As the sun began to set over the shimmering waters of the marina, excitement filled the air for the season finale of the popular show The Point. Friends, fans, and cast members gathered eagerly, their laughter and chatter echoing across the docks. The atmosphere was vibrant with anticipation as everyone looked forward to the night's festivities and the thrilling conclusion of the season's storyline.

However, unbeknownst to them, the evening was about to take a dark and unexpected turn. Tensions simmering beneath the surface of their seemingly perfect relationships began to rise. As the celebration progressed, buried secrets emerged, leading to disbelief and betrayal. The bonds of friendship were tested in ways they could never have imagined as accusations flew and trust crumbled. That fateful night would forever change their lives, marked by intrigue, deception, and the haunting memory of a life lost.

The Project was initially anticipated to be an exciting and enjoyable endeavor, showcasing a star-studded cast that created much buzz and excitement. Drawing inspiration from popular shows like Riverdale and Cruel Summer, the series featured Mason Brooks in the leading role, where his charisma and talent were expected to captivate viewers. Callie Montague was cast as his co-star, bringing her unique flair and on-screen presence to the duo. Joining them were Will Symmons, known for his charm, Maya Lashae, who had a reputation for her powerful performances, and Tim McCafferty, whose humor brought fun to the group. Rounding out the cast was the older character, Bobby Palmer, a seasoned actor who added depth and wisdom to the ensemble.

However, the excitement surrounding the Project soon turned into a nightmare. Some members would face tragic fates, resulting in devastating losses, while others would find themselves struggling for survival. Little did any of the cast know that in the next couple of days, some would be dead, some would be hanging on for their lives, and the others would be fighting to stay alive.

Metaville immerses you in a richly woven tapestry of intriguing characters grappling with their demons. As you navigate their tumultuous lives, you'll be drawn into a whirlwind of emotions filled with heartache over alcohol addiction, struggles with drug use, and the complexities of love gone wrong. The atmosphere thickens with tension as trust issues begin to unravel their relationships. When you think you have the narrative figured out, tragedy strikes—a beloved member of their tight-knit group is found dead. With a masterful twist, the murderer's identity will leave you utterly astonished, defying all your expectations until the last page.

Charlotte Brough has created an enchanting novel that grips you from the first page and doesn't let go until the last. The story is infused with rich, vibrant characters—Callie, Mason, and Bobby—who feel incredibly real and relatable. You'll find yourself reflecting on their stories and the emotions they evoke, making this book a truly memorable literary experience.

I wholeheartedly recommend Metaville; it has so much potential! I'm excited about Brough's promising future, so I confidently give it a five-star review.

Highly enjoyed this one! Metaville is like the perfect love letter to all the teen dramas I watched growing up. It perfectly delivers on its promise of being a blend of "I Know What You did Last Summer" and "Riverdale." It felt like I was reading rather than watching a season of "Pretty Little Liars." It was wonderfully messy, dramatic, and the twist at the end was perfect. I could predict part of it, but when the whole truth was revealed, I was shook! All in all, this was definitely worth the read, and I will be adding it to my personal collection for sure.

Metaville is a new adult tale set in Canada from four different viewpoints: Mason’s, Maya’s, Callie’s and Will’s, actors from a teen television show called The Point, now in its second series, following the mysterious disappearance of Bobby, one of their co-stars. The book is described by the author as Riverdale meets I Know What You Did Last Summer, neither of which mean anything to me (heard of the latter, but never seen it; the former, I understand, is an American TV series shown on Netflix in the USA, Australia and here in the UK, but I haven't watched it, so I’ll take her word for it). Anyway, on its own, Metaville is an intriguing mystery story and whodunit.

Each chapter chops and changes between the characters, telling us how they think and behave. Mason is a good-looking, drug-addicted alcoholic, in and out of rehab and well past his sell-by date as a teenager, but a household name and star of the show nonetheless; Callie is in love with Mason, but has somehow become embroiled with the much older, also messed-up Bobby; Maya has her sights set on becoming a star in other shows and finally, British actor Will is in his first acting role. Mason and Callie appear to be the main protagonists, as focus is given to Mason’s addiction issues and living in the shadow of his twin sister Shauna, a Hollywood movie star, and Callie’s inner struggles around her feelings for Mason, but all four actors are affected by someone sending them sinister messages following Bobby’s disappearance, making for a tense and edgy drama. Where is Bobby and who is taunting them in this disturbing way?

