When dragons are reborn into the world, the one thing driving them is their desire to claim me
Dragons shouldn’t exist. Being a science major, I know the difference between facts and fantasy, but that doesn’t change the fact that dragons have awakened into the world, and my scent is driving them crazy.
Because, get this, I’m a female dragon.
And the male dragons aren’t the only ones burning with heat.
Now, I’m on the run, with my two male best friends trying to save me, a sexy dragon trying to protect me, and an evil dragon on my tail.
Can I find my best friends and find a way to be safe in this new world? Or will I go down in flames?
SURGE OF HEAT is the first book in a very steamy paranormal reverse harem romance. It has possessive men, a strong heroine, mating fun, forced proximity, friends to lovers, and enemies to lovers.
Lacey Carter Andersen loves reading, writing, and drinking excessive amounts of coffee. She spends her days taking care of her husband, three kids, and three cats. But at night, everything changes! Her imagination runs wild with strong-willed characters, unique worlds, and exciting plots that she enthusiastically puts into stories.
Lacey has dozens of tales: science fiction romances, paranormal romances, short romances, reverse harem romances, and more. So, please feel free to dive into any of her worlds; she loves to have the company!
And you're welcome to reach out to her; she really enjoys hearing from her readers.

DNF at 40%. This book was was a drag to read. The pace was slow and nearly halfway in, all we know is that the three MCs are at a science school on a dangerous mountain. I was expecting a lot more. For starters, both Ayden and Sam were insufferable in their own ways. Ayden was possessive and controlling (and gave little context to Sam as to why he was that way) and Sam acted like a bratty child trying to show off in front of her crush. The only decent character was Granger, and even then he seemed more like a brother to Sam than a potential love interest. At 40%, there was no mention or knowledge of dragons, no inclination of an RH (just Ayden and Sam passive aggressively fighting) and no super secret life on the run. Was anything about the blurb true? I was hoping for a surprise shift for the FMC and then her two best friends to go into hiding with her and protect her with their lives whilst also battling their attraction. Instead I got a bunch of rocks. No thank you. 2/10.
This book has really good reviews and an interesting premise, but after reading the reviews and then reading the book, I was pretty disappointed. My first disappointment is the characters. They are all pretty immature. The FMC Sam is the worst, jumping to wrong conclusions, being angry and disrespectful to a man she supposedly loves but clearly doesn't respect and thinks doesn't respect her. Ayden also seems pretty weak as a character. I wouldn't say any of the characters were fleshed out well, the book tells you they are intelligent and hints at these qualities and history they have but it all feels a little shallow and superficial and the reader doesn't really know these characters by that end of this book despite it all being written from first hand pov. The 2nd disappointment is the fact I went into this book knowing that Sam is a female dragon from reading the blurb but she herself doesn't learn this until approximately halfway through the book, it's like having an extra long book introduction because other than relationship drama, barely anything happened until this point. Once the dragon part of the story started, it really didn't feel like there was much, by the end of the book, there is much unknown, not a lot has happened and it really feels like this is half a book. Will I read book 2? I will probably read and hope it gets better.
So much telling, not any showing. Bratty, insufferable FMC, a controlling MMC. Two characters who are in love and yet it's setting up to be a RH? With who else?? Not the guy she thinks of as her brother, who she consistently thinks about as being significantly less attractive than the man she's hopelessly in love with??? No because he deserves much better! And then let's discuss the behavior and dialogue because these characters are supposed to be in their 20s, right?
And don't even get me started on her suddenly turning into a mythical creature. 😐
Dragons! Surge of Fire is the first book in Lacey Carter Anderson's Dragon Bonds series. I've read plenty of Lacey's books but I think this is the first time I read about dragons from her and I was stoked!
Sam was really freaking cool. She's smart, like scientist smart, she goes on all these amazing adventures, has cool interests, and is a Ms. Sassy Boots, I liked her. Then she had a scary- movie-girl dumb moment that took her down a smidgen in my book. Like do not trust the arrogant jerk about the scientists, you are a scientist and know better!
I adore the friendship between Sam, Ayden, and Granger. They grew up together and have always been thick as thieves. However, feelings are starting to change between them and the tension becomes thick. It's all very angsty. I can't wait to see how things develop between the three of them in the next book. There was also a third guy and there might be a little enemies-to-lovers going on. He's an arrogant jerk who is more than a little sketchy. With her sass and his arrogance, I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out.
What an unexpected plot! The characters are all science nerds who enjoy nature and a bit of adventure. And this isn't a world with supernaturals, dragons are old just as much as they are new. There is some cultural anthropology that has them but no one thought they were real. Well, almost no one. I love the new mythology Lacey has created for dragons. I will say it's a first for me and is by far very interesting. This story feels like an adventure that blends science and the newly discovered supernatural. Things happen pretty quickly, and with all the action, danger, and angst, my attention was undivided.
