When Julia Collins reluctantly sets foot on Sister Island, compelled by her wealthy grandmother’s will, she is intent on claiming her inheritance and moving on. But when she experiences the peaceful, faith-filled life of the island occupants, and their handsome Lightkepper, William, Julia finds herself confronting the open wounds of her parents’ deaths and looking for something more.
William Dodge, lightkeeper of Sister Island, harbors a heart hardened by a past betrayal. Between that and his chronic pleurisy, he has become disinterested in love. So when Julia arrives on the island, bursting with vitality and unconventional notions, William’s world is turned upside down. As she chips away at the walls William has built for himself, he finds his reluctance to love again waning.
But just as love begins to blossom between them, Julia is faced with a tempting proposal from a prominent Brockville family. Will Julia succumb to societal expectations, or will she choose the newfound richness of her island life and the love of the steadfast lightkeeper?

Imagine standing at the edge of Sister Island with waves crashing against the cliffs and the lighthouse casting its steady glow over restless waters—like a beacon calling out to every lost heart in the fog of life’s trials. Julia’s Joy by Susan G. Mathis spins a tale that romantic and deeply rooted in faith, healing, and the power of God’s presence amid both calm and storm. All readers who crave stories that blend heartfelt romance with spiritual depth, Julia’s Joy is for you!
Julia Collins arrives with a heart full of questions, grief, and ambitions that clash with the simplicity of island life. But the spiritual serenity of the place, coupled with the steadfast William Dodge, begins to chip away at her hardened walls. It’s not just the allure of the lighthouse or the island’s unyielding beauty that captivates her; it’s the sense of peace and purpose that permeates its air—a life centered on God, with faith as steady as the lighthouse beam piercing through dark, lonely waters. This theme struck a chord in me, especially the way William’s faith brilliantly and consistently shines through his actions, words, and quiet strength. His reminder to Julia, “You’re never alone, Julia. God said, ‘I am always with you, even to the end of the world’,” is like a balm not only to her weary soul but to every reader who’s ever felt isolated or adrift.
Mathis crafts William as a man who doesn’t merely follow faith as a creed but as a living, breathing compass guiding every step. (“What he believed wasn’t merely a set of rules but a binding force that weathered the worst storms.”) His unwavering trust in God is a rarity and seeing him share this foundational love with Julia—who’s only beginning to seek God for herself—is beautiful. In a world where society often calls us to fleeting pleasures, this story lifts up the enduring richness of faith and commitment. As William reflects, “The Bible isn’t just a book, Julia. It is truth. It holds the best counsel for understanding our purpose and finding closeness to God.” These words, spoken with conviction, echo as deeply as the sound of waves hitting the rocks.
Aunt Dee’s gentle wisdom is another highlight, reminding Julia that God’s presence isn’t always a roar but sometimes a whisper: “Sometimes God’s signs are subtle, like a whisper in the wind. Or a gentle touch.” This gentle message encourages us to pause, breathe, and listen for those subtle yet profound ways God reaches into our lives. The novel left me thinking about how many times I have overlook these nudges while waiting for more obvious signs.
Through Julia’s journey, Mathis doesn’t just deliver a heartwarming romance; she paints a portrait of God’s love that fills the hollows of grief and loss, just as the steady beam of Sister Island’s lighthouse illuminates even the darkest corners of the surrounding sea.
If you’re drawn to tales where rugged landscapes mirror the inner journey of the soul, or if you love novels where characters grow closer to God as they grow closer to each other, then Julia’s Joy is a must-read.
I received a digital ARC of Julia’s Joy from the publisher, author, and Celebrate Lit Publicity Group. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
There really wasn't much to this story at all. So, admittedly, I skimmed a lot of it just to get through. The characters were nice, I especially liked William. And I appreciated Julia's journey towards faith and all that transpired through that. But overall a very slow read and not my usual style. If you enjoy that kind of story, then this is for you.
The Author’s vibrant descriptions of the landscape surrounding the lighthouse and her vivid details of the work required of the light keepers allowed me to experience the story first hand. I could see the sunsets, feel the breeze off the river, and enjoy the experience of seeing the world from the lighthouse parapet.
But I could also embrace William’s struggle with his health and feelings of inadequacy and ache with Julia in her struggle with letting go of the past with its heartaches and loneliness. As I journeyed with Julia as she opened her heart to faith in God, my own heart was stirred with the greatness and awesome power and love of my God.
This was a well-written, Biblically-filled, heart-opening novel and I enjoyed it. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and these are my voluntary and honest opinions. I was not required to leave a positive review.
