Fox is a thief with morals—she steals from those who can afford it and only a little at that. She has no choice. Fox and her three closest companions entered into indentured servitude to the Lady, a mysterious noble with widespread political power by questionable means, in order to pay off familial debts. While searching for an easy mark in town, Fox helps a royal bodyguard fend off a would-be assassin’s attack on a prince’s life.

But what started off as protecting the prince out of good conscience has now unwittingly embroiled this thief in a vast world of politics, high stakes, and romance. And though Fox longs to be free of her debts, she must decide if love is its own kind of cage.

3.5 ★— You know when a book is technically fine and competently written, but you just can’t bring yourself to really adore it because of how little it stands out and how many generic romantasy-isms it leans on? That’s how Ember Eternal felt for me.

Chloe Neill is an author I hold in fond regard because of her urban fantasy, vampire-focused series I read as a teen, which is why this release was on my radar in the first place.

The story does a solid job of setting up its world, and I think the opening chapter was a genuine high point. It delivers some action, mystery, and a nice hint of intrigue as it introduces its' heroine, Fox, a woman born indebted and forced to work off what she owes by doing odd jobs with her best friend, who’s stuck in the same predicament.

It lost me a bit once the romance came more into focus, and this is entirely shaped by my own very subjective preferences in romantic subplots, but I have to say it: the dynamic was just too insta-lust-y for my taste. I like a slow burn, and with how quickly the FMC was drawn to the hero and how instantly he reciprocated that attraction, my interest dipped.

The worldbuilding didn’t quite hold my interest either. It felt like generic fantasy kingdom No. 879, and even the major reveals were fairly easy to predict early on.

I did enjoy the side characters, and I ended up liking the gradual secondary romance more than the central one.

The book moves into more interesting territory toward the end, and the newly introduced stakes left me a bit more hopeful that the sequel might offer something stronger. This might be a good pick for readers who want a trope-heavy read with familiar character arcs. Because, like I said, those elements are handled relatively well.

Readers who are deeply entrenched in the genre and looking for something fresher may find themselves a little bored with what this book ultimately brings to the table.

The first third had me really invested, but it slowly lost me until the end 10%.

I liked the characters individually, but found I didn't really care for their romantic story. That was ok, but didn't have me overly concerned for them to actually be together.

There were a few plot points that didn't fit or seemed misplaced, but overall it was interesting and I would pick up the next installment.

From the world Neill has created to the characters, I was immediately pulled into the story of Fox, a thief with a gift to see Anima & Aether. In order to pay off familial debts, she and her friend Wren have spent their lives in indentured servitude to the Lady, a mysterious noble.

We first meet Fox as she and her friend are lifting coin from those who can afford it. It is then that the prince, his carriage and guards appear on the road to the palace keep. Fox spies someone darting in and out using aether and realizes they mean to attack the prince. Abandoning all of her rules, she shouts and goes to the guards’ aid. Nix, the royal bodyguard, works with Fox. They/we quickly learned someone possessed a local to force them to do their bidding using aether. The tale that unfolds grabbed me from the first moment and never let me go.

Fox and Wren are a delight, and from the beginning I was curious about Galen (a knight of the Aether). The author did a fantastic job of fleshing out the world, the king and the gods who abandoned them. The magical system, social classes, and history we glean knowledge of, proved interesting.

The romance was a slow-burning, forbidden romance. I enjoyed the twists, vulnerability and trust that built. The mystery surrounding the attacks also forces Fox to remember her past, and many things are revealed as the battle intensifies. Fox is a heroine you will root for. She is clever, loyal and true.

A fantastic start to this fantasy series with romantic elements. I am looking forward to next novel in the Souls Burn Brightest series. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

*Thoughts*

Ember Eternal is the first installment in author Chloe Neill's Souls Burn Brightest series. This is Chloe Neill's romantasy debut, part political thriller, part slow-simmering romance, all wrapped in a magic system that's as inventive as it is haunting. If you're craving a tale where loyalty is currency, freedom is a thief's gamble, and love burns hotter than forbidden fire, this one's for you. At its core, Ember Eternal thrusts us into the life of Fox, a street-smart thief who's equal parts cunning and cautious.