Surge of Fire ended on a helluva cliffhanger. Everything is up in the air, relationships, safety, the world as they know it. We're at the point where things can go either and I have questions. Maybe I'll get them in Surge of Heat.
Book 1 is juvenile and angsty. Interesting science references dot the first half, while childhood friends refuse to confess their love for each other at research camp. Poof, the pnr, sci fi aspect pops in about halfway through. It's hard to like any of the main characters except Granger. Their personalities are just over the top and eye roll inducing.
"Surge of Fire" is the start of a fascinating urban fantasy series. It actually starts as a contemporary academy-type series, that evolves into a dragon shifter why choose storyline with characters unexpectedly discovering their shifter abilities. Add a bit of a friends to lovers trope, and something that can be described as an enemies with benefits trope, and you get an interesting story I can't wait to discover more about.
So far, I have to admit most of the characters still need to grow on me. The only two that left me with a good impression so far are our fmc Samantha and her buddy Granger. Unfortunately for him, the guy is complete friend-zoned so I'm curious to see how this will unfold in the future. Our other two dudes are behaving a little too much like cavemen who need to be put down a peg for the moment, but I suppose we'll find out how they'll evolve in the future.
There is already quite a bit of action to be found in this first book, making me suspect this entire series will be pretty action-packed. I'm excited to find out more in book two!
I loved this! It’s really interesting because the first half is almost a completely different world from the second half, I wasn’t sure where the dragons were going to fit. Once they’re out, all hell breaks loose. I’m very curious about the big bad Dragon and I’m also curious about what makes one. Evander was great, I love how respectful he tries to be even though his instincts are driving him crazy. I got super annoyed with Aydan, I understand his hesitation but he didn’t deal with it well. I’m still figuring out Granger and how he fits into everything. This was such a great book with wonderful world building I can’t wait for more!
As the 1st book of a new series, it has the absolute potential to be one of the best dragon books of the year. I kept re-reading the blurb to see if I'd missed something as it doesn't actually give much away.
So, along those lines, I won't be giving any spoilers either. Sam, our FMC is kookie and strong without being typical.
Our MMC's are not typical in any sense. The beginning of the book does not have a supernatural feel to it. It segues into something more, subtly. Then all of a sudden you're on a rollercoaster ride.
I'm excited for book 2 to see what happens next!!!
I think this was a great start to a new series! The story moves quickly and kept me interested. We get a bit of academy/institute, dragons, mates, friends to lovers, and RH. There was action, tension, mystery, and some unexpected twists.
I loved Samantha. She is smart, confident, and loveable. I'm liking the guys so far, but I still feel like we have more to learn about them.
The plot was captivating, the characters likeable, and we are left wanting more!! I can't wait for book 2!
This book pulled me in from the moment it started. I couldn’t put it down until I was finished. It was a look at dragon mythology in a way I’d never considered before. I loved Sam. I adored her best friends. I’m even kinda growing to like the mysterious military man. But, brightest lights of heaven, that ending is a cliffhanger and a half. Though, it has made absolutely certain-sure that I will be tuning in for the next book in the series. I need to know what happens next and I NEED to know it NOW! I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
My-flaming-word was this a brilliant start to this series!
Childhood friends - Samantha (FMC), Granger and Aydan have been out of each others lives for a few years but now their back together when they all enrol in the Phoenix Institute. A place where they will all study towards their goals in life but things don't go to plan whilst their there. Made more difficult for them all when so called dragons make an appearance. The plot twists and turns certainly kept me on my toes. I loved reading it.
I was hooked from the beginning, though I did find there was a bit of a lull after her awakening, hence only giving it 4 stars. Sam and Aydan have great chemistry and have, unbeknownst to each other, been in love for years. I enjoyed the storyline and I am excited to see what happens in the next book, especially after that cliffhanger.
This book is spicy hot in the best ways. There’s so much that happens it’s hard to write what I love without being spoilery. So I’ll say this dragons, who choose, spicy hot scenes, hot guys and a really intriguing plot that is just starting to unfold. Be prepared this does end on a bit of a cliffhanger but the rest is just that good I can’t even be mad about it. Counting the days til book 2!.
I received an ARC copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
An absolutely fabulous start to a new dragon shifter series! You do not want to miss this one! ✅dragon shifter ✅fated mates ✅forced proximity ✅friends to l0vers ✅enemies to l0vers ✅rh
Our FMC is a strong woman who clearly has something special about her. Her instincts are insane, her strength is obvious and her abilities are only going to get better. The entire first part is just her being super smart and wildly in tune with things. Then BOOM, literally, becomes a mythical in the last half of the book.
