Fresh from saving the Realm of Upper Down, Princess Abigone leaves home to be trained as a Maker.
Where once schools for young Masters and Makers were found in every province of the fallen Elestian Empire, only one such school now exists - in Klef Mordain, the City of Secrets.
The greatest port of the Elestian Empire, now governed by a shadowy and secretive cabal – where criminals are publically executed without trial or right of appeal – Klef Mordain is a city on the brink of civil war.
Divided between those who wish to join the new Sanctian Empire, and those who wish to preserve Klef Mordain’s independence at any price, Abigone finds herself caught in the middle of a fierce struggle to control the future.

About Me
I love deserts, which is too bad as I live in Scotland, but the mountains, glens and lochs more than make up for it. My other love is Greek Tragedy, especially Euripides, and I also read history, science, fantasy, and pretty much anything about the Beatles…

ARC Review: I've mentioned before how much I love the books that Christopher Mitchell writes and I'll say it again. I really loved this story and I wasn't ready for it to end.
Princess Abigone, accompanied by her entourage, has traveled to the city of Klef Mordain to study and be trained in her Maker gift. Within the first few pages we learn just what kind of place this city is. We also soon learn why there is so much secrecy surrounding the boy's school for Masters and the girl's school for Makers. There are quite a few characters that the story follows, each involved in some way in the many levels of this story. Some time is spent in the schools while the students learn to use their gifts, and the range of personalities are typical of those found any junior high or high school. The background political machinations affect all of the characters. Tension builds as the story develops and eventually bring us to a jaw dropping story's conclusion.
Although I missed several of the characters we met in the first book of the series, I liked many of the new characters introduced in this book. (Some are annoying hangers-on.) I really loved how individual each of the characters are. Each one feels like someone I might know or have met, or someone I would want to get to know, or someone you want to avoid (ahem). As with the first book in the series, we still have several characters whose morals are a darker shade of grey and beyond, blindly hiding behind their ambitions. The story itself has a grimdark feel to it with smattering of clean romance. I lost count of the number of times I said "holy cow" (or other expletives) while reading this book. This was definitely an edge-of-the-seat kind of the book. I lost several hours of sleep in order to keep reading this story and it was worth it. I highly recommend this series and will anxiously await the next installment. Very well done, indeed!
So good. But to be honest I wasn't sure if I'd get into this book. For Christopher Mitchell this is the second book in the series and the start of a new series is always going to be compared to his last. Having said that... I'm really enjoying this series, this book in particular has Abigone and Denny, being two of the main characters, really evolving who they are and what they bring into the series. One wonders at the end how will the series evolve. One thing we never know with Christopher's books is the end. It's unpredictable! Often one can predict or at least try but here it's unforeseeable. The friendship between Abigone and Denny is something I'm looking forward to exploring and where their lives lead to. I cannot imagine where the next book will trave us!!
This was another fantastic book written by Mitchell. The book starts with tense moments and the story keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. I was not entirely excited about Abigone having her own book not knowing what the direction would be and I am so happy I was wrong. The world was expanded and the main characters developed. I daresay Kilbride would be very proud of Abigone and her growth as a person and a Maker. Who knows where the next book will lead our young friends but I cannot wait to find out!! Highly recommended
Book 2 of the new Masters and Makers series is yer another tour de force by Christopher Mitchell who just goes from strength to strength. The characters are developing nicely in a story line that twists and turns like tangled string. If you're a fantasy fan I strongly recommend Christopher Mitchell's books, the Magelands series - currently 18 books and Masters and Makers - 2 books so far, but more to follow.
An exciting new book. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
For those who have already read Christopher’s books. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this new series after loving Christopher’s previous books and worlds. However I enjoyed book one of Masters and Makers, and this second book in the series is even better in my opinion.
