At a young age, Aia Utagawa was scouted as a model, but his real ambition is to become a makeup artist. But, even as the end of high school approaches, it's a dream he hides inside, afraid of stepping outside his prescribed role as a pretty face. Then, one day, he meets Jun, a quiet classmate who hunches because she's ashamed of her face, covered in freckles. He convinces her to enter a school runway fashion contest together--with him doing her makeup. They make an incredible team, with Jun discovering a confidence she never knew she could show and Aia finally learning that, while it may be tough to open yourself up to failing at the one thing you care about, the difficulties can be worth facing.

Oh bless, Bless. This series is just trying so hard and comes off as insane. It’s probably my incredible aversion to style (I typically have to ask my wife to make sure I’m matching), but this series is just so… silly.

The back of book makes this sound as earnest as it is, but neglects that it also covers such bonkers topics as drag queens from 3000AD and a lipstick line based on Japanese festivals.

Plus something that involves either the pancreas or colon, because apparently saying ‘cancer’ would be a bridge too far.

Jun moves forward with her dream, while Aia seems to be mostly cultivating a bunch of rivals to go up against for competition. At least they spend more time together here - Aia absolutely feeds off Jun’s energy.

We get to meet Jun’s mom, who clearly loves her daughter to bits and is supremely proud of her. She’s really vibrant and shows a ton of great support for Jun, while also dropping a revelation on Aia like a bomb.

It’s impossible not to notice Aia’s jealousy in this section and I do wonder if Jun’s plans might not dovetail with the flashback of her parents’ relationship we see at the end of the volume. That section is a little too fast moving to be especially believable and goes for the easiest choices it can make, but its ending is pretty solid, visually.

Having accidentally missed this volume, it had been a while in between them and I had forgotten how dead serious this treats something that is, again, not terribly serious. They’re designing make-up looks and modelling, not doing bomb disposal.

Having Jun and Aia back together really illustrates how much more interesting they are together, although Aia really seems to have taken over the story. His makeup battles are much more the focus and probably for the best.

This is an uneven series, really, but it sure goes after it with gusto. And something pounding its heart this openly, like we were reading a volume of Medalist and the Olympics were on the line, is more enjoyable even if it makes me roll my eyes at the same time.

3 stars - make-up brushes and mascara remain the weapons of choice here and it is doing exactly what it wants to be doing, which I applaud, even as it entertains more by spectacle than virtue of being actually good.

The first part was great! I love their relationship and her mom and the Drag queens but the 2nd part pissed me off bc oya annoys the shit outta me (this manga stresses me more than any other shounen could) also her parents story was so sweet! Sadly my fav character didn't appear at all and my 2nd fav had like 3 pages of screen time (。•́︿•̀。)

It reminds me a lot of Smile Down the Runway; maybe it's a little better. This volume has been more understandable and the climb to who will be the best makeup artist is told well. Very moving the final chapter on the past of Jun's family.