It could be argued that the chapter format is a bit confusing, but that’s not a problem if you give yourself time to read it and concentrate on the action; there are necessary flashbacks to the time before Bobby disappeared, which are important to the plot. If I do have a criticism, I would say that it is rather a long read, but an absorbing one.

I've never been a YA reader, outside of my obligatory Harry Potter phase in the early 2000s, but the CW-esque teen drama theme of "Metaville," an upcoming whodunit piqued my interest.

My sister convinced me to give Riverdale a go several years ago and I found the over-the-top vaguely supernatural storylines goofy yet oddly watchable. For reference: there is a season-long arc where Archie and company unravel the mystery of "The Gargoyle King," who is unmasked as different culprits at least 3 or 4 times. Also, a gangster who owns a restaurant is assassinated. His name was Papa Poutine. It was NOT played with any levity.

Metaville doesn't lean into the unbelievable like many of its inspirations. It is rather subdued. The murder mystery is a series of unlikely but theoretically possible events. It is also nowhere near as gory as I Know What You Did Last Summer, the other work its blurb compares it to. With the characters being Gen Z workers in a vapid industry, there are many scenes devoted to checking Instagram, so there are some lulls in the action. However, I found the book as a whole to be very readable and I was interested to see who was behind the mask. I got it wrong though. ):

Overall, I would personally rank it a 3 star read but I am bumping it up a star with the cognizance I am reading way out of genre. I think YA fans, particularly twenty-somethings who want something with a little edge, should enjoy Metaville.

As always, I picked this up on Booksirens for free as an Advance Review Copy. My opinion is unbiased and uninfluenced.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I gave this book a 3.5 but rounded up.

𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦 is a cross between 𝘐 𝘒𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘋𝘪𝘥 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘚𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳 and 𝘙𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘦 and would actually make a really good Netflix limited series.

𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦 is a multi-POV (and I definitely mean MULTI) thriller that surrounds the cast of the series 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 .

Maya, Will, Mason and Callie's coworker Bobby disappears one night and they were the last to see him. When shooting resumes of their show, a series of unfortunate events happen that have the costars questioning if someone knows what REALLY happened the night of Bobby's disappearance.

So, this book is a bit of a slowburn but in my opinion would make a really great series.

I enjoyed the writing style and the multiple POVs, but it easy to forget who is who. There are a bit of few characters and it is easy to get lost, so if you aren't a fan of more than 2 POVs this isn't for you; however, the multiple POVs does work because you get a better idea of what is really happening in the book.

It was a little predictable in what happen, although it didn't go the way I actually thought it may have.

Overall, it is amazingly written and I would love to see this as a series.

Must Read Murder Mystery

Bobby Palmer went missing and is presumed dead. A Hollywood cast and crew last went out on a drinking binge where Bobby mysteriously disappeared. The timeline for this book goes in reverse chronological order and switches back and forth narration between the characters which can make the book seem more confusing. Metaville is like Riverdale.  Everytime you think you know who killed Bobby Palmer, the scenario changes and it could be someone completely different.

As the book goes on, the reader learns more about Bobby Palmer - that he was a father with numerous children, that he was romantically involved with a young woman named Callie, that he had anger issues, some people did not like Bobby at all and that Bobby was known to pick fights. Once you hear each character's position, you think they could have been the one. Will struck Bobby. Mason also got into a scuffle in which Bobby hit his head and fell into the ocean. It could have been Maya. It could have been Shauna. Callie was pregnant with Bobby when he went missing, and had an abortion - then it wasn't an abortion, it was a miscarriage. Callie got involved with Mason. Was it Callie? I'm not going to spoil it. The book is like Clue. The ending is worth the read.

Quick, captivating mystery

The author compares this book to Riverdale, and as a big fan of Riverdale (particularly seasons 1 and 2), I thoroughly enjoyed Metaville!