Susan Mathis is a wonderful author. She writes books that can be read as stand alones but yet intertwines characters within series and even across series. I have read quite a few of Mathis’ books and enjoyed seeing characters as adults that I previously met in earlier series as children. Many of the books I have read written by Mathis (maybe all) are set in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River. Julia’s Joy focuses on Julia, a Canadian who just lost her last remaining family member. At the request (demand) of her grandmother’s will, Julia goes to spend time with her grandmother’s friend (and son) in one of the Thousand Islands lighthouses. Julia doesn’t understand the why of her grandmother’s request but as the summer proceeds, she falls in love with the island, the God of the island dwellers, and the lighthouse keeper. There are even a few surprises thrown in that make the story even sweeter. Julia’s Joy is an adult novel but there is nothing in it to keep it from being added to a K-12 Christian school library. High school girls will enjoy the romance of the story. I received a complimentary copy of Julia’s Joy. This is my honest review.
An enchanting story rich in historical context of what it entails being a lighthouse keeper. I loved Julia’s journey to finding true joy as she embarks on a new adventure per her granny’s will to stay on an island with the lighthouse keeper & his mother. It is a journey of finding herself and finding her way back to her Lord. I felt like I could taste the salty air and feel the breeze in my hair as my toes waded into the water. William is a perfect hero as he gives Julia space to explore her faith and her future. I loved the interaction between William and his mother and their love for the island and how their faith was interwoven into the story. It is a story of faith, family, sweet romance, and leaving baggage behind. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to more by this author. I received a complimentary copy from CelebrateLit/publisher. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
I really enjoyed reading this book! I've often thought about how fun it would be to live in a lighthouse! This book has themes of forgiveness, second chances, and the true meaning of family.
Julia has had many profound losses in her life. She goes to spend the summer on Sister Island with the lighthouse keeper and his mother. There, she finds rest for her soul, a new family, and a purpose for her life. William is adorable in a grumpy old man way even though he's young! In Julie, he finds a love like he's never known. He also has the privilege to guide an eager heart toward salvation.
So many adventures are had by Julia and William! They save several people's lives and learn new skills each day! I can't wait to read the other books in this series!
Mathis has another engaging story set in the Thousand Islands. Julia’s sojourn at the Sister Island lighthouse is a requirement to receive the promised inheritance from her Granny. Will it pay off in more ways than she could have ever anticipated? William, the Sister Island lighthouse keeper, suffers physically and emotionally and is cautious of the newcomer. Will these two find “the island becomes a place of healing and self-discovery”?
Be transported to another time and place in this beautifully written novel, second in a series, by author Susan G. Mathis. The plot centered around socialite Julia Collins whose grandmother’s will compelled her to spend the summer at Sister’s Island, and reserved and hardworking light keeper William Dodge. Their relationship developed slowly and realistically, with each one having to overcome past hurts from recent years. Living on a remote island, the cast of characters was small and the pace of life slow, except for the ship-related visits, encounters, and incidents that occurred that added interest, excitement, and sometimes danger to their island existence.
Two things really stood out for me with this book. One was the exquisitely written coming-to-faith story that involved deep soul-searching and prayer. The other was the way the author’s words to describe physical and emotional backdrops and scenes reminded me of an artist putting paint to a canvas, which is interesting since Julia, the heroine, is an artist. If you are looking for a book that will inspire you spiritually, definitely pick up this one. Am really enjoying this series!
I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher. A positive review was not required and these are my honest opinions.
This is one of the most sensory-stimulating books I have read. It often left me tasting the air, breathing the aromas of home-cooked meals, and delighting in the pallet of colors spilled across water at sunset. I felt I’d lived—and loved—at the lighthouse.—Davalynn Spencer
In Julia's Joy, the second book in the Love at a Lighthouse series, Susan G. Mathis presents a simple story about finding faith and love in the idyllic setting of a lighthouse.
Julia was a sweet character. It was interesting seeing how her reluctance to be at the lighthouse morphed into a love and appreciation for the simple lifestyle that allowed her to focus on more simple things. Julia's faith journey was fascinating; I loved seeing how she grew to rely on her Savior.
William was kind and considerate. I loved watching how he performed his duties at the lighthouse. I also enjoyed how he was eager to share his faith with Julia and didn't give up when she resisted his initial efforts.
Aunt Dee was such a warm lady. She was so welcoming and gentle. I thought her character was one of the best in the book!
