Rayna is getting closer to 40 and after being unlucky in love she decides to copy one of her favorite fantasy romance books and say a spell to summon a demon boyfriend.

Who raised her? She acted like a horny college student rather than a grown woman who ran multiple successful businesses. The author's sense of comedy also didn't work for me. It just came across as way too try hard. I did not find it funny that this woman was constantly throwing up on people. The way she body shamed past dates for being fat and sloppy and having child birthing hips was unnecessary.

The worldbuilding had potential in some sections but so much of this book was repetitive and I still left feeling like I knew nothing. Much of the dialogue was cringey and all the actually bonding outside of the bedroom happened off page. The sex scenes were good but that was just not enough to carry this book for so many pages when they spent a lot of time outside of the bedroom in a plot that was meandering.

A fun and spicy read that doesn't take itself too seriously but doesn't forget to portray the (bitter) reality of dating over 30, especially as a Black woman who doesn't take shit - Rayna is a sassy goddess 😏

Metice is the kind of demon I would try to summon at any cost ❤️‍🔥

Likosa 💅🏻

I would have liked a little less alcohol - especially at the beginning.

Thank you for trusting me with an eArc, Jessica 🖤

Hilarious Monster Romance

😈 Bookish Thoughts
Hot damn I laughed so hard while reading this book! I went in expecting a silly romcom monster romance, but I was not expecting actual worldbuilding and a full magic system?? Pleasantly surprised!

I did immersive reading for this one and highly recommend it! The narrator was amazing and only added to how funny this book was!

💜 What to Expect
• Demon boyfriend
• Dating horror
• Monster romcom
• Magic system
• Found family

I ended up DNF’ing this one. The FMC was hard to like. I should have known I was going to exit when I popped over here at around 18% to see if it was just me. Someone said the FMC was “immature and unserious” and it was SPOT ON. Nevertheless, I kept going. The world building was a little clunky - is he a demon or an alien? Surprise! She’s had a psychotic break before! I could tell they were setting up for something else for later…but every time I stopped reading to do real-life stuff, I wondered to myself “why are you reading this?”

4.5 Stars!

Listen, I love Jessica and if I wasn't already a fan of her writing then this book would have made me one. I had so much fun reading this book! I have been waiting on this since she released the sneak peaks on Tik Tok.

Rayna has it all! She has a good job, house and her art. The one thing she doesn't have is a consistent man. One night after a failed date that left booty juice on her car seats, she gets drunk. She remembers a spell in a fantasy book she recently read and decides that it wouldn't hurt to try it. She does the spell and then goes to take a shower. When she get's out there is a whole demon standing in the room. The spell actually worked. You will follow Rayna and Metice as they worked to break their bond and go back to their lives. However, it seems like destiny is fighting against them at every turn.

I laughed throughout this whole book. My only issue is that I wish she touched more of Rayna's ancestors. Event with that, this book will definitely go down as a favorite for this month and one of my favorite monster romances! I will always be a fan of Jessica's writing!

Single 30-year-old Reyna is tired of the regular dating scene. One night she drunkenly casts a spell from a book summoning herself a boyfriend only to get more than she bargained for by receiving a demon instead.

This book is not for me. The “funny” moments come across as cringe. The heroine is immature & unserious.

A mistake turned into perhaps redemption. This started off a little rocky with fat shaming a bad date (it felt unnecessary) but turned the corner when demon bae was summoned. Casual sex, to random pop ins, to maybe you might be my mate but I have an ex who won't let go. The last half was let's get ready to fight maybe a little gory but we got a HEA. Again the crazy ex not my favorite but why was the Devil chill. It was fun read didn't love all the parts but can ignore it to round up to a 4 star

This was so chaotic and so funny. Rayna is my spirit animal 😭😭 There was so much going on in here and what really pulled me in was there first chapter called ‘Booty Juice’🤣🤣 I loved the banter and spice was really good and hilarious at the same time. I liked how sassy Metice was, definitely was not expecting that from a demon.

Will be checking out more books by this author.

This beginning is nonsense. I get that author is trying to set the stage but I just don't believe it or want to hear about.