The characters are adult actors who are, for the most part, playing teenagers and the way the author compares their experiences of adulthood to the teenage lives of their characters drew me in at the start.

This book does not shy away from issues facing celebrities (including child actors) and the book includes significant themes of drug / alcohol abuse / loneliness.

I was captivated by the main mystery storyline throughout, but particularly liked the way the characters were developed internally, and how each character was perceived by others in the different points of view.

I don't often read books of this genre, but the premise and cover (as well as the comparison to Riverdale) intrigued and persuaded me to have a go!

For fans of Riverdale (and anyone else interested), this book gets a glowing recommendation and a five star rating!

Metaville by Charlotte Brough is described as ‘Riverdale' meets 'I Know What You Did Last Summer.’ I’ve never heard of either so I can’t make any comment on whether it is or it isn’t. Wat I can say that this is a gripping thriller from start to finish.
Four twenty-something actors – Mason, Callie, Maya and Will are back on the set on Vancouver Island as season 2 of the hit teen drama ‘The Point’ is in production. But a black cloud is hanging over the set due to the disappearance months earlier of Bobby Palmer another cast member.
The four begin to receive threatening messages and it’s obvious whomever is sending them knows the actors very well, and also knows what happened the night Bobby disappeared. As the unknown person ups the ante, it becomes a matter of life and death.
This is an excellent thriller with an explosive ending and I couldn’t stop reading until the last page. My only complaint, and this is a minor one, was that I found the multiple points of view confusing occasionally. More so at the beginning until I got to know the characters.

Metaville follows the cast of "The Point" a teen drama show starting the shoot for their second season. However, the new season is overshadowed by the disappearance/assumed death of co-star Bobby just after the first season wrapped filming.

This story truly plays up the meta factor as we jump between cast members Will, Mason, Maya, and Callie as they deal with the loss of Bobby - and they each find themselves under personal threat for the parts they may have played in his disappearance.

I genuinely had no idea how Bobby's story was going to play out and can honestly say that when the main cast starts to figure out who has been finding ways to personally attack, threaten, or otherwise traumatize each of them, the story gets CRAZY.

Interesting story and plot. Definitely felt lukewarm bits and pieces of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Riverdale.

I kept wanting to know who it was throughout the book that was threatening and hurting the core 4. I had a feeling about one person and was right, but didn’t except who the second was, or why they did what they did. It seemed like maybe E was always pretty crazy and talked the other into it a bit more, based on info given later. Sad that so many people were hurt in one way or another.

Not nearly as gory as I thought it would be, but still doesn’t quite hold back on the violence. Definitely and interesting read for anyone that likes thrillers, Riverdale and IKWYDLA.

In Charlotte Brough’s Metaville, twenty-something actors are caught up in a real-life nightmare to rival the drama of their hit TV show The Point.

Five months ago, one of the actors in the show disappeared, and his co-stars have been haunted by the secrets they have been keeping ever since. Now someone is sending them messages, threatening to expose what they want to keep hidden. Each character must figure out who they can trust as their lives unravel.

Accurately described as a cross between Riverdale and I Know What You Did Last Summer, this is a chaotic read with bonkers plot twists; in short, it is a lot of fun (if not a little ridiculous).

Most of the storylines are unbelievable (a true homage to Riverdale), but it is an enjoyable fast-paced read. The characters are a mess but likable, especially the tragic Mason. The former child star with addiction and alcohol issues is broken but well-intentioned, and his storyline is quite heartbreaking for a book with so much campiness. For as over-the-top as this book is, it is not lighthearted.

Entertaining and fun, this would make a good choice for a vacation read.

This book is described as YA, having Riverdale, and I Know What You Did Last Summer vibes.
I have never seen Riverdale, and I quite enjoyed the movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer.
I enjoyed reading this book. Some say it was unbelievable at times, and to that, I say... it's a book about 20 somethings in the hollywood spotlight and the swcrets they keep . Nothing suprises me there.
The ending and who dunnit.... shocked me. Not who I thought it was.