I absolutely loved every second of this story! I've always enjoyed Chloe Neill's storytelling so I think I'm not super surprised, but this just hit all the right notes for me... even though the burn was slowwwwwww!

I adored Nik and Fox and Wren and Galen! The banter, the action, the swoons .... just give me more!

I did mention the relationship itself is a definite slow burn - minimal action until the last 25% or so but lots of pining and longing and to be honest I didn't mind it here. The evolution of the trust between Nik and Fox was believable and can I just say that I love a guy who is clear in what he wants!

Definitely recommend everyone put this one on their TBR and pre-order ASAP!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing a copy for review!

Thank you TorBooks for the eARC via Netgalley

I have been a fan of Chloe Neill’s books since her Chicagoland Vampire series and this one sounds too good to pass up.

Unfortunately, this one ended up to be a mediocre read for me.

The first few chapters of the book were really interesting as we dive into some of the worldbuilding and the introduction of the characters..however, it slowly got to be an okay read despite me really wanting to love it.

This book is told in the POV of Fox, a thief and bonded servant to The Lady. She and her best friend, Wren, are thieves. Having the unusual ability to see Aether, a magical substance, she unexpectedly saved the life of the newly appointed Western Prince from an assassination. While doing that, she and Wren meet Nik and Galen, bodyguards to the prince. In order to uncover the assassin who escaped, Fox is tasked with helping Nik to find them.

While this story has the tropes I like: secret identity, morally grey heroine, found family, political intrigue, and drama, it felt flat to me. I struggled with the characters given they appear very one dimensional at times - the relationship develops too quickly for my liking and I don’t see the chemistry. It was a lot of tell vs show and the banter that Chloe is known for is substantially missing here! I also did not like how the later half introduces a love triangle (WHYYY?!!).

I do enjoy some parts of the character development - Fox is a determined and independent heroine. She lives to survive day by day and her spunk is clearly seen through this. Her beautiful friendship with Wren, her loyal and spunkie bestie is lovely to see and there is definitely more to her than meets the eye given her murky history. She also has a code of morals that she usually follows such as not stealing from people who can’t afford it. Her code of conduct makes her an interesting heroine, for sure.

I feel that this is also a very character driven story which makes the world building elements present but not fleshed out. It would have been nicer to get some history to Aether and Anima and also the present history of the world. The magic system is unique enough that it would have made things interesting. The information given at times felt disjointed and disconnected and it didn’t make sense when it built into a bigger picture.

Given the tiny cliffhanger, I’m still in abit of an impasse to see if I will pick up the next book.

Overall, this was an okay read as it has all the crucial romantasy elements needed to make this an interesting book but the execution needs more work to make this an awesome read.

Well, this book was amazing and I need the next in the series immediately!

If you’re a fan of S.M. Gaither, Sheila Masterson, Miranda Lyn, Carissa Broadbent, Melissa K. Rhoerich, Stacia Stark, Nicolle May, or Lisette Marshall, then you’ll love this book. Chloe weaves together a tale full of magic, survival, star-crossed love, chosen family, humor, and perseverance. Fox is a breath of stubborn fresh air! She’s smart, sassy, a nimble thief but an honest thief. Think a lady version of Robinhood, sorta. She’s also been a pawn for those who have more wealth and/or power than her…She’s not quick to trust so when she meets Nik and then discovers his true identity she’s none to pleased. And Nik…he’s a knight in shining armor and so much more. This is a SLLLOOOWWW burn but it’s oh so good! I don’t normally enjoy a cinnamon roll MMC, but Nik pulls it off. The ending killed me but I knew things wouldn’t be smooth sailing for them. I honestly hope Catalya meets a horrible end at some point (soon) or sets her sights on someone else. This is my first Chloe Neill book, so I’m not sure how things will ultimately turn out for Fox and Nik. I also have no idea how many books this series is going to be, but I need them all right now!

