass, and as she batters her way through an onslaught of nefariousness, she serves as a shining beam of light in the darkness.

Yes, there’s a lot of darkness in this book, but it’s not overpowering. It’s also necessary. This is the world Shane Jimenez is reflecting. This is the story he wants to tell, and it’s a story that needs telling. Because while the book asks a lot of important questions about power, and family, and revolution, and whether we are bound to our ideals or our blood, what it really said to me was that the most revolutionary thing we can do in dark times is show human warmth to strangers in need.

As a reading experience, the book is extremely cinematic. When I read, I want to see the scene in my head, and on an executional level, what Shane Jimenez does better than most is give us compelling and striking visuals. And he does this over and over. When Che is sitting in a car and she grabs an old man’s hair, jams a gun in his neck and reverses up, you see the dust kicked up by the wheels. When Che sits in the home cinema of a mansion and watches tapes of a person trapped in a box in a dungeon, you feel sick to your stomach (as you should).

These visuals, combined with propulsive action, all driven by a character with immense heart and guts, make Bondage a visceral and heightened rollercoaster of a book.

Thank you Shane for the gifted copy of Bondage!

When I was in my early 20s, my boyfriend and I spent Friday nights (or, Friday Highdays, as we called them) smoking and eating junk food while watching over the top violent action movies. From the very beginning, Bondage provides nonstop, high-stakes action, and it brought back fond memories of the very best Friday Highdays.

Brought up in the desert by a revolutionary (and paranoid) mother, Che was trained to fight and she’s, uh, pretty good at it, so she shows off her skills by being a total badass 100% of the time. While the situations she finds herself in might not be totally believable (but hi, hello, it’s fiction, and the crazy situations made the book super fun to read), I found Che herself to be a realistic and relatable character, torn between doing what she believes is right and what she was taught is right in the almost cult-like environment in which she was raised.

There was a (very true) message throughout the book about how women are often underestimated, and the idea that we can turn that around and use it as a weapon. I admit I took a few notes.

Of course, a thrilling book needs some twists, and in my opinion, the twists within Bondage were not super predictable. The very last one led to a great ending I definitely didn’t see coming, in which Che proved once and for all who she truly is. Whether it was for better or for worse, you’ll have to read yourself to find out.

I would not have agreed to read and review Bondage if I didn’t think I’d like it, but I ended up enjoying it even more than I thought I would, and I hope to read more from Jimenez in the future!

This was a tough read not only in general flow of the book as it ebbed and flowed in the story line but in the abuse the young girl as she went looking for her younger sister. The book delves into the background and upbringing of the sisters as a survivalist/ anti government mother made her girls hard. There was no real love in the home other than the love of hate. It starts with Che the older daughter escaping from prison and her trying to find her younger sister. There are many places she goes and escapes by the proverbial skin of her teeth and later not even by that much. Unfortunately, it’s a story that could be true as there are plenty pf places in the great west where bodies can be buried after the body has been used up. Che does eventually find her sister but realizes she is not the sister she protected many years ago. The life she is “living” is a very hard one where she has been abused for some time. And has grown cold and dead inside. The ending is a bit unexpected and somewhat flat but it is a book that churns your stomach and if any abusive situations are triggers do not read this book.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this incredible noir thriller 🫶

First off, and in my view there is no bigger compliment, this gave me S.A.Cosby vibes!

Che Horowitz escapes from prison with one purpose in mind. All she wants is to locate her missing sister Emma. Soon she finds herself fighting for survival and revenge, mixed up in a criminal underworld of corrupt police officers, mobsters and violence.

The author skillfully creates a cast of flawed yet realistic characters. Our main character Che isn't morally clear cut but her backstory and her desperate fight to find her sister had me rooting for her regardless. And damn, does she have a powerful and rewarding revenge arc.

This is grimy, gritty, and brutal. A fast paced, action packed thrill ride which manages to keep you constantly guessing the entire time. The pages overflow with menacing atmosphere, constantly assulting your senses with scenes of stark violence and harsh cruelty. Yet it manages to remain heartfelt at its core.

From the relentless brutality to the bleak but hopeful ending, I loved every minute of this unexpectedly emotional novel. Che will stay with me for a long time.

Bondage is a neon noir crime thriller written by Shane Joaquin Jimenez. Che Horowitz escapes from prison to find her missing sister. That simple sentence is extremely deceiving because this book, this story, is SO much more. The seedy underbelly of Las Vegas is the backdrop for non-stop, strap yourself in, hold onto your knickers action, that had me breathless a number of times. Che is a heroine for the ages. This is modern noir at its very best. And while modern, I could still hear that black and white movie narrator in the background, and the P.I. wore the suit all the best ones donned. Violent, disturbing, horrific, and surprisingly, some pretty powerful heart. Che's flashbacks of her isolated upbringing sets the stage for the perfect redemption.. And the ending...the ending is stunning. Beautiful. This is the most exciting book I've read in ages. And it's a debut novel!! Damn. You all want this. You do. VERY highly recommended.