Our first love interest MMC is a bit of a jerk, treats FMC like a child in an attempt to "hide his feelings" but honestly all he's doing is hurting the woman he supposedly loves. Both him and FMC are clearly in love with each other and somehow both are oblivious to the others feelings. He needs to grow up and say how he feels and so does she.
MMC #2 is not shown as a love interest at all in this book, not sure if he will end up one or not, but I hope so. He's sweet, but super insecure because of his stocky build and isn't God like pretty. Seems kind of silly because he's also supposedly a genius and clearly built to be the tank of the group. As well as seems to be the most level headed and clearly is the glue for the "Wolf Pack" I'm rooting for him 100%.
MMC #3 was holy shit, too stupid to live, this dude shows up, does his GI Joe boot licker act, threatens and lies to FMC, even after presenting as a mythical himself STILL thinks a big money, gov run facility is gonna be a great place for and what is clearly his fated mate. Buddy, you got rocks for brains. He and FMC start a relationship of sorts almost instantly after he changes and honestly, I don't love it. He has so far been the worst MMC but somehow is the first to complete a bond. He's thinks only with his little head and it shows. Hoping he gets his head on straight in the next one.
DNF at 28%. The main girl and guy being into each other but too chickenshit to say anything is a trope I'm not interested in. They've been "in love" for years but sleep with other people bc they don't want to "ruin the friendship" or just like embarrass themselves? Nope. That ain't love. The girl literally told the guy that she intended to "get laid and get laid hard" by other guys. Like whattt? Ughhh. The cringe factor is just..so high. Like this is how older adults THINK that teenagers and young adults act, and there's just no connection to the characters themselves.

“Surge of Fire” expertly weaves a captivating tale of fantasy and romance set against the backdrop of the Phoenix Institute. The story follows Samantha, a determined young woman who dreams of a career at the prestigious institute after her summer enrollment. Reuniting with her lifelong friends, Aydan and Granger, Samantha's long-standing crush on Aydan brings an electric tension that drives the narrative forward.
Andersen’s writing is dynamic, which kept me engaged with a swift-paced plot filled with intriguing elements of academy life, dragons, and the beloved friends-to-lovers trope. The chemistry between Samantha and Aydan is palpable, as he struggles to conceal his feelings for her while simultaneously blocking her attempts to explore romantic connections with another student. This romantic tension is expertly crafted, making their interactions both heartwarming and frustratingly delightful.
The novel does not shy away from action, with plenty of twists and exciting developments that enhance the overall experience. Mystery and suspense intertwine with romance, as the characters navigate their relationships and challenges within the institute. This enticing first installment leaves readers eager for more, hinting at an action-packed series ahead.
Overall, “Surge of Fire” is a thrilling read that combines romance, magic, and adventure in a world full of possibility. Lacey Carter Andersen has set a strong foundation for the series, and I’m excited to see where the story goes in the next book!
It took a bit for her and the guys to realize dragons were real. Like maybe around 70% in. I also felt like the first 70% was pure fluff. Inner mind descriptions on how all three main characters thought about how they liked her but couldn’t tell her and vice versa. She had feelings for her 2 best guy friends but couldn’t tell them. It was a lot of back and forth and a bit of story sprinkled in about getting an internship at this Phoenix institute on a mountain. They haven’t seen each other in a few years as they were all at different colleges. Weird events like earth quakes, out driving or out running rock slides before a green male dragon appears after an earthquake. It steals the fmc and drops her from an insane height which is when she turns unexpectedly into a red dragon. Now is when a new military man steps onto the scene and becomes involved with her. He’s also a surprise dragon, seems any of the ppl up on that hill could become dragons. There was some foreshadowing happening, steamy sex scenes that include mating fever and being locked inside her. It’s not explicitly talked about but maybe he’s a mate to her. I still feel weird that her two friends that she’s been in love with since kids may have missed their chance with her if Evander has his way. They need to find her! My anxiety is so high right now. Thank goodness the next 2 books are out.
Wow this new series by Lacey Carter Andersen was amazing! All Samantha wanted to do for the summer was hang out with her best friends, Granger and Ayden, while partaking at the super elite Pheonix Institute. Things are a little stilted with her and Ayden – especially since she’s been in love with him forever and he thinks of her as still a little girl needing protection, well that’s what she believes, at least. Ayden also has been in love with her, but he is afraid to potentially lose that friendship if she doesn’t feel the same.
But when things start getting heated and a massive earthquake occurs while they are in a cave in the mountains, the story takes a HUGE shift… bringing in a dragon who captures Samantha. She somehow also becomes a dragon and does everything she can to get away from the green dragon. On her way out, she nearly runs into Evander, who is ex military and now works for a huge company that financially supports the Institute, and he was there to try to track down the dragon if one actually showed up. Except he gets a big surprise too.
My only thing is that I fell in love with Ayden and Samantha, so the change in romance to Evander made me sad. I hope this ends up being a RH in the next book, so that way Samantha can have both! But I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens!