2.5 ⭐️ - After reading The Jasad Heir, I wanted to read something engaging but not as dense. In comes Ember Eternal, a story about a thief who accidentally gets entangled with a crown bodyguard, who happens to be a prince in disguise, while they hunt down a mysterious, magical assassin. Romantasies that are also mysteries are my favorite types of books, so I found the premise really appealing.

Unfortunately, this one was not for me. It took a bit to put my finger on why exactly I found this so lackluster, and I think it’s because there's nothing distinct or memorable about the story, the characters, or the setting.

The characters had absolutely no personalities and their backstories were pretty vague and generic. Our FMC Fox is a servant and thief with no family and no memories of where she came from. Though her lack of memories gets explained near the end of the book, in the meantime, she was devoid of personality, motivations, growth, and a backstory. For me, there needs to be at least one of those things to grasp onto as a reader to stay interested in what happens. The prince is much the same – all we know is that he's different and nice, but we don't know why. There just wasn't enough for me to be invested in either of them.

The world-building was also bare-bones and forgettable, which made it really hard to understand the stakes. The kingdom has tension between the royals and working class, but the emperor’s cruelty is just alluded to heavily – we're not shown it.

This same "tell, don't show" problem pops up again with the romance. The class differences are used to create an enemies-to-lovers/forbidden love dynamic, but it fell flat for the same reason. Our FMC didn't want to get together with the prince because he's royalty and she’s not, but the reason doesn't get deeper than that. When they finally got together, it was strange because they never really talked through their issues enough for them to feel resolved.

And don't get me started on the pacing. The first 30% was interesting, but it then flatlined until about 70% of the way through the book. Admittedly, interesting new stakes are introduced at the end, which makes me a tiny bit more hopeful that the sequel might be stronger. However, there was so much idle time in the plot that I still wouldn’t recommend Ember Eternal.

Overall, if you're looking for an easy, engaging read, there are so many better books out there. This one was just too generic, flat, and missed a lot of details that would have brought this story to life.

Ember Eternal had all the elements for a fantasy I'd love, but unfortunately, it fell a bit flat for me. The world Neill created was super unique and had me itching for more background. As Fox uncovers more information regarding Anima, her gifts, and the missing god, I became more invested in her future and past. I really liked how the world building was slowly revealed due to the fact that Fox was a young child when Anima and Aether was much more prevalent, so it's obvious she wouldn't know or remember anyways. The romance between Nik and Fox didn't ever reach a point where I believed they actually found each other attractive physically or personality-wise. The pacing was a bit of a miss as well, seeing as it feels like almost nothing happens for a good portion of the book - especially considering Fox is staying in the palace with her love interest, so you'd think they'd have more than a handful of interactions before the hunt for assassin comes back to the forefront. One of my biggest gripes was the many, MANY instances of continuity errors. There are at least 5 times I can remember off the top of my head where this happened. It was very simple things too, like Fox mentally indicating she was leaving a specific pouch in her room before leaving for a festival, but when at the festival, she brandishes it for Wren. Another was a piece of information she gave The Lady but then the next page wondered how The Lady even knew it. This happened so frequently and made the entire story feel sloppy. I was overall very bored with Ember Eternal but there are definitely readers out there who will enjoy this.

This story about star-crossed lovers might be even better than Romeo and Juliet. I am so ashamed to say that I almost DNF this at around the 20% mark. I am EXTREMELY grateful that I continued!

