Book 3 in the Special Agent Katz series and I am already hanging out for the next.
The storylines in this one were engaging and suspenseful, heavily focussed on serial killers, their style and triggers. I was fascinated. I am not sure of the odds of so many serial killers being in one region, but I guess it can happen? There is an element of suspend disbelief required, but it didn't ruin the story for me at all. I was still holding my breath at times these things were happening (haha).
I am really enjoying the development of both characters Katz and Styles. We learn more about their own childhood and history, and there are wonderful scenes of them bonding and their recent connection.
I'm hanging out for the next one, not because of a cliff hanger, but because I think someone has figured out Beth's identity!! I also feel like maybe she's just self diagnosed psychopathy, and there's doubts as to how true and correct that actually is by her.
I highly recommend this series, especially if you are fascinated by serial killers and the psychology of it all.

By now, this being the the third book in the Beth Katz series, I know what to expect. Solid and interesting characters in Beth Katz and her FBI colleague Dax Styles, lot of crime with a serial killer on the prowl (but without getting graphic) and reasonable procedures.
There are a spate of convenience store robberies and murders in three communities. Many customers and store employees are dead. In each case one woman is kidnapped, to be later discovered dead in the woods after facing abuse. The FBI director asks Dax Styles to investigate these cases. There is no evidence left at the crime scenes. Beth Katz understands serial killers better than most and builds a profile & list of suspects. She uses technology to narrow down the list based on their sightings & movements. The problem remains though that there is no evidence and their best hope is if the killer slips up in conversations or is caught during a next act. There is also a serial killer in the nearby Mischief town where a few women have been murdered. Beth is of the view that they need to see if these crimes are related.
This book builds on what Beth went through growing up after her father murdered her mother, and later being in foster care. There is a new revelation regarding Dax Styles’ sister who went missing in childhood, and I suspect the following books will build on this. The story moves very fast, and is very easy to read. The crimes are horrendous, though the descriptions are not too graphic and should not be a problem for most readers. The strength of the series is the characters of Beth and Dax – their distinct styles, courage and conviction.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

D. K. Hood exemplifies her abilities with this thriller collection. Hood creates a stunning story that is sure to keep the reader fixated on learning how things develop while relaxing throughout the experience. FBI Special Agent Beth Katz has kept her secret from everyone as she keeps hunting for serial killers across Montana. While Special Agent Katz has been working to find a local serial killer another case crosses her desk, as a number of women have gone missing during violent robberies. While Special Agent Katz looks for answers, she realises that the pressure of the job has left her vulnerable, perhaps too much so, and her secret might soon come to the surface. Hood delves deeper into her newest protagonist to present a great novel.
Cassidy Wilder is frantically looking for cover, knowing that every second counts. While the woods is a reasonable place to hide, the man who has abducted her is hot on her heels and before long, he will find her and exact a punishment even she could not fathom.
A convenience store robbery leads to a number of people dead and Cassidy Wilder abducted from the scene. FBI Special Agent Beth Katz would not normally take the case, pressure is being put on the Field Office in rural Montana to help solve the case. Spanning a number of counties, the law enforcement officials have not been working well together, forcing Special Agent Katz and her partner, Dax Styles, to corral the sheriffs together to get answers. While visiting the Wilder household, a few blocks from the crime scene, Special Agent Katz feels for the family and vows that she will do all she can to ensure that Cassidy returns home safely.
Looking through all the evidence on hand, Special Agent Katz is horrified when she watches the CCTV footage. The killer is calm as he shoots people around the store, as though this is all a game to him. Cassidy appears horrified violently taken from the store and shoved into the back of a truck. Comparing the other cases to this latest one, the parallels are eerie. Each of the other women who were abducted from the scene have turned up dead, their underwear missing, as though this is some odd trophy. Special Agent Katz realises that there is a time limit before Cassidy will also be killed and discarded.
A shocking discovery turns the case on its head and Special Agent Katz worries there is more to come. It is only when one of the bodies of the discovered women has a name written in blood that the case opens up. A strong lead has Special Agent Katz and Styles questioning themselves and just how much they know about the case, as well as one another. All they can decipher is that there is a killer out there, in plain sight, with more attacks surely on the horizon. They must stop this killer before the body count rises exponentially. Hood grips the reader with her storytelling and kept me wondering until the final page.
D.K. Hood has done a fabulous job with this series, painting a dark and powerful scene for the reader to enjoy. While the narrative flows well, there are strong undertones of the darker side that is Special Agent Beth Katz. As the story gets more intense, Katz and those around her find themselves caught in a web, questioning everything that is taking place. With a momentum build in the narrative, the reader finds themselves affixed to the story and all its facets. The character development is great, allowing the reader to learn a little more about those who are part of this collection, while also getting a crossover feel from others who work in Black Rock Falls, home to Hood’s other series that is just as captivating. I am eager to see where Beth Katz and those around her will go and what backstory will emerge that will explain more of her darker aspects.
Plot twists are present in all of these novels, this one especially. The series is gaining traction and Hood is adding more to her stories to help shape them for the curious reader. Twists emerge that no one could have seen coming, which adds depth and intensity to the stories, all while keeping the reader wondering what is to come. I await the next novel in the series and how D.K Hood will present it for series fans.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for another great book that checked all the boxes.