This started and finished with tension filled scenes!
Samantha is attending the Phoenix Institute over the summer and when she graduates from college it would be her dream to work there. Her lifelong friends Aydan and Granger are also going to be there and she hasn't seen them since starting college but has had romantic feelings for Aydan for years which could maybe be an issue. There is definitely tension between the two as he is secretly in love with her too so sets out blocking her attempts to have a fling with another fellow student on the course. But all is not what it seems at the institute. Mysterious earthquakes, a unique crystal cavern set in the mountainside and then the appearance of a dragon! Separated and running for their lives the 3 are determined to find their way back to each other but with a dragon literally trying to get his claws into Sam, this is going to be easier said than done.
I loved this from the first sentence to the last. It was filled with tension and we get some good steamy scenes too. I have my suspicions about Aydan and Granger, the author has dropped heavy hints about what their fate is but we will have to wait and see. A big toe curling cliffhanger ended this book which had me clicking to see when the next book is out. Thankfully it doesn't look like it is going to be too long as I really can't wait!
First and foremost, the cliffhanger on this GOT ME. Like, I acknowledged I only had about 30 pages left before I started reading again, and yet when I flipped that last page and REALIZED it was the last page, my mouth literally hung open. It was likely comical if anyone had seen it. I was OFFENDED. lol. Now, in regards to the book itself, there’s something to say about how realistically college characters are portrayed. Not solely focused on school, but still dedicated, while determined to also have their fair share of fun. So many books portray college as being one way or the other when it’s not always, or even usually, the case. It was refreshing to see characters with dedication to their classes, but also determination to have a good time outside of those classes. I also enjoyed just how much the characters LOVED and were passionate about what they were doing and their goals.
The relationship between the characters is complex and complicated through this first book. There is quite a bit of steam, but not necessarily how you’ll expect it to happen, and not til later in the book. I do however adore the closeness of Sam and the guys. And how loyal and protective they are of that friendship and each other. I can’t wait for the next book.
Surge of Fire is a new RH series that has dragon shifters in it...although some don't know they are dragons.
Sam thinks she's getting a great opportunity to work for the Phoenix Institute for the summer and hoping it might turn it into a full time placement. She's extra excited that her two best friends will be there as well. She's had a massive crush on Aydan for years. It turns it that he has had one on he too. But they are too scared to tell the other one. They'll have to figure things out when an earthquake injures Granger and Aydan, and a dragon takes off with Sam in its claws.
Sam's whole world changes when she becomes a red dragon and escapes the green one. She wants to find Aydan and Granger but the green dragon is looking for her. She comes across Evander and he has had has own run in with the dragon. But when she learns he works for the company that has been funding the Phoenix Institute, she's not sure she should be anywhere near him. In her attempt to ditch him, he has another run in with the green dragon. This again changes everything! Now Sam finds herself being tracked down by two dragons! And Granger and Aydan are trying to get to her but they find themselves in the sights of the green dragon at the end of this book.

"Surge of Fire" by Lacey Carter Andersen is a decent start to the Dragon Bonds series. The story follows a young woman who discovers she is a female dragon halfway through the book. Her scent drives male dragons crazy, and she finds herself on the run, trying to escape an evil dragon. Meanwhile, her two male best friends are trying to find and help her, and a sexy dragon is trying to protect her.
While the book had its strengths, there were aspects that left me wanting more. I felt that things progressed a bit too quickly with Evander, and I wished the green dragon could have communicated with the characters. The book is labeled as a reverse harem, but this element wasn't fully developed in this installment. I'm curious to see how this aspect will unfold in future books, especially with characters like Aydan and Granger.
One aspect I particularly enjoyed was the ability for characters to mind talk, which happens closer to the end and adds an interesting layer to the story. Despite these drawbacks, the plot was engaging enough to keep me interested, and I'm excited to see what happens in the next book. Overall, it was an okay read, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the story develops.
It's undetermined if I'm going to like this series or not. I'm not sure what the plot is yet. The characters leave a lot to be desired. I thought that Sam and her friends would reforge their friendship, but it seems to be in shambles. That's confusing, because people who have been friends since early childhood should have an easier time of communicating, even if they've been apart a few years. They were still talking even though they were apart, so the awkwardness is strange. What really has me questioning if I'll like this series or not is the whole Evander thing. That came out of nowhere and was really frustrating for me. I feel like Sam is unfaithful. I know she wasn't with her friends in that way, but she wanted to be. So Evander comes from left field and now Sam is all over him? She doesn't even know him! Yes, the dragon hormone thing plays into it. But she says that they're human too, so why can't she control herself. It was super disappointing and I was actually disgusted by her. Maybe Evander will prove to be a good person, but right now I'm not convinced. So I'll read on to see if things get better, but right now it's undetermined if this series is worth reading.