Thank you to BookSirens for this ARC. 2.5 stars rounded up. I found it a little hard to read with so many different perspective shifts within chapters, and I didn't really get a strong sense of who each character was. I thought about not finishing, but decided to persevere. The plot was fine, if predictable. If the framing target (this is not a spoiler) had actually dunnit, I think I would have liked it a lot more. That intrigued me, seemed clever and unexpected.

I really enjoyed this fast paced thriller. It kept me guessing until the end. I could see it playing out in my mind like an actual movie. My only constructive criticism is the multiple points of view did get confusing at times. If written in third person it may have been easier to follow at times.

*Metaville* follows a group of twenty-something actors entangled in a real-life nightmare that rivals the drama of their hit TV show, *The Point*. When one of their co-stars mysteriously disappears, the remaining actors are tormented by the secrets they have been keeping. As anonymous messages threaten to expose their hidden truths, each character must navigate a web of deception and trust, leading to a suspenseful and thrilling journey.

Charlotte Brough's *Metaville* delivers a gripping and fast-paced story that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The novel's premise, reminiscent of *Riverdale* and *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, is both intriguing and engaging. The characters are well-drawn, and their personal struggles add depth to the narrative. The mystery surrounding the disappearance and the ensuing suspense are skillfully woven, creating plenty of twists and turns that maintain a high level of excitement throughout.

The book's easy readability and swift pace make it an enjoyable read, perfect for those who love thrillers with a touch of drama. While some plot points might be predictable, the overall execution and the constant sense of tension more than make up for it. *Metaville* is a satisfying read that successfully combines elements of mystery, suspense, and drama.

Great mystery with lots of suspense.

Fans of the show Riverdale will enjoy this mystery, thriller, Metaville. The teenaged cast of the popular TV show “The Point” are shooting the season two when they are drawn into an emotional rollercoaster, because one of the older cast members, Bobby Palmer, disappears. The book alternates between the four other teenaged actors and their perspectives, which makes it more interesting. Mason and Callie, the two main characters who are trying to hide their crushes on each other. As well as the high maintenance Maya and the popular Brit boy, Will. Each one of the cast members has something to hide and secrets about Bobby that they are not willing to disclose. But when someone throws a mannequin off the roof wearing Bobby’s jacket, and the friends feel like they are being stalked and targeted, they start to wonder which one of them is next. Great mystery with lots of suspense.

Metaville follows a group of young actors from a hit teen show who get caught up in the mystery of their missing co-star, Bobby. The story jumps between different characters' points of view, which makes things feel a bit chaotic at times—but it also adds layers to the mystery and keeps you guessing.

I liked how each character had their own secrets and issues, and the author slowly reveals more about what really happened the night Bobby disappeared. Just when you think you know who’s guilty, something new comes up. It’s part murder mystery, part behind-the-scenes drama, with a vibe kind of like Riverdale or I Know What You Did Last Summer.

If you enjoy suspense, teen drama, and messy relationships, this is definitely worth a read. The ending is satisfying and keeps you thinking.

Four young stars of a highly successful television drama called The Point find themselves in a real-life thriller as they arrive to shoot their second season in Vancouver Island. For the cast and crew, but particularly actors Mason, Callie, Maya, and Will, a pall hangs over the resumption of work from a real life (meta-)cliff-hanger: the disappearance and presumed death of fellow cast member, Bobby Palmer.

It's been five months since that tragedy occurred at a cast and crew party but uncertainty remains in that no one knows what happened to Bobby's corpse. There's even a remote possibility he's still alive. The sombreness gets broken by the discovery of Bobby's blood-spattered jacket on what appears to be a dead man on a flagpole. It's the same jacket Bobby was wearing the night he went missing, but its current wearer is merely a mannequin.

This sets off a series of strange and menacing incidents that incite rifts and distrust in this otherwise tight group of partying youth as they escalate. From taunting and accusing text messages to drugging, near accidents, and even an explosion with casualties. The existential threats compel the producers to assign individual security details to each of the show's stars whose anxiety is exacerbated by the variations in their interpersonal relationships. Most of these seem to pivot on Mason Brookes and his substance abuse as the other three are tamer.