Best thriller I’ve read in years...

Specifically, the best since Michael Mann’s novel Heat 2 – whose co-author (Meg Gardiner) is a fellow fan of Shane Joaquin Jimenez. The greasy underworld of Vegas and the desert nowheres of Nevada depicted in Bondage are so vividly (and brutally) realized, it’s no surprise Jimenez is a native son of both. Beneath the fine black soot of this page-turning noir, you’ll find a warm – bloody yes, but warm – beating heart pulsing with poignancy about family, loss, and sacrifice.

Without giving anything away, the overland journey Che Horowitz embarks upon in search of her sister (pocked with harrowing twists, snags, and revelations) is relentless and engrossing. It’s her inner journey, though – her unforeseeable transformation – that sticks with you the most. The final lines still give me goosebumps.

First of all, I don't remember if there were any in the book's forward or whatever, but I do have to say there are some major triggers in this book. Personally, I absolutely loved this book. And I can't believe it ends the way it does. I feel like there could be more for Che. So much more. Especially with how the ending is. She did some things that needed to be done and it should be a reward for her lol. Just sayin. I'm still just absolutely blown away by this though. Blown away. This will leave you on the edge of your seat.

I received a copy of this book from Voracious Readers Only. It’s a crime thriller that’s full of unexpected twists and surprises. Che Guevara Horowitz and her sister Emma were raised in a survivalist compound. Che ends up in jail for a murder she did not commit, along with the murder of a police officer who snuck up behind her. While in jail, she receives a letter about her sister, after having no communication from the outside world since she was incarcerated. She’s convinced that Emma is in serious trouble, so Che escapes from prison to go to her aid. However, things aren’t really as they seem. Even though she is a murderer, Che has pretty decent moral values. Fantastic read.

Straight forward, no nonsense pulp noir. It puts the protagonist through hell to the point where it hurts the reader. Nevertheless it delivers a satisfying tale of abuse, broken family and vengeance. Hopefully there'll be more from Jimenez in the near future. A young woman who was raised by an anti-government militia breaks out of prison to find her sister. This leads her down a sinister rabbit hole of snuff filmmaking, neo-nazis and a perverse and corrupted former child actor. And that's just the beginning of the hellish journey she takes to set things right.
Quite incendiary.
If you enjoyed this book, the novel Perras Malas by yours truly comes highly recommended.

Wow! This book is not for the faint of heart. It races through violent and scary scenarios involving torture and murder without pause. The protagonist Che Horowitz is a troubled woman who was raised to be a domestic terrorist. She breaks out of prison and goes on a mission to rescue her sister who may or may not be alive.

The book is hard to put down but I put it down a few times to take a break from the tension. It is very well written and decently proofread.

Good action packed story. It starts with a crazy stolen truck and keeps barreling to the end.

Che escapes from prison after killing a police officer. She wants to reunite with her sister, Emma after years apart. She heads to Las Vegas and runs into mobsters, a bad cop, a PI who helps her and is reunited with Emma. But it isn't what it looks like. The sisters end up where they started from in the Nevada desert, but how it ends is the question.

The book is entertaining with nice plot twists and turns.

Bondage is a time piece that needs to be read by all thriller lovers. There is absolute no time to catch your breath or pick out scenarios. The book is fast paced and heart thumping. As a reader, my heart kept on beating page by page and there was no time to relax. I kept on following Che wherever she went and really hoped for the next thing to happen. This book is deliciously amazing and a beautiful work of art that needs to be in a private shelf.

A masterfully violent, rip-roaring assault on the senses from page one that doesn’t relent until the final line. There’s no time to catch your breath, so you might as well inhale deeply and hold on tight, because Jimenez pulls you into his perilous Las Vegas and won’t unshackle you until he says so. Bondage’s power lies not in the vast carnage but in the deepness of the human heart, which it strips bare.

This is what I've been looking for. Baer, Clevenger, early Palahniuk -- this fits right in adding a new, unique voice without cheap imitation. An antihero's dark noir quest to overcome her past and save someone that's more lost than she knows….

Good stuff all around. I can't wait to read more by Jimenez.

Loved it! Che is good old fashioned hero who fights not only to survive but also to protect. She’s got grit! The story is fresh on a background of the comforting noir and dime thrillers of the forties to sixties era. The writing is bold, well paced and tight.
