The Mastermind is the fifth book of Alessandra Coco’s series The Legend of the Winged People, and it builds the tension to its highest point yet. Old enemies have returned, but new ones have appeared with greater firepower. Choices must be made that will have far-reaching consequences.

Warning: There will be possible spoilers to earlier books in this series.

After a near-disastrous choice in The Five Seals, Pamela (Pameluna) Kendall has made a new decision that promises to change many lives. Leaving the friends who rescued her from the clutches of the usurper Zalarkas, Pameluna returns to the mansion where her people (the Shikazi Karaka) are now threatened by a mysterious organization bringing high-powered weapons of destruction. Her goal - to retrieve the pendants that Zalarkas had collected by force from their original wearers. Pendants that could be the seals needed to unlock a secret location.

Right behind Pam is David Thompson, the young man who was dragged into the adventure back on the Isle of Crete weeks before. A young man who must now step up and play the role of Lantas Thurion, believed by the Shikazi to be some sort of savior known as “The Golden Haired Boy.” But can this self-described “klutz” pull off the ruse?

Meanwhile Victor and Mary Anne, along with their companions, will need to outwit the most dangerous henchmen that Phllip Bradshaw, head of The Organization, can throw at them. At stake is not only the safety of Pam and David, but of the Thompson family. But behind it all is a shadowy, sinister Mastermind - whose revelation at the end will change everything.

I had been eagerly awaiting this book since reading The Five Seals, and it did not disappoint. Pam is coming into her full powers as not just a Shikazi but the surviving princess of her people. But this is also taking her away from David, the first boy she has ever had feelings for. However, her mind is made up about who and what she is, and her determination fuels her growth. David, too, is growing into more than he had been at the beginning of their adventure, but he still doubts himself. There is even time for what could be one, final moment of affection between the two before the end.

The tenor of this book changes rapidly, with death and destruction becoming a major plot element as the minions of The Mastermind seek to acquire the seals for their leader’s own purposes. There are scenes of horror and carnage, all presented in excruciating detail by Coco, but there are also scenes of heroism and tenderness that offset the darkness. While the ending is foreboding, there are also hints that changes in the balance of power are not far away.

The book is action packed and adventurous. The Odyssey of Pam and David is perilous. David has reunited with Pam but he lose her again, Pam is torn between finding her identity and saving Shikazi Karaka. Zalarkas's mansion is too dangerous and unthinkable things happens in this book.

Secrets from the past encapsulates. They are shocking and heartbreaking. The mystery of Medallions and lost city continues. Pam’s and David bond is good. There are still things that Pam is oblivion to. The book has unexpected twists and turns. The ending was so unpredictable. Will Pam and David be able to solve the mystery of five seals? Can’t wait to read next book in series.