The world-building in this one is fantastic, it's vivd and detailed. Dare I say, there might even be too much of it (there's not). Now, I was sure I knew where this was heading as the author threw some pretty obvious foreshadowing out there fairly early on. Suffice it to say, I didn't know anything. The political intrigue had me clutching metaphorical pearls. I'd say the story is on par with Game of Thrones. A bit more predictable, but equally as entertaining. Mix that with ghosts/spirits (anima) and you have this book.

Fox, our FMC, is poor and a thief. She's intelligent and has a rare power that she uses to save someone very important. This encounter is where the story begins. Lots of players are introduced and I personally was questioning everyone's motives. If you like secrecy, action, royals mad with power, and cunning characters, this is a must read. This is a plot-forward story with a romantic sub-plot.

This book hasn't even released yet and I'm already yearning for the second book. It's a real page turner and is absolutely captivating. I'd say the only thing I thought could have been better is the pacing in the beginning, but with hindsight, I can appreciate the slower pace. It helped me develop more of a connection to the characters. There also is a bit of repetition on the plot. Overall, I think this is 4.5 stars.

Ember Eternal kicks off a new fantasy series from Chloe Neill. The book sets up the parameters of the world and introduces several characters. The world is divided into three layers, with the most critical being Terra which is home of the living, and the Aetheric which is where souls reside without body. The Aetheric is filled with Anima which are ghosts and spirits.

The story is shared via the first person POV of Fox, a 20-year-old bonded servant who was orphaned at ten. She has the rare ability to see Anima and ether, the element from the Aetheric. She and her foster sister Wren are thieves who like to remain unnoticed. However, when Fox witnesses a human possessed by an Anima go after the newly arriving Prince, she sticks her neck out and saves the royal.

Overall, Ember Eternal was an enjoyable and engrossing listen. Generally, I liked the mythology and characters. The story covers a brief period, yet Neill takes time to paint a detailed picture of the beautiful settings, political climate, and historical context. While the book a solid story, unfortunately it often feels a bit too familiar, including falling into some overused YA tropes. Sometimes there is a comfort in familiarity, but at other times it’s just tiresome. I liked the main characters, but I didn’t love the clichéd situations they find themselves in. It was also a little bit on a long side, and I felt it could’ve been edited down.

Narration: The story is shared via the first person POV of Fox. Powers has an energetic, youthful feminine voice for Fox. Powers alters each character’s dialogue with accents and adjusts for gender. Her male characters are slightly deeper, enough to sound masculine. She uses pauses and she pitches her voice to add emotion. Most characters sound unique, but at times it was hard to distinguish between characters of the same gender and social status, due to lack of dialogue tags and their voices sounding similar.

In the end, Ember Eternal sparked my interest enough to find out what happens next. My hope is that the author will venture into more original storylines with the next book.

My Ratings:
Story: B-
Narration: B+

Review copy was received from NetGalley, Publisher. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Starting a new series, Souls Burn Brightest ,  one never knows exactly how it will feel.  I liked the premise of the two indentured servants as thieves. They were quick and lively rather than beaten down by their circumstance.  Each had some useful skills, Fox and Wren.

The beginning of the story dragged a bit for me, with some aspects being predictable. Once it got into the actual thick of things, with more world building and plot, it was much more enjoyable.  So with several aspects of the setup being cliche,  I was very engaged with the magic and Fox's little known history.

For much of Ember Eternal, they are seeking a practitioner, who also wants to assassinate the prince.  His entire family could be considered suspects, as many royal families kill possible heirs to leave themselves in a clear path to power and money. The greed and narcissism where the royals live lavishly and leave little for most of the populous is common.

The prince, Nik has a different view where people are treated well. But his family is from the traditional view, and supports an arranged marriage with the stereotype villain, Catalaya. His life has not been easy, but he has compassion and a good heart.

Fox is quite clever but her romantic relationship was always doomed to leave her more vulnerable and a target. She sees Anima, sort of ghosts or souls.  This skill allows her to help the prince find the practitioner. She hunts on her own and does her best to protect the prince.  The ending is a wild ride with twists which make me eager for the next in the series.