The idea that someone would be so filthy that stuff would fall out of their butt crack in the car is both disgusting and unlikely. Also, that the woman would be driving the guy she obviously doesn't know or like for their first date is super unlikely.

If this book doesn't grab you from the 1st chapter its Not for you! It's funny, erotic, romantic, & loyal. Rayna and Metice might not be in the firey pits of Hell that we have heard of, but they most definitly make enough fire to create one. There is splitting tongues, rotating members, and twirling horns (OH my)! I have sore thighs from clinching so much. Rayna has a friend Keri who is down for all the BS( after she realizes it is real) until she is injured. There is so much action, gooey unaliving, Demons, witches, puppies, psychics, & humans!! This book kept me on the edge of my seat. Especially toward the ending my nerves were tensed trying to make it to the last page.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The only thing I liked about this book were the sex scenes, and that's saying a lot bc I usually don't care about them at all. BUT they were the only thing that was written well imo.

A Demon with a rotating dick. 😏That also knows how to two strand twist and doesn't forget the bonnet after. A pet that poops rainbows. Spells that involve a woman making you orgasm. Was that enought o draw you in??? I hope so! lol This book was SO good. From page one to the last. I laughed so much reading this. Metice my new book boyfriend was my favorite character. He did NOT play when it came to Ray.

Rayna thought it would be cute to recite a spell from a book. In her defense, why would she think it was real?!?! lol! The rest was history from there. The world building in HELL made me want to question the author if she might know something we don't.👀 'Cause sis, it was a bit too detailed! As a GOD fearing woman. Even I was intrigued! 😅

I adored her friendship with her bff Keri. And Keri was for sure that ride or die bestie. They would do anything for one another. (as it should be). I was sad when the story ended. But, I was pleased with their happy ending.❤️

DNF 17%

First strike: I cannot stand when a character see's something unbelievable and just assumes it's all a dream. You can do that for about two and a half minutes then I need you to snap out of it. You absolutely cannot have a night of wild sex with a horned demon, who has a rotating eggplant, and think it's all a dream. I can suspend belief that a demon can be summoned from a fantasy novel spell and a bath and body works candle, but I draw the line at willful delusions.

Strike 2: Her friends are shitty.

Strike 3: FMC summons a demon, then gets attacked by another demon and decides it might be safer to stay home. Great plan! Then she gets BORED a few hours later and just HAS to get out of the house. This woman is supposed to be in her mid-thirties and her actions are so bizarre to me I can't connect.

DNF @ 20%. The main character is wayyy too immature for a 30 year old, the writing is corny, the pacing is slow. I’m just not interested in continuing this.

This was SO FUNNY. Rayna is a whole mood.

Who among us hasn’t been so fed up with dating that we’ve considered summoning a demon to date as a better option?

Hint: It’s definitely the better option.

Aggressively single woman accidentally summons a demon, gets caught up in shenanigans in actual hell and other dimensional planes. This book is silly, outrageous, unhinged, but also undeniably fun. Don't take this book too seriously (it certainly doesn't!) and you'll have a good time reading this.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 🌶🌶🌶/5

TW - alcohol consumption, gore, violence, body shaming of a sc, kidnapping, mental break (derealisation, past, mentioned), slavery (mentioned briefly in passing), stalking, gun violence, driving under the influence, car accident, sexual assault (sc to FMC)

CW - consent while intoxicated, DP, food play, spanking, ow drama

Tropes - paranormal, jealousy

Representation -Black FMC, asthmatic FMC, mental health, mid/plus-size FMC, FF scene

So

This was okay, it was interesting enough for me to follow the story and finish the book but I have nothing else to say about the story itself other than: it was okay. The characters and pacing though? 😬

Honestly, when I saw the cover and the title, I was like oooooo a demon novella, sign me up. Wrong. This is a 302 page book and, imo, I think should have been a novella. Whilst I read the whole thing fine, this would have likely hit harder if it was half the length and didn't drag in the way that it did at time. Most of their intimacy outside of sex and getting to know each other happened off page and was only mentioned to us which I found weird.

