Far From Home #8

Winter Longing

Rate this book
Firefighter and professional lacrosse player, Cole Carter, finds himself fantastically thrust back in time to 1303 Scotland. Struggling to adapt to the perilous medieval world, Cole faces suspicion and hostility from the fierce Highland clan with whom he finds shelter from the harsh winter.

Ailsa Sinclair, a sheltered young woman under the strict protection of her brother, Laird Tavis Sinclair, is at first wary and soon intrigued by Cole’s tales of the future. Against her brother’s wishes, Aisla secretly helps Cole navigate his new reality, teaching him the ways of 14th century Scotland while finding herself drawn to this mysterious stranger.

As Cole and Aisla’s bond deepens, so does the enmity of Tavis, who sees Cole as a threat to both his clan and his sister’s safety. Their forbidden romance blossoms amidst rising tensions, until a traitor reveals Cole’s origins at the same time the clan faces an imminent threat from an invading force.

In the heat of battle, Cole must prove his worth, fighting for the clan that has both challenged and changed him. Will Cole earn the respect of the laird and secure a place in this ancient world, or will the future reclaim him, tearing him forever apart from Aisla?

As with all books in the Far From Home series, Winter Longing is a stand-alone novel. The characters from different books do sometimes interact, but these can be read in any order.

Cole Carter, firefighter and lacrosse pro was transported back to 1303 Scotland, how and why is unknown. Suddenly he had two goals—find his friend Tank and get them both back to 2024. Cole is found, freezing and weak, by Ailsa, Chatelaine of Torr Cinnteag, and sister of Laird Tavis, an impatient and unsympathetic leader of the clan. Suspicions of Cole and his friend Tank abound. They need to prove themselves honest while keeping their origin a secret, sharing it only with a select few. Those few won't betray them, but they don't really believe them either. Cole and Tank are assigned to be warriors where Tavis and his generals can keep an eye on them and assess their abilities, fearing they might be spies for the English. Cole and Tank do their best to assimilate, training to fight and ride and do other necessary tasks. Ailsa assists Cole as much as she can get away with, as they are both drawn to one another, but she must do so outside the watch of her brother who would disapprove. Despite being untrue, Ailsa's reputation is sullied which leads to an unanticipated turn of events and effects Cole's outlook on his future, leading to a dramatic climax and resolution to the story.

I enjoyed this story—the difficulties Cole and Tank met with while trying to fit in with the medieval community they were suddenly plopped into; the different personalities they had to navigate; the challenges of war; etc. etc... This had a different perspective with the time travelers being men as opposed to women—there was more suspicion and rougher treatment, and more resistance to Cole and Tank proving themselves to be without malice. All in all it was an entertaining read with interesting details about medieval life, and several unexpected surprises thrown in too.

I like both Ailsa and Cole, but the romance was boring. There was no explanation of magic like the earlier books in the series. It did pick up towards the end and got interesting. I did absolutely love Tank, and I wish he had his own book.
I did love the ending and the closure towards the end. It made me tear up, which honestly was perfect, and I wished the other books ended similarly with the same closure.

A very enjoyable read.

This is a great series. I love the time-travel aspect. This time it’s two male American firefighters who are transported to Scotland in 1302 during the first Scottish War of Independence. Great characters and plot.

very good book

A bit slow at first, not as exciting as some of other Highlander novels, but all in all, has believable characters, and with just right amount of romance.
Keep it going, Rebecca!

Scottish time travel

Enjoyed the story and character development. Four stars because of the over the top descriptions of clothes, rooms, landscape that interfered with the story. The story was well developed and enjoyable without all the detailed environmental elements.

Winter Longing

As Cole and Hank went to Scotland and up on Ben Nevis a somewhat storm took them to 1302 from 2024. Learning to live a new life was difficult. Surviving a war and decided they liked their new world.

The book is a total flip of the usual girl travels through time. This time is a guy and thank heavens a friend with him. Rebecca is brilliant in telling this story.

it was interesting to read of a MMC going back in time and seeing how his modern abilities translate into historical non-ability lol, even if he was so well fit in modern standards! i didnt really care for the romance with Cole and Alisa but it was okay. the Cole/Tank friendship was more interesting. but it was cool to see the impact of not having a man in the 14th century as your "sponsor"/protector, but rather a woman of the 14th century, who inherently has way less power and ability to vouch for a strange man who has shown up, than a laird does for a strange woman who has shown up.