Chloe Neil is back and I couldn’t be happier to be back in a book world of her creation. Ember Eternal has it all, and was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025. Between the slow burn forbidden romance, the unique world building, fantastical suspense and characters I genuinely enjoyed, I was hooked all the way to that ending that leaves me begging for the next book.

Fox, our FMC and Nix, our MMC, had such a fun banter filled tension between them, it was all kinds of good. What worked even better than the romance though, was the friendship between Fox and Wren. The found family, tight dynamic of the two was everything and stole the novel for me. Throw in Galen, Nix’s right hand and the dynamics between all four of these characters was even better and sooo much fun!

All in all, I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read Ember Eternal and be introduced to this new world. Now, I just need the next book!

This new romantasy series from Chloe Neill focuses on Fox, a young woman sold as a child into indenture to pay for the healthcare costs in an unsuccessful attempt to save her father, and her best friend and indentured servant, Wren. Her employer forces her to steal, but Fox only takes a little from those who can afford it and who are also unscrupulous. Fox also has a secret known only to Wren- she can see Anima, the name for other beings who inhabit the world of the Atheric, which exists alongside their world and who can communicate with Fox. While on the hunt for marks, she foils an assassination attempt on nobility and saves the life of Nik, one of the men guarding the Royal carriages. Unfortunately the assassins were possessed by Atheric magic, which then embroils her in imperial politics and a romance that she cannot imagine can have any future.
While some of the tropes are well worn ones, Neil’s writing is crisp and concise and her worldbuilding pulls you in. This first book ends on a cliffhanger.

Chloe Neill’s Ember Eternal, the first in her new “Soul Burn Brightest” series, delivers a romantasy adventure that’s equal parts intrigue, rebellion, and slow-burn tension. If you love morally gray heroines, palace politics, and a dash of forbidden romance, this one’s worth the read.

Fox, a clever thief bound by indentured servitude, steals only from those who can afford it and only enough to dream of freedom. But when she saves a prince from assassination, she’s thrust into a web of royal secrets, political games, and emotional entanglements.

Neill builds a world of layered loyalties and simmering tension, with a strong undercurrent of “what does freedom really mean?” The setup is familiar but elevated by sharp pacing and a heroine who’s more than just a reluctant savior.

Ember Eternal is a strong series opener that blends romance, rebellion, and royal secrets with Neill’s signature flair. It’s not flawless, but it’s undeniably engaging and sets the stage for a sequel that could truly burn bright.

I received an ARC copy of Ember Eternal from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

A NEW SERIES! This definitely has a romantasy vibe. Fox was sold into service to pay off debts when she was orphaned at 10 years old. A decade later, she is a sly thief who happens to also see the spiritual world. When the new western gate prince arrive and is targeted by magic practitioner, Fox assists in catching the foe. She learns some interesting truths about her past and just might have found a complicated love match for her future.

I think this book is perfect for lovers of fantasy books with a romance subplot! I loved the hidden identity trope too!! I do think the pacing was a little off in this, and it felt a little too slow paced for my liking. I also wish the characters were a little more fleshed out, as I found it a little difficult to connect with any of them.

I read a lot of romantasy, and Ember Eternal by Chloe Neill might just be one of the best. I couldn’t stop reading and fell in love with the protagonists from the very first page. A thief, a prince, and a bodyguard meet in the market—sounds like the start of a joke, right?? But it’s anything but. This is a beautifully crafted story, full of magic, humor, and adventure.

Fox is a 20-year-old thief with morals. Like Robin Hood, she only steals from those who can afford it. She can see ghosts and tries to stay under the radar, as being unnoticed helps her stay alive. She lives in the stronghold of Westergate in Carethia (the country is divided into four sections), and she and her best friend Wren are indentured servants to an unscrupulous wealthy woman who forces them to do odd jobs—even steal—to pay off their debts.

