Belles of Belfast

Get ready to dive into the pulsating heart of modern-day Belfast with Lucy McMullan’s long-anticipated novel, “Belles of Belfast.” In this empowering and steamy tale, meet Anna – a freshly single woman navigating the tumultuous post-breakup landscape, armed with nothing but her wit and the desire to reclaim her self-worth.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of Belfast, Anna takes centre stage as the creator of the audacious podcast, ‘Belles of Belfast.’ Turning her dating woes into a public spectacle, she fearlessly shares her romantic escapades, creating a captivating mix of humour, vulnerability, and unabashed sexuality. Think “Sex in the City” meets “Bridget Jones” with a dash of the irreverent spirit of “Derry Girls.”
Unlike typical Northern Irish narratives, religion takes a backseat in this metropolitan tale. “Belles of Belfast” breaks free from the shackles of sectarianism, presenting a refreshing, empowering narrative that transcends traditional divides. This is more than a novel; it’s a love letter to Belfast, a testament to the strength of its people, and a reminder that even in the midst of heartbreak, laughter can be the best medicine. This contemporary story aims to inspire young women to embrace their lives with confidence, devoid of shame and full of self-love.
As Anna encounters an array of captivating men, the story takes a scintillating turn, delving into the realms of passion and desire. From the older, wealthier Mr. Millionaire to the enigmatic Mr. Mysterious, each character challenges Anna, leading her on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment.
Buckle up for a ride filled with steamy encounters that will make your heart race. “Belles of Belfast” is not just a novel; it’s a celebration of femininity, resilience, and the unapologetic pursuit of pleasure. Lucy McMullan’s storytelling prowess brings to life a tale that is as hot as it is heart-warming, as audacious as it is empowering – a must-read for those seeking a bold, modern take on love, lust, and self-discovery

4.5 ✨ think of this as Derry girls , but in book form , but Belfast 🤣
I adored this book from start to finish. As a fellow Belle of Belfast this book captured life perfectly, while reading it , it was so captivating that it really made you think that Anna life experiences could be happening to you or your mate or your sister and it was such a resonating story.
It was a really refreshing take on Belfast that didn’t go into our past and instead focused on building it up and showcasing its power and beauty.
It was a book that emphasised friendships and self love and feminity but in a way that showed that life and the journey you take isn’t a clear cut path and you’ll falter at times but to embrace it and make the most out of life.
It’s the type of book that I was I had when I was growing up because I know it would’ve impacted me a lot and even at 26 I’m still constantly learning about life and myself so it was a very enlightening and empowering read.

A hefty book that started slow but picked up as the book went on. It was lovely reading a story set in familiar places. The book is a bit Belfast Bridget Jones but it does get better as it goes on.

The definitions of Belfast phrases at the start of the chapters was interesting but when it was throughout the chapter it broke up the flow a bit - maybe a footnote or glossary might have worked better.

Really enjoyed this. Sex in the City vibe with a vibrant Belfast background. I love that I’ve visited so many of the places mentioned and have my own history with the locations. I liked the main character, Anna and the way she was open to delve into her insecurities and her inner struggles.
The reason for no fifth star was the way she wrote of female empowerment but then made one of the female best friends commit the betrayal. Why is it the one that was most confident with her sexuality ends up being the bad one? Just didn’t seem fitting. Would have preferred a more complicated story there instead of vilifying her.

Looking for a rainy day, sunny day, any day GREAT SUMMER READ? You need to read this….

I recently visited Belfast, Ireland from Florida, USA and was already missing being back there. I needed to find a way to feel like I was still there.

I subscribe to #travellernorthernireland on Instagram and this is where I was introduced to Lucy McMullan’s-Belles of Belfast.

The book brings you intimately into the life of Anna (the main character), her friends, work and dating life. I feel anyone, any age, reading this book can relate to at least one of the characters in this book.

It is a fun, contemporary, adventurous, entertaining escape from realism. I could not put the book down (I ended up buying the paperback & Kindle version so I could read it all night long).

I won’t lie but I think Anna(Lucy) may have taught me a few new sex ed tips. LOL. But I think the biggest take I got from reading the book was teaching yourself to love and respect yourself.

This book is also a must read for anyone who has visited or wants to visit Belfast. The author, Lucy, describes everything so clearly. I found myself looking up the locations she mentions in the book to see if I could visit them myself in the future and bonus-YES, YES you can.

