Martha joins forces with Stashu, a young Polish acrobat, to get rid of her ventriloquist father's dummy, a pretty wooden doll named Iris, when it appears that the mysteriously powerful Iris is replacing Martha in her father's life.
I loved it, right up to the end! Slepian captured the Vaudeville setting beautifully. The characters were utterly engaging. My problem is the end, which I didn't understand. I don't mean the "postscript" about what the characters did after the end of this story, I mean the climax and resolution. It was unclear, left a lot of loose ends, and didn't seem to resolve anything. I am so sad about that, because most of the book was fascinating and a great read!
***SPOILERS*** 1. I thought this was a cute book, but lacked depth. I think it's perfect for young readers. 2. I'm glad that Martha and her dad stayed in that town and made friends with Rosie. 3. So Iris is still a thing, but Martha just stood up for herself? I hope the dad treats her well now. 4. Quote I loved: "The scariest stories are real ones with real people in the grip of bad feelings." 5. Imma smack Martha's dad.