Third book in the Special agent Beth Katz series, I love following her and her FBI partner. I may have loved the first 2 books a little more than this one, but it was still an amazing read !

Dark Hearts is book 3 in the Agent Beth Katz series by D.K. Hood. It's a fantastic book that has your heart in your throat on many occasions as Agent Katz gets into too many close calls. Katz and Styles, her partner, are called to the scene of a convenience store robbery where everyone in the store was killed. The killer took a young woman as a hostage with him and drove off. He even killed a man outside the store who was walking his dog so as not to leave any witnesses. The girl that was taken is Cassidy Wilder, 16, and her parents are frantic to get her back safely.
As Katz investigates she finds a string of similar convenience store robberies in which everyone was killed and a young woman was taken as a hostage. The robberies happen during the day and the hostage is found dead the next day. That means that time is of the essence or Katz and Styles will find the girl dead. Cassidy's body is found near a highway by a forest. As more robberies keep happening and more girls are taken, Katz and Styles must find the killer before more lives are lost. The killer doesn't hesitate or seem to mind killing everyone in the store. Who could be doing this? Why does no one notice him?
When Katz puts herself in harms way to try to get revenge on another killer, will she succeed? Will Katz be caught by Styles? This book will keep your heart racing as the suspense gets to be too much at times. Dark Hearts is another fantastic book in this series. Within the first chapter I instantly remembered my complaints from the first two books in this series but I’ll begin with a positive: the murders kept my interest.
Complaints: the main characters are constantly getting/making/ordering a cup of coffee. If the setting changes, cup of coffee. I think I counted four times in one chapter that they got/made/ordered coffee.
No profanity. MMC says things like “darn it” and “darn right”.
Another character says “y’all” in odd ways that doesn’t sound authentic. This is set in northwest USA but is it common to refer to a school cafeteria as the school canteen?

On dirait que je ne peux pas expliquer pourquoi j’ai moins embarqué dans ce tome que dans les autres. Peut-être que j’aurais dû attendre un petit moment avant de lire le tome trois, parce qu’il y a certaines redites sur les personnages qui reviennent et ça m’a agacée (je pense qu’on a compris que l’auteure a lu un livre sur les psychopathes). Mais sinon l’histoire d’enquête était quand même intéressante.

Yet, there is one individual on the team Beth tries to avoid: FBI Agent Joe Wells, the bureau's leading profiler of serial killers.
I'm truly enjoying this series. The dynamics between Beth and Stiles bring a mix of light-heartedness and emotional depth to the story. I appreciate how she can lower her defenses around Stiles. However, I'm concerned that in doing so, she might accidentally expose her secret. The developing bond between Stiles and Beth is captivating. One can't help but ponder the consequences if Beth's secret were to come to light, and the subsequent effect it might have on her relationship with Stiles.

FBI Special Agent Beth Katz and her alter ego, the 'Tarot Killer' return. Along with her colleague Dax Styles. For another intriguing, twisty and gripping crime thriller.
That sees Beth and Dax ordered by the director of the FBI to catch the Convenience Store Killer. Who has been going from town to town holding up convenience stores, killing everyone in sight and abducting and subsequently killing a young girl.

