I happily live in Kansas with my wonderful husband and snuggle-pup, (who is most definitely spoiled,) and spend the long winter months trying to figure out how to fill my yard with flowers so I never have to mow again. When I'm not working with my beloved elderly clients, I'm turning blood into ink, talking to people who don't exist, creating entire worlds and spending way too much time plotting how to cause the most pain with my stories—all while making a general nuisance of myself and eating far too many cookies…(which isn't actually possible, because there's no such thing as too many cookies.) My existence is dependent on Jesus, copious and questionable amounts of magic bean juice, and grace, while I rearrange all 26 letters of the alphabet (under a pen-name) and gleefully use semi-colons liberally and incorrectly. (Thank goodness I have an amazing editor.) Often I compare myself to a horrible goose or a crow—for I hold a great secret desire to chase people around while screeching as I collect shiny things.

Thank you so much for taking an interest in me and my baby, it means the world to me. I've held this dream close to my heart for as long as I can remember and I am both thrilled and terrified to be putting the first book out into the world.

"Breaking Grimm" – or as I like to call it, 'Emotional Devastation: The Musical (But With More Stabbing)

E.R. Brookes has done it again—by which I mean, emotionally mugged me in a dark alley of feels, set the alley on fire, and then whispered, “There’s a third book coming.”

Where "Kidnapping Grimm" felt like a shadowy fairytale dragged through a Hollywood action movie, "Breaking Grimm" is its angstier, war-torn, older sibling who wears too much eyeliner, trusts no one, and has trauma for dinner.

The Plot?

No spoilers, but just know this:
There’s betrayal. There’s blood. I mean, a lot of blood. The sisters are more stitches than flesh at this point. There’s a kiss that made me drop my Kindle and walk around my apartment like I’d just been personally wronged. Curses, destiny, and fairytales are thrown in the mix. Someone’s possibly dead but probably not because drama. Did God just show up? And a certain morally ambiguous character went full “you either die a hero or become the fan favorite.”

The Worldbuilding?

Still lush. Still haunted. But now with extra kingdoms, creepy forests that are possibly sentient, and a court so toxic it could be studied by scientists.

The Romance?

It's fated. It's dramatic. It's what the genre asks. For me, personally, it moves a bit too fast and it's a bit too constant. But that might just be my shrivelled blackened heart speaking.
I also don't want to focus on how old the fey whose love interest is a 20 year old is supposed to be.
But, again, this is how romance in fantasy is, Brookes did a good job.

The Banter?

Sharper than a cursed dagger. More potent than the poison that is definitely a metaphor for unresolved issues.

Minor gripe:
I feel like, at times, there's too much exposition. I feel the author is scared that we don't get the characters intentions well enough. But we do, because the writing is very good, very organic, and very human.

Highly recommend if you like:
🗡 Characters who need therapy but settle for Stabbing things
🔥 Romantic tension you could toast marshmallows on
👑 Intrigue, betrayal, and outfits that scream “regal but make it dangerous”
🖤 Finding out your faves are morally gray and suddenly you question whether you've been a horrible person all along

Final thoughts:
I finished this book, stared into the void, and said, “I trust no one and I need book three immediately.”

If you liked Kidnapping Grimm, you are going to absolutely love Breaking Grimm! The moment I started reading I felt as if I was right there with Ember, Evadne, and Faye. I literally could feel what they felt and see what they were seeing. This book keeps you guessing. You think you know what is going to happen, then things change sending your thoughts to a different conclusion. You feel love, hate, anger, and sorrow for the characters. As you read you are on your seat with anticipation, just waiting for what is to come next. You do need to read the first book to get the history on the story before starting with this one. E.R. Brookes is an amazing writer and an absolutely amazing young lady. I can’t wait to read the third book in this series.

This book was amazing! The first book was good, but this one left me speechless!! So many twists and turns and surprises. The characters develop and bonds are made. I found myself rooting for characters I hadn’t yet come to like in the first book and felt their pain and heartbreak. (Cough: Artemis 🥰) This is a darker read than many ya books but it deals with some deeper issues than most do as well; deep depression, loss, fear of life, sacrifice, but also strength, family, working through problems, and love isn’t always straightforward and simple. Life can be hard and complicated and this books handles them all so beautifully! Cannot recommend enough.