My favorite scenes were the ones where Julia was exploring her faith. I loved how Susan portrayed the contrast between Thoreau's Walden and the comfort found in the Bible. I love how she made Julia's reasonings feel very reasonable, and I loved the revelations about how Julia had been so opposed to religion.
As in Libby's Lighthouse, I loved the setting and aesthetic of the book. It was just so calming! The beautiful prose also contributed to the idyllic, peaceful feel of the story.
Overall, I enjoyed this sweet story. It was a calming, sweet, quick read that I think many readers would enjoy!
I received an advance copy of this book. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.
To gain her inheritance, Julia must spend time with her late grandmother's dear friend on Sister Island. Julia is left lonely and confused by this matter and does not really want to be away from the city and all of its bustle. However, as Julia submits to the requirements and meets Aunt Dee and her son William, the island itself and its ever-changing beauty, Julia realizes this summer may not be so bad after all.
Edmund, who is a little bit older than Julia, has had a broken heart and intends to remain single. Yet, Julia's beauty and artistic way of looking at life catches his heart. Edmund loves his job as a lightkeeper, but he does have bouts of pleurisy that plague him from time to time. His ex-fiancé could not deal with either his ill health or the isolation of the island. So, Edmund is a bit hesitant to give his heart away. In fact, he and Julia do not even share the same faith, so he tries extra hard to protect his heart.
Even though Julia and Edmund see things differently, Julia sees how at peace Edmund is. Could her late father be wrong about the beliefs he instilled in her? If that is so, then Julia has been looking at nature all wrong. This was a tale of budding romance, but also Julia's faith quest to find the One who loves her unconditionally.
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
Julia’s Joy is a wonderful historical fiction novel set in the Gilded Age, on the Thousand Islands. I’m a sucker for a good lighthouse romance and this one is just that.
I’ve enjoyed this series about the Gilded Age and this set of islands. They’re each unique. Before this series, I hadn’t read much about the Islands. But now I’m enamoured with them and would love to visit. Though I’m sure I’d be disappointed to not find them exactly as they were in the Gilded Age.
Julia doesn’t want to be on the island. Her grandmother is forcing her to though. Or rather her grandmother’s will. In order to claim her inheritance she just travels to and stays on the island. Can she do it? Can she leave the hustle and bustle and embrace the simple and quieter life on the island?
Enter our cranky but handsome lighthouse keeper William. He’s had a hard life. He has pleurisy. And he’s determined to not find love. But can he be friends with Julia?
Aunt Dee is a favorite with her gentle words of wisdom. She also points Julia to faith. This is very much a faith-filled and centred novel and I couldn’t love it more!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
Christian Historical Romance books are a favorite genre of mine. Julia's Joy by Susan G. Mathis is Book 2 in the Love at a Lighthouse series. I read book 1 in this series and was excited to read this book also.
WOW, the storyline in this book is intriguing from the first chapter. Julia Collins and William Dodge are the 2 main characters in this book. Julia has come to Sister Island as instructed by her Grandmother's will. Julia thinks she will receive her inherientence and go back home to regular life. She wasn't anticipating the peace and tranquilty the Island provides and the faith of the people living on the Island. William is the LightKeeper for the Island and she suddenly has interest in. William was in a couple of relationships in the past that has left him with a Hardened heart and isn't interested in a new relationship. He also has health issues and thinks no one would love him again. I really LOVE how Julia has certain intentions when arriving on the Island, but God truly did a work on her heart throughoutthe book. I felt Julia was a great character as I got to know her and watching her grow. William is an amazing character and he helped Julia realize the simple life is a good life. The book has Faith, History, LOVE and a GREAT storyline! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Historical Romance! WONDERFUL BOOK!
Julia’s Joy by Susan G. Mathis is a Christian Historical Romance and the second book in the Love at a Lighthouse series. It tells the story of Julia Collins reluctantly coming to Sister Island due to her grandmother’s will. She simply wanted to claim her inheritance from her grandmother and move on to new things.
He experiences the peaceful, faith-filled tranquility of the island and gets to know William Dodge, the lighthouse keeper. Suffering from pleurisy and the betrayal of his ex-fiancee, he unexpectedly finds himself drawn to Julia. I love how the author developed this book’s characters and storyline. The detailed descriptions of Julia creating works of art and more kept me reading.
The author’s inclusion of William’s mother and the detailed descriptions of the scenery, especially the island, drew me in and kept me reading.
While you could read this book on its own, I recommend reading the series in order for the best experience.