Already ready for a sequel…

I read pretty much all of this over the course of 2 days and LOVED IT 🥰 the writing was so engaging and entertaining, I was able to picture Belfast in sm detail, I loved the characters and the relationships between all of them!! Some absolutely hilarious lines:

“… where I not only found my phone … but also a bright orange traffic cone. I had no idea where it came from and refused to entertain the hazy memories of me believing it would be hilarious to bring it home while I was highly intoxicated.”

anyone from Northern Ireland can relate

Think Derry Girls in book form—but with more sass, more sex, and all the heart of modern-day Belfast. I adored Belles of Belfast from start to finish. As a Northern Irish girl myself, this book felt like a breath of fresh air. It captures what it's like to be navigating your twenties in Belfast so well; messy, hilarious, empowering, and sometimes chaotic in the best way.

Anna’s podcast idea was brilliant, turning heartbreak into something raw, funny, and empowering. The dating scenes were a brilliant mix of steamy and relatable, with everything from Mr. Millionaire to Mr. Mysterious. I loved how it explored different types of relationships (including the not-so-healthy ones). And yes, I saw that plot twist coming, especially from who it was. The signs were there early on, and honestly, their behaviour screamed narcissistic traits. It made the twist hit harder because you knew something was off from the start.

Beyond the drama, it was the little details that made this shine; the bitchy friendships, the moments of self-doubt, the road trips and laughter, and the constant push-pull of figuring life out. It didn’t shy away from tough moments but also never lost its humour. Lucy McMullan’s writing style was gorgeous, down-to-earth, witty, and full of heart.

What I really appreciated was how this story didn’t dwell on Belfast’s past, it showed a thriving, bold version of the city and its women. It was a celebration of femininity, friendship, and figuring yourself out at your own pace.
I honestly wish I had this book when I was younger because even now, in my late twenties, I’m still learning about life, love, and who I am. It felt validating to read something that captures that messy in-between phase, especially knowing our brains aren’t even fully cooked until 25 minimum!

If you’re looking for a story that’s sexy, smart, funny, and full of relatable chaos, Belles of Belfast is it. More of this energy, please. Looking forward to reading more books written by Lucy.

I never really write reviews but I feel really compelled to share on this one!!!!

I really expected to go into this book and read the same rehashed romance tropes and storylines we've seen over and over (not a negative thing I love them)

But I have never been so pleasantly surprised.

I'm not sure if it's because I live in Northern Ireland and have been to many of the places mentioned first hand that I was engaged throughout this book - maybe there's some kind of bias there??? But the genuine pride and love of the country we live in that was written on these pages was so refreshing and endearing.

Yes there are love interests and breakups (expectedly so) but the absolute girlhood included in this story really struck a chord with me. I expected a romance novel with some girly friendships thrown in but to me this was a book on self love, discovery and feeling bonded with the girls around us with a sprinkle of romance (and not ONE tiring political narrative that our country is sadly known for).

I have a list of friends I am absolutely going to force to read this book, I wish in another life someone was able to hand me this book six years ago. I'm not saying this is the most linguistically beautiful book with a deep twisty plot that I've read, but it's definitely one of the more thought provoking and heartwarming books I've ever had the pleasure of opening. It touched on topics of self love and how to deal with the struggles of love and relationships that I really think a lot of people need to hear.

I feel lighter after reading this and could not give it any less than 5 ⭐️

Lucy McMullan is now officially a national treasure in my eyes

I never really leave reviews on here but for this one, I had to!

I have never felt more seen by a book ever! ❤️

To imagine this book came out of stories of wee Belfast, I’m so proud of it and Lucy, master story-teller, giving us Anna’s story in a way that most NI girls can relate to. The way that Anna’s story is developed, not mentioning anything about NI’s past but focusing on bringing together women, supporting them, voicing what many of us would think to ourselves, and promoting Belfast as a place where there’s always a good bit of craic and always a great night out to be had, I loved this book with all of my heart!

This will be what everyone gets for birthdays and Christmas this year - if they read one book this year, it’ll be this one!

Also side note: can confirm, Belfast’s dating pool is that dire 😂

Ben a while since I read a book in 2 days but this is exceptional I could not put this down.

The authors instagram account started following me a couple of months ago so I was aware of the book and I picked it up and started reading it and I couldn't put it down. Lucy McMillan's writing is engaging clever and precise and yeah one of the most talented storytellers I have read in a long time.

Great characters that you end up caring about and laughing with.

I have lived in Belfast for 5 years now as a Norwegian and it is a city that has captured my heart and this books descriptions of Belfast is beautiful.

It is hard to write good spice, this has some very good spicy chapters.

An absolute must read for anyone and the absolute best debut novel I have ever read. Masterpiece.