And with big twists and turns. This was another cracking instalment in the series, and I'm really enjoying the development of both Beth and Dax as characters, and I'm intrigued to see if someone really has worked out Beth's killer secret and if so, what that'll mean going forward.
I would happily recommend Dark Hearts to all.

What a way to end that book!! I really don’t know how much longer Beth can keep being Beth! I worry for Styles!!
I love the cameos in this and I loved how this linked to the recent Detective Kane and Alton series. I really love how they all link and I think, personally a series for Jo and Carter would top this off. I do feel for Wolf though, he must be so tired as he is flitting between all the counties!!!!
I just love how different this series feels and is. With Beth’s secret, her job, Styles and his baggage and how dark Ms Hood goes! These murders are not for the faint-hearted!
I also love that there always seem to be two stories running alongside each other. and Beth always has an agenda. We see the main story and then we see Beth. Boy was my heart in my throat at the end! The scene in the hotel eek!
I can’t wait to read Forgotten Girls as it is going to be a personal case for one of our beloved characters. Yes beloved, because seriously I do love Beth and Dax! She is fragile and badass at the same time!

I become giddy when I get to read a new Hood book! I marvel at how the author can keep the stories fresh and appealing with each new book. Hood has a tremendous knack for writing crime fiction and I’m just one of the happy recipient readers of her talent.
I love how the layers of Beth continues to be revealed. I love how she transforms herself to become the Tarot Killer. I love her dueling sides: revenge and respect for the law. The woman is multitalented.
I did suck in my breath during several scenes Beth came within a hair’s breadth of getting caught and just Bearly (clue) escalated detection.
I also love the cameo appearances of Wolfe, Jo, Kane (swoon), and Jenna.
Hood also reveals a bit more about Styles’ background which I can’t wait to learn more about.

Another wonderful installment in the Beth Katz series. The plot is good, the twists it takes are wonderful. Just about the time you think you know where the story is going, another twist! I loved it. I cannot wait for the next book

Time is against Katz and Styx when a robbery leads to multiple deaths and an abduction, but when this robbery is like others, they realise time is running out when the abducted victim is usually found dead the next day.
Soon there are more bodies, but there is also more than one killer, and it won’t be long before Katz thinks about taking matters into her own hands.
This novel had me reading well into the night, my heart was racing at certain scenes I couldn’t put this novel down. Beth Katz is back and does not disappoint. Hood writes us characters that all have depth, and we find out more about our character Beth Katz, which makes us want to know even more.
I love this author’s writing, it’s easy to read and follow, and constantly engaging and I know it will be a great read as soon as I pick it up.
This is a fantastic addition to this series.

Enjoyable
I enjoy many of these books. She writes well and focuses on the primary character with precision. However, she falls like most on a pet pev I have: Jail vs. Prison. Jail is anything 2 years and under. Prison is anything over 2 years. The two are not interchangeable.
Outside of that, I hope Hood continues with Dex and Beth.

Another brilliant crime thriller from DK Hood.
I love this series especially as Beth has two sides to her.
Beth and Styles are called when several people are shot in a local store and a teenage girl abducted.
This killer is on a spree and they know they will find the girl’s body the next day.
There’s also another killer in a nearby town and Beth has him in her sights as The Tarot card killer.
I really like the relationship Beth and Styles have and wonder how long it will be before she shows him who she really is.
This is a great crime thriller and I’d highly recommend this series.

The third book in what I think will be a shorter series than the Black Rock books and it’s not that they aren’t as good,, Beth is an interesting character but the longer she spends working with Styles is going to be her downfall as eventually she will be caught and that’s one book that is going to be well worth waiting for. As usual the author has written a story that keeps the reader guessing.

katz is that person an fbi agent and a psychopath and now katz and her partner are after a killer, one that strikes in a local store and murders everyone and then takes a hostage who is found the very next day assaulted and very dead
katz will need all her spider senses with this one as she works closely with her partner and with a few surprise guests turning up jenna, dave and wolf....
its always a good day when you have a dk hood book to read and you find one of your mates is in the book as well making an appearance as a store owner... whoop whoop

The third installment of The Special Agent Beth Katz series and it's still going strong for me. I really enjoyed this book and am growing to really like some of the characters outside of Beth and Styles. I liked the cat and mouse of Beth's other sides persona. My only complaint is I want more! I can't wait for number 4.