So, if you enjoy Christian Historical Romances, check out Julia’s Joy by Susan G. Mathis.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
A beautiful story of a young woman who finds herself on a journey where faith is presented to her. For a long time she has not believed in God. When she goes to Sister Island she finds peace, beauty and the beginning of feeling God’s love. Her ability as an artist is well described as the paintings come to life. Set against the backdrop of a lighthouse and the sea, you can feel the hope that springs forth. I love lighthouses and how they remind me of a hope and light that guides you to safety.
William has had health issues and is still hurt from his fiancée who left him when she couldn’t handle his illness. His deep faith is very prominent and I like how he shares it with Julia. Spending time together they start to grow closer. Will Julia find peace on the island?
This has been a great story that captures a faith journey where faith is discovered and letting go of the past and hope for a bright future.
“Sometimes, God’s signs are subtle, like a whisper in the wind. Or a gentle touch. Or a song. You just have to realize Who is talking and be still enough to hear Him.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
There is so much vivid imagery in this story! The author really paints a picture with her words. She has a gift! You know just what the sky looks like, the sunset, the water and everything in nature. The feelings of the characters and tenseness of the moments are all beautifully expressed. When Julia is told she has to spend a summer on a lighthouse island as part of the requirements in her granny's will, she feels it's a prison sentence! However, as the days pass by, she grows to love the place and its inhabitants. William and his mother show her the love and the faith that she craves. She discovers a faith she has never experienced growing up. William who was treated recklessly by his ex-fiancée finds a different woman in Julia. He enjoys sharing his faith with her and loves seeing her blossom on the island. Could she possibly want to stay? He's just a humble lightkeeper but he yearns to have her by his side. Julia is used to the big city though and he can't give her fancy things. William's mother was a sweet, caring woman and added a lot to the story.
Julia’s Joy by Susan G Mathis is the second book in the Love at a Lighthouse series. While this is part of a series, this is a great stand alone story with different characters. The characters are strong, caring people who help Julia following the death of her grandmother.
This is an enjoyable Christian historical story to read. I enjoy the parts of the story that tell of the obligations and responsibilities the lighthouse keeper has. I enjoyed how William’s mother has helpful information for Julia. It is interesting to read how the William and his mother received the supplies they needed and what they did during the winter season. I appreciate the feelings Julia has to the son of her mother’s friend and the life she had with her parents. It’s easy to understand how she would feel about that time in her life.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book, this is my honest review.
This novel shares a tender story set around a lighthouse on a remote small island in the St. Lawrence River between the US and Canada during the Gilded Age. The tale develops the themes of family and overcoming the past and also showcases a journey of coming to faith. The realistic characters make you care about what happens to them as you observe their challenges and their growth. The slow-paced plot allows you time to savor the experience. You feel like you are actually on Sister Island watching the events unfold and seeing the sights. We learn much about what life was like there in that day. The author throws in some surprises along the way too, which makes reading the book even more fun. This fictional account also includes some good advice about marriage. The concepts contained in the book could make good discussion prompters. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Julia’s Joy is a lovely inspirational journey of her life through the rough and calm times just, like the St. Lawrence river surrounding Sister Island. The Dodge family faith and loving ways gave Julia questions about their faith as her parents views were different. The dimensional dialogues, scenes, and emotions brought this story to life in every way from the dangers a lighthouse keeper could find on the river to the peaceful and beauty of God’s creation surrounding them. Mathis penned a gentle message of faith filled with peace, hope and joy that only God could provide to one’s life.
“Faith served as a guiding light, illuminating the path toward understanding, compassion and shared values.”
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit and Wild Heart Books. I have expressed my own thoughts.
Julia's Joy (Love at a Lighthouse Book 2) by Susan G Mathis is very different from the first book in the series. Julia Collins has no desire to be on Sister Island. While she admires the beauty of the lighthouse it is a shallow interest at best that she takes in the beginning. She seemed to be a selfish creature out to get her inheritance from her late grandmother, not one who had much depth of character. William Dodge, lightkeeper of Sister Island, is a kinder character but one with struggles and secrets of his own. How could these two become friends, not to mention perhaps more to each other? I couldn’t see it in the beginning. But God!
This faith-based story has character growth, changed perspectives and hope for the future, and love. An interesting and enjoyable story. It was a pleasure to see the evidence of God’s work in the characters’ lives.