An assassination attempt in the market on the newly arriving prince forces her hand and violates her rule to stay under the radar. She is thrust into a world of palace intrigue, magic, and romance. Together with her friends Wren and Luna—a spirit guardian—and allies Nik and Galen, they have to prevent assassination attempts and betrayal and stop the evildoer who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals.

I enjoyed this book very much. It’s a highly entertaining fantasy filled with rich world-building, vivid and original characters, and a unique magical setting. The history of the world is fascinating: there are three realms—Terra, the world of mortals; Aetheric, the world of spirits/anima; and Oblivion, the place of final death. And there are Gods. With themes of loss, loyalty, friendship, hope, trust, love, found family, bravery, and following one's beliefs, the author has scripted a tale that I loved to read.

I loved the courage, determination, and morals of Fox, the way she cared for others and wanted to improve their lot. She is caught between her dreams of freedom and love and has to make the right choice for herself. I adored the loyalty of Wren and Galen, the prince's values and his willingness to improve the lives of his people and be a better ruler than his predecessors or his father, the relationships and interactions of the characters, the writing, and the twists. In fact, I loved everything about this book!

There are a few F words. As the story is set in a sort of Middle Ages–style world, the curses felt a bit out of place. Also, the identity of the prince was kept secret at the beginning, but in a couple of places he was called "the prince" instead of his assumed name, even though his identity hadn’t yet been revealed. But those are just small wrinkles that can easily be ironed out.

While the romance takes a backseat to the plot, the charm and wit of this story make every moment a delight. Oh, and there are a couple of steamy scenes. This is the first book in what promises to be a very exciting series. The author tied up most loose ends but left a few threads to continue in the next book. I can't wait to read it! Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, magic, slow-burn romance, scruples, and thieves with honor—and a heart of gold.

This was my surprise book of the week. I went into this not knowing what to expect - to be honest, I really did not expect much - and came away completely enthralled and utterly sad that there is going to be such a long wait for the next book.

This book introduces us to FMC Fox - yep, that is her complete name. I love the fact that this FMC is a very unique woman, and we actually get a morally grey woman instead of the typical morally challenged male MC. She is a self-professed thief who has been bonded for her most of her remembered life. Along with her best friend Wren, the two were basically sold into bondage to pay off their parents supposed debts. Fox is a talented thief who although poor, only steals from those who have extra to lose. She is also able to see Aether, the realms name for the energy of the Aetheric Realm, basically a type of invisible magic. And that makes her VERY special.

The world building is fantastic and easily understood. There is the land of Carethia which is ruled by the Emperor Eternal, and it is broken up into 4 regions, each ruled by one of his sons. The magic system is unveiled to us slowly as we begin to learn things at the same time that Fox is learning them.

Things start off with the introduction of the new Prince - The Western Prince - who arrives at the Western Stronghold to fill the position that has been empty for a while after the death of the last Prince. Fox ends up saving the Prince from an assassination attempt because she is able to see what is happening before anyone else, because they are using Aether.

This is a very, very slow burn romance, but there is a lot going on in the meantime, so it helps to create the tension and build on that tension. There is the villain, who is using Aether and Anima to try to overthrow the system, and Fox is the only one who is able to detect Aether. That is the foundation that creates the tie between Fox and the Prince and helps to bring the two together as they work to find and stop this bad guy.

I loved the found family aspect in this - the relationships between Wren and Fox, and the Prince and Galen help to build the framework of the story. Then there is the struggle for Fox and Wren to trust ANY royal. They have been taught to stay away from the Lys'Careth's (the Emperor's line) and to not be noticed, and they have witnessed first hand the cruelty and ambivalence of past royals to the "peasants". We get to watch as we meet the Prince and learn that he is different. He wants to be a different kind of Prince. Fox has her heart fighting her head as trusting him goes against EVERYTHING she has ever known.