Number 3 in the series and another brilliant read. We get to know Beth a lot more in this instalment and as she gets closer to Styles you can almost feel she’d like to reveal her ‘other ‘self, almost!
Two enthralling main plots, the Convenience Store Killer and the Night Creeper case. One case will be solved conventionally and the other taken care of by Beth’s alter ego, the Tarot Killer. Some excellent scenes in the both plots keep you gripped. There is a white knuckle ride, literally, to the conclusion to one of the plots and your heart is in your mouth as Styles almost catches the Tarot Killer In the other.
I absolutely love the crossovers with the characters from the Kane and Alton and oh the wonderful tension when Beth bumps into Jenna.
Our favourite vigilante lives to kill another day and I’m so looking forward to witnessing it in book four

Fast paced thriller. Book 3 and I highly recommend you read book 1 and 2 first. There are two crimes they are tracking. Both are horrendous. I love that we get to see the thought process on both the FBI agents and the Tarot Killer. (Yes I know one and the same) We learn more of Beths history, her abuse in foster homes, her memories and lack thereof. We also see the working relationship and friendship between Styles and and Beth. Bear, our 4 legged reacts to Beth at various times that could call attention to her dark deeds of vigilante justice. There were several occasions where Beth almost got caught in her need to take justice and in her need to redivirt some of the thought direction on the Tarot Killer.It is always a win seeing Wolfe and others. In this book we also see Alton and Kane. The vigilante justice is a moral issue for many and always has me holding back. Additionally with Alton, Kane, Wolfe, Jo and all being so smart I just cannot see her fooling them long term. That always stays in the back of my head. That being said, my personal issues should not affect my review. That is not fair to the book, For that reason this book is a 5. A page turning thriller that has you holding your breath. Beth Katz rocks! Have you ever known another Special Agent with such a murky past and a sideline doing exactly what she puts people away for? The Tarot Killer is back in a banging inclusion to the series.
With a convenience store killer seeming to be targeting young girls, it's Katz and Dax who are out to catch a killer.
It's moderately paced, compelling, and just wouldn't be the same without the killer twists skillfully thrown in by Hood.

ASTOUNDING addition to this terrific & unusual series by a great author. Lots of suspense in a very well written thriller with totally interesting & diverse characters. RECOMMEND this & all of the books with Kane & Alton who also appear in this series with Beth Katz. Kudos to a superb author.

I honestly don't know what I can say about this author's books that I have not said before. I can only praise her for her excellent books that turn into outstanding series. Whether you read this one or the one starring Jenna and Kane, you will always be reading a collection of excellent stories.
What I also love is that she does not make the recurring characters of one series feel left out because she has started a new one. They always make there appearance too. Some have a bigger role, and some a smaller one, but she does not neglect them. :)
I love Beth. She really does not shy away from any danger because she believes in what she stands for. Although a lot of people would condemn her, I am sure a lot of people would also applaud her. While she has to colour inside of the boxes and follow the rules as agent Beth Katz, she has no rules but her own when she becomes her alter ego.
She always has the perfect plan, but even the best thought out plan could go awry if you are not careful. Will Beth be able to keep the upper hand as per usual or is she really cutting it close...
As I already mentioned in the beginning, another remarkable sequel that keeps you guessing until the end. 5 stars

LOVE IT! Dark Hearts by DK Hood is the 3rd book in the series with Beth Katz.
I love the different perspective of Beth Katz being both FBI and a vigilante serial killer that rids the population of murderers that have escaped proper justice. It keeps you wondering about the character development but also about the murder at hand. I just want to know will Beth be able to continue playing both sides of the spectrum or will she get caught! I am hooked on the series for that alone!
The supporting characters are easy to like and feel attachment to. You get some character cross over from the Kane/Alton series and therefore it is fun to see the outsider perspective of some of our favorites from the other series.
I highly recommend this book. It could be read as a stand alone but i highly recommend delving into the entire series and start book one to see the growth and development. While you are at it, read the Alton/Kane series too!

Beth also investigates murders on the side in her ‘role’ as the tarot killer.
Another fantastic story. I loved how the suspense is built, especially when Beth is acting as the tarot killer. The relationship between Beth and Styles works really well. There’s a will they won’t they aspect as the sexual tension between them appears to ooze out. They make a great team. I really enjoy how there is a main case in this series, but also the undercover stuff that Beth investigates separately.