With one exception, the story is told from alternating points-of-view of the four stars. Each speaks or writes in the present tense, taking turns presenting the story as it happens. Each also flashes back in past tense to the night Bobby died five months earlier and its aftermath. in this ensemble manner the targeted four gradually reveal information they conspired to keep within the group.

But there are facts or pieces each individual or subset knows distinctly about Bobby's demise and what was going on at the party prior to it. The gaps make them wonder if one of them betrayed the others to tell someone else, or if not, whether someone witnessed it all. Thus there are plenty of candidates for antagonist, including each other, enough to keep the mystery alive to the end in this twist-filled plot.

While each main character has a voice, they share a consistent level of youthful superficiality as a large portion of the novel is dialogue exchanges between them. There's a Charlie Brownish dearth of mature adult wisdom partaking in the action. Even the undoubtedly older, worldlier bodyguards keep or to the background, or get diverted so their clients can conduct their own sleuthing, taking their own risks on the way to the mystery's resolution.

There is plenty of interior monologue too, consisting of private fretting and speculation about the situation and their interpersonal relationships. They broach serious issues, such as panic attacks, but these aren't explored to great depth. Meaning there's little getting in the way of a light, quick, fun read appropriate for the beach or airplane.

A little more description, particularly about the scenic locales could have added atmosphere and colour to the scenes without hindering the pace. But this thriller should appeal more to younger people and fans of young adult fiction, as the principal characters, while wealthy and successful—or because they're wealthy and successful—with unsupervised access to adult indulgences, behave and think as if they are younger.

Metaville is a thriller told from various POVs.

The Point is a successful teen drama with some crazy twists and turns that has starred a number of twenty-somethings for years. But now, tragedy has struck. Bobby Palmer, one of the more seasoned actors on the show has gone missing. And even though no body has been found, it is presumed that he has died. With all of the actors being very close, having to shoot the scene where he dies in the show will be one of the hardest, yet almost requiring no acting, pieces to pull off.

First you have Mason – he who came off another successful teen drama but is plagued by addiction issues. His complete opposite twin, Shauna, is the golden girl, who works in movies and bails Mason out of the serious issues he finds himself in. Mason is in love with Callie, who plays his love interest, but theirs is a complicated relationship. Added into the mix are regulars Tim, Maya, and Will, who, together with Mason and Callie, know a little about the last night Bobby was seen alive.

When Bobby’s jacket is discovered, the secrets are pushed down a little deeper but as the actors all start getting threatening messages about the truth coming out, they know that someone is out to get them. And that someone seems to know a lot – could it be one of them?

This story is cleverly told using different POVs so that you get to learn much more about the feelings and history of each character. Behind the scenes is very often way more intriguing than the plot line! So, most of these personalities and actions seem to need to be taken with a grain of salt, as, like in Riverdale, they truly hit some bizarre times. Mason’s experiences being the most obvious. It’s like they are a bunch of youngsters playing in an adult world where bad choices are the norm and they are linked because of an incident where not everyone has all the facts (a la I Know What You Did Last Summer).

If you look carefully, you can make a good guess at the ending and how the secret is unveiled but not all is obvious from the beginning and the author manages to weave a great storyline keeping all the guesswork together.

The editing was great and the story was an easy read. The author has a lovely writing style where even when the plot goes skew sometimes, you never feel as though you are pulled out of the world. A great read where you can just switch off and read something for a good “fun” thriller.

Many thanks to Voracious Readers Only for the copy.

Metaville centers on a group of young TV stars who become the target of a stalker shortly after the death of their co-star, the troubled Bobby Palmer.

Various reviews have compared this with TV shows like Riverdale, Gossip Girl, and the OC, and these are probably fair comparisons. I have seen it mentioned that this is like 'I know what you did last summer', but I think that isn't accurate. This is very much a soap opera, and it doesn't have the action beats you'd associate with a slasher. The mystery as well isn't super deep, I found the focus is very much on the extremely messy relationships and personal lives of the main characters. I'd be more inclined to compare it to 'Pretty Little Liars', a popular show in its day which features a similar basic premise to this book.