Rayna (FMC) fucks around and finds out when she performs a spell from one of her fantasy books and it actually works. She feels lonely because she's the last single person in her friendship group. Despite finding out, Rayna is reluctant to accept the consequences of her own actions. Metice (MMC), informs her that this is literally her fault and he's right! He also tells her she needs new friends and, again, he is right!

Rayna needs to be aged ALL THE WAY DOWN. I quite literally could not fathom for a single second of this book that this woman is pushing 40 because smite me where I stand if I act like her at that age. Rayna references her age and idk why because she acts like a child. She apparently runs multiple businesses and is very successful but apart from some material things, there is no supporting evidence of that being the case and she does not go to work once during this book, lol.

One of my biggest bookish pet peeves is when a character is told to (not) do something to avoid causing harm and guess what they do? Ignore it. Why? Vibes, apparently. Imagine not listening and KNOWING it's to your own detriment as someone pushing 40. Imagine. Is that not fucking embarrassing????? I was not following how she was conscious of making stupid decisions and doing them anyway. Constantly.

To top it off, the resolution to the big bad they were fighting was so.... lack lustre to the point I couldn't believe I read all of that for someone to go, "get over yourself".

Scale:
⭐️ - would've DNF'ed / continued out of spite
⭐️⭐️ - shit, but whatever
⭐️⭐️⭐️ - meh, could've been better
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - lit 👅
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - loved it, inject this shit into my veins 🤪

🫑 - no smut
🌶 - no point
🌶🌶 - mediocre at best
🌶🌶🌶 - standard smut, hot
🌶🌶🌶🌶 - 🥵 okay, some CW
🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 - fuck me 🥵🥵 CWs / filthy with a side of filth - see Poison / Room Twenty-Two: Hide and Seek/ The Naughty List

Dnf at 108 pages.

2 stars because I think this book is at least readable, I just don't have the patience to play with a flip flopping mc. I think the curse of 1st person narration is that you can get very lost on it and forget who this character is, they become wobbly and more an idea than a person, you could through them anything and make them anything. Rayna was not a character that had any clear lines, she was whatever the author wanted her to be in that moment, and the same with her past.

what annoys me is that there's ways to naturally hide something from the reader while being in the mcs pov, there's things the brain doesn't want to think about unless directly confronted. Pulling the past out of your ass suddenly is odd and I didn't like it. Also, mentioning phychosis and having the MC's past phychosis at the very least hinted (I am unsure if it's confirmed bc I refuse to read this anymore) to be all true and actually had happened feels harmful. Also, there was what came across to me at least as fatphobia in the beginning, and so far Rayna and her love interest have had sex twice and both times Rayna was heavily under the influence, idk....this book just feels icky to me. Shame because the art is lovely.

I just think Jessica Cage needs a new editor, and better beta and sensitivity readers. The writing style is readable, but with so many plot errors and insensitive subjects this book is a flop.

This book was a wild ride! Rayna was a FMC who didn’t take her situation lying down and the method she used to summon a demon was funny. Metice was very much a loner with few friends left in his world and abysmal communication skill. They both held each other accountable, which was what made their relationship good. For all its laugh out loud moments, the book dealt with some dark themes. There was very little time there wasn’t some danger to the MCs.
For the most part, I thought the book was well done. There were a couple of plot point decisions that seemed odd, though

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: violence, gore, gun violence, stalking, abduction, imprisonment, forced voyeurism, dubcon (FMC thinks she’s dreaming), sex while intoxicated, mention of psychiatric hospitalization, car crash

I loved this way more than I expected new favorite AA author! Bonus points that she also writes sci-fi 🥰😍
Rayna is fed up with bad dates and decides to summon a demon boyfriend only to accidentally call a real demon, Matese, who becomes soul-tied to her. The summoning is inside a romance novel. What she thinks is a wild fever dream quickly turns into her new reality. As her art career takes off and demons and possible powers enter her life, everything spirals fast, leaving Rayna overwhelmed and fighting to survive. This book was insane in all the best ways and I devoured it whole.