I loved the first book from the Love at a Lighthouse series, Libby's Lighthouse, and was excited to get my hands on the second installment, Julia's Joy. I really enjoyed reading Julia's tale and getting to know her. It was full of intrigue, love, and faith. I felt like I was right there with her and experiencing the story with her. I had to keep reading until I was completely finished in one sitting.
I am going to give Julia's Joy five stars. I believe those who love to read clean Historical Romance will not want miss out on this one. I am eagerly awaiting the next book from the Love at a Lighthouse series, Emma's Engagement to find out what happens next.
I received a paperback copy of Susan G Mathis' Julia's Joy from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Even in the face of adversity, there’s a song waiting to be played.
How far would you move to gain a substantial inheritance? For Julia Collins, she had to spend a summer at Sister Island Lighthouse per her late grandmother. Imagine, nothing but water all around you when you are used to spending time with friends and shopping.
Lighthouse keeper William Dodge lives there with his mother, having inherited the job from his father. He loves it there. Will he be able to share his appreciation for all the beauty around them with Julia? Can she break free from the shackles of the past that have defined her for so long?
An early copy of Love at a Lighthouse Book 2 was received through Wild Heart Books and BookFunnel. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.
What a delightful story. I love Susan’s Gilded Age Lighthouse series. The setting feels so real. The historical tidbits sprinkled throughout kept me grounded in the time period as I turned the pages. Julia’s losses were so relatable, as were William’s. I loved watching them discover their preconceived ideas were wrong. For William, it was not all women are like his ex-fiancée. While Julia discovered that faith can be beautiful. Susan has brought some surprise plot twists that connect the stories in the Lighthouse series in an unexpected way. And her message of faith seamlessly weaves through the story. Can’t wait to read more if Susan’s stories.
Julia arrives at Sister Island due to her grandmother’s stipulation in her will. As she explores her surroundings and experiences the peace of the island and gets to know the light keeper William, she realizes that what she first thought as a boring experience turns into something she treasures the most. I was captivated from the very first page of this novel and loved how all of these novels have a common thread of people who are related. I traveled many years ago through this area on the way to Canada and was amazed at all the tiny islands and how beautiful the area is. R. Fody Oct.29, 2024
I enjoyed this story. I liked how Julia learned to find joy on the island and she found joy in the Lord. I also liked the romance between William and Julia and how William didn’t give up on sharing his faith with Julia even when she didn’t want to believe. I also liked that William found a way to let go of his past hurt and open his heart up to Julia who was different from his previous fiancé. I liked the setting of this story and the characters and I liked seeing them grow in their faith as they went through their different challenges.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
I am thoroughly enjoying this lighthouse series by Susan G. Mathis. The author does a wonderful job of showing the heroine's emotional and spiritual growth as she navigates an unexpected summer secluded on an island with limited contact from the outside world.
Mathis provides a backdrop to showcase God's unconditional love for us. I loved the tie-in to the first book in the series. This is a series you won't want to miss.
~While this book was provided for free, I was under no obligation for a favorable review. (2024)
Julia's Joy by Susan G Mathis kept me turning the pages. This is a clean read. This is book two of the "Love At A Lighthouse" series but can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. In this book, Julia finds love where she is forced to be because of her grandmother's will. She isn't happy at all at first and not only does she find love, she also finds God and his love. This story is based on some actual history. The ending is predictable with a little bit of a surprise tucked in. I received a complimentary copy from the author and Celebrate Lit and these opinions are my own.
The story is filled with learning, unfamiliar places, surprises, and some twists you won't see coming. I loved how Julia grew as a Christian with the help of Aunt Dee and William. Her life was enriched more than she could hope for. I enjoyed the lighthouse setting.
The ending wrapped everything nicely and the whole story came together in an inspirational and heartwarming way. The characters are relatable and had lots of layers to them. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy from the author; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
Set in the Thousand Islands, I found myself immersed in the joy, the solitude versus loneliness, the stark beauty of landscape and seascape, even the adventure and danger lighthouse keepers commit to in rescuing those in troubled waters. A budding romance, in depth research in a fascinating setting, and a very real faith journey make Julia’s Joy a unique book, one I’m so glad to have read. This is Book Two in the Love at a Lighthouse series, but I read and enjoyed it as a standalone. The book was a gift from the author. I was under no obligation to review.
This is book 2 in Mathis’ series on love and lighthouses along the St Lawrence River. The author’s writing style is overwhelmingly lush and poetical – even storms end up sounding wonderful. The characters are interesting to get to know, and Julia’s journey to faith in God is handled well. If you enjoy love stories set in a lighthouse, you’ll want to check this one out.