I enjoyed this! Anna, Paddy, and Grace are fun characters. The Belles of Belfast podcast stuff was good. I did get bored at some points, and I wasn't too into the main relationship of the main character, I just don't enjoy constant fighting. He'll walk into a room, and the mc would just start. Overall, it was enjoyable, but it wasn't 5 star worthy.

On another note, "It's not as if we're alcoholics, we're just Irish! "Wonder why he doesn't drink." I hummed. "Rare you meet a sober Irish-man. " Can we please, please stop with the Irish and alcohol thing! I really hate it.

I would have maybe reviewed this as 4⭐️ if the author hadn't described someone as OCD because the room was neatly set out. That's not OCD and I'm tired of authors misusing it!

Belles of Belfast a closely set book within the heart of Belfast and some of Northern Ireland. A fun loving and care free book, a book I wish younger me had read to have the advice older me is so grateful to have. I often found pieces of myself within this book. This book is one of empowerment, resilience and adding strength to each woman who takes their time to read this book.
This book is a testament to Lucy and to every “Belle of Belfast”. I thought this book was great in helping to understand society’s understanding of ‘consent’, and how friends can at times under regard your feelings.
A true inspirational, empowering and loving book.

I feel soooo incredibly conflicted over this book bc I really really wanted to love it but I just couldn’t fully get into it. I just didn’t really care if Anna and Amir got with each other, and I felt like they just hated each other. How quickly they went from hot to cold was just a bit off putting. Also didn’t really understand why Paddy changed his tune so quickly with Amir? What I will say is this book is a beautiful love story about being in love with Belfast, and I’m glad I waited till I moved back to read it bc I would’ve been an emotional mess reading it in London. Also super glad Olivia turned out to be a dick bc I really hated her character throughout.

Where do I even start? This book felt like a hug after a hard day for me. I feel like I went on a much needed healing journey with Anna reading this…which I did in less than 24hrs may I add because I could not for the life of me put this book down.

Incredibly relatable, hilarious, and the theme of self love and the value of female friendships was so well written. I was so proud of Anna and what she had achieved that I shed a few wee happy tears 😂😂😂

Oh and holy feck the spice was GREAT. Amir lives in my head rent free and I’m very okay with it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Perfect post breakup book!

I throughly enjoyed every aspect of Belles of Belfast. Just coming out of a relationship this book had so much feminine wisdom and support in a way that has been part of my jigsaw piece healing era. Love a bit of forbidden romance so the will they/ won't they scenerio was up my street. I love how perfectly Nortgern Irish this book is too, the definitions and the dead pan wit we NI folk have came through a lot. I am really looking forward to read whatever comes from Lucy next.

Lucy McMullan has written a compelling (and steamy) story, that is a realistic depiction of the challenges in modern day relationships and friendships. The author’s writing is engaging and humorous and I found myself highlighting many phrases (which is unusual for me when reading fiction). The themes regarding relationships and self-worth are important and relevant. Teachings are woven through the pages. I loved ‘Belles of Belfast.’ Congratulations Lucy. I look forward to your next book.

Belles of Belfast is a stunning debut from a very talented author.

Lucy has captured the true essence of Belfast and what it means to be a young woman finding herself here.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter titles and all the Norn Iron definitions sprinkled throughout the book!

A beautiful story of friendship, growth, self love and the risks we take to build the life we truly deserve!

Will definitely read more from this author!

One of the most heart breaking, heart warming and raw books I have read in a long time.
The author had me gripped from the first few pages and I just couldn't set it down.
I am a very seasoned reader and am rarely this impressed by a new author, but can genuinely say, I am a fan from the get go.
I 100% recommend this book and even nore so the author, I cannot wait for her next book, I will be first in the queue!

My favourite part of this whole book was Grace and Anna’s friendship. It was so lovely to read about two genuine best friends who supported each other and loved each other throughout the good and bad. It was also so special to read a book and know the places that are being described. I would love to find out how Anna’s life continues & to see how her career develops. This book was a love letter to women in general, but especially women from Northern Ireland 🩷 absolutely loved it.

FANTASTIC- lived it from start to finish, even book the book as was desperate to read instead of waiting for Kindle edit.
The book speaks to all women on how we feel in our relationships, marriage, friendship circles etc. I read lots and they don’t all have me hooked from start to finish, invested in learning & thinking about myself and the situation I am in.

I pray & hope for book two….

Randomly picked this book up at Waterstones just before Christmas. Didn’t read the back just seen that it was an Irish author and thought it would be nice to show support. I didn’t expect to devour the book within two nights! I read alot and don’t give out 5 star reviews lightly but this book deserves all the stars! Beautifully written and also hilarious! Congratulations Lucy! I hope there is a book 2🤞🏻