The book shifts between different perspectives (Mason, Callie, Maya, and Will) as the events play out. I've seen some reviews suggest this was confusing but I was able to follow it fine and in fact the majority of the story took place linearly, so, no problem for me. During Act 3, we also get to see scenes further back in time which shed light on events from those different perspectives.

My critique of it would be that I didn't find the characters particularly likable. I think the author has done a good job of replicating the vacuous and narcissistic character types found in teen dramas.

The downside of that is, as a reader, I found it unpleasant to slip into their point of view. There's a lot of swearing, drugs, hook-up culture, and the characters come across as weak-willed and incompetent. This I felt hurt the mystery factor for me, as the book tries to suggest that one of the four main characters is the traitor. I never bought into the 'whodunnit' because it could not be any of the protagonists. They're too self-absorbed and incompetent.

I'm giving this one 3 stars because I think the writing was pretty solid, with some strong dialogue and character moments. Additionally, the book does a good job of creating the atmosphere of a teen drama; I could see this book getting turned into a script for a TV show. I did wish there was more action, satire, or bite in this story, but I think for a certain type of mystery reader it will find its audience.

Great Book

I borrowed Metaville from the Kindle Unlimited Library and read it using my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

From the moment I started reading, I was engaged as a reader and by how Metaville blurs the lines between a teen drama and a suspenseful thriller. The writer Charlotte Brough does an exceptional job of drawing readers into the intense, often chaotic lives of the 4 key characters - Mason, Callie, Maya, and Will. Each character is layered with intrigue and secrets and complexities that make them feel incredibly real, which only heightened my emotional investment in their fates.

As I ventured further into the twists and turns of the plot, I found myself constantly on edge, wondering who could be trusted and who might be hiding dark intentions as in typical thrillers. But this was intense. The sense of paranoia and unease was palpable, and I felt like I was right there with the characters, unraveling the mystery of Bobby Palmer’s disappearance. Brough’s writing has a way of making the reader feel almost complicit in the secrets that slowly unfold, which adds a unique layer of suspense to the experience.

The tension builds gradually, and just when you think you have everything figured out, another twist pulls the rug out from under you. It’s this unpredictability that kept me flipping digital pages and screeen late into the night. I also appreciated the way the book delves into the psychology of fame and the pressures these young actors face, which adds depth to the narrative beyond just the mystery.

Metaville is a well thought story; and it’s an emotional rollercoaster that plays with your perceptions and keeps you engaged from start to finish. If you are like me someone who is simple and enjoy books that mix youthful drama with dark, suspenseful elements, this one will not disappoint. It’s a gripping, thought-provoking read that will leave you reflecting on the characters and their choices long after you’ve turned the last page.

This contemporary mystery is set in the world of film making. The story is told with differing viewpoints from the four main characters, who are all actors in an ongoing teen/young adult TV drama series set on Vancouver Island, off the western coast of Canada. The plot concerns a veteran actor who has gone missing without trace but the four different viewpoints quickly leave us intriguing clues. I found the first quarter of the book full of pace and energy which kept me turning the pages. The middle section seemed to slip into soap opera mode with rather a lot of scenes where characters are having angst-ridden conversations that demonstrate their fragility and unreliability, but didn't give me much to make me really care about them. However, there were enough red herrings and subtle clues to keep me engaged and turning the pages. The last quarter of the book was rather good with plenty of twists and turns, a dramatic climax and satisfying resolution.

The story itself is well plotted, the writing is accomplished and the book has been edited well. Author Charlotte Brough uses vernacular in her dialogues that her younger audience will appreciate and identify with. This includes the 'f' word a great deal, no doubt in an attempt to chime with the younger audience, but there is no gratuitous sex or violence. One of the characters has alcohol and drug addictions but these are not glamorized – in fact they are shown as weaknesses, to be avoided by sensible people. As a cautionary tale against the pitfalls of fame and fortune this book succeeds very well and sheds light on the somewhat shallow world of 'celebrity'. However, I'm sure it will find a large audience among young adults who enjoy contemporary mysteries and 'who-dunnits'.