There is action, drama and intrigue as this new issue with the appearance of the Aetheric summoner (the bad guy) is something that has not been seen in the realm for over a decade. The Emperor is not a good guy and is severely threatened by anyone who threatens his power - his sons (the Princes) included.

Of course, this ended with a cliffhanger, but as cliffhangers go, it was not as bad as it could have been. I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment because the set up was wonderful and there are many, many strings left hanging.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group | Ace for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. This book will be out for publication on November 25, 2026.

Ember Eternal: A Riveting Dive into Hidden Magic and High-Stakes Survival
Chloe Neill delivers a powerful opening salvo in what promises to be a thrilling new fantasy with Ember Eternal. Set in a grim world where freedom comes at a punishing price, Neill introduces us to two inseparable heroines, Fox and Wren, bound by childhood history and a desperate need to survive.
From the first page, the stakes are painfully clear. Fox, our protagonist, and her lifelong friend Wren are bonded in service to the formidable and ambiguous figure known only as "the Lady." Their lives are not their own, and their only path to freedom is paved with high-risk gambits, such as the market theft that opens the novel. This immediate placement in a world of moral gray offers a gritty, compelling starting point.
What elevates Ember Eternal beyond a simple heist story is the secret Fox carries. She possesses two forbidden and extraordinarily dangerous abilities: the power to see Anima, the restless spirits or ghosts of the world, and the innate capacity to detect Aether, the volatile source of all magic. In their society, such powers are not a gift but a sentence; a fact that forces Fox into a life defined by intense vigilance and isolation, even while standing next to the only person she trusts, Wren.
The narrative ignites when Fox and Wren are mid-operation in a bustling marketplace. The sudden arrival of a royal contingent, including the seemingly ordinary guard, Nic, shatters the momentary peace. Before anyone can react, the group is violently assaulted by an entity seemingly born from the Aether itself and assassins. Fox, recognizing the signature of forbidden magic, is forced to act. Her decision to intervene brings her into a tense, high-stakes confrontation with Nic. Their relationship is immediately charged, built on mutual suspicion and the vast differences in their circumstances, a dynamic only heightened by the fact that Nic himself is hiding a massive secret: his true identity. Fox's internal struggle, to protect her secret or save lives, forces her hand, and the novel explodes into a whirlwind of action and mystery, introducing a central tension that is sure to drive the series.
Neill masterfully builds a world where magic is both essential and terrifyingly destructive. The unique pairing of Anima and Aether creates a threat when the Aetheric practitioner has found a way to harness this power and puts not only the villagers at risk, but especially Fox. Ember Eternal promises a grand adventure, focusing on the unbreakable bond between two women and the complicated, dangerous connection Fox forges with Nic, all while fighting for their self-determination against a system that wants them enslaved and a power that wants them dead.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first book of a promising series, a must-read for fans of character-driven fantasy with high-stakes political conflict and richly layered magic. It's an instant winner.

Narration:
I thought I hadn't listened to this narrator before but I did find one other book where I have listened to her.  I enjoyed her clear, distinct voices where I knew who was speaking.  She easily became the voice of Fox for me with her performance.  I was able to listen to this at my usual 1.5x speed.

Fox is a thief of necessity. Indentured to work for a wealthy lady doing odd jobs in order to pay off a familial debt, Fox steals in order to hopefully help set herself up for freedom in the future. The biggest thing her father ever taught her was to never be noticed. But then she assists the Prince's guard in thwarting an assassination attempt on the newly appointed Prince of the Western gate and now all eyes are on her. The secrets that Fox carries will have long-reaching consequences.

I have been reading Chloe Neill since the beginning. When I heard about this new book/series, it immediately shot up to the top of my TBR list.

When I started reading, however, I found this one a bit difficult to parse through. There was this strange dichotomy of the story moving rather slowly, but also feeling like I was dropped in the middle of all the action and I had to play catch-up. I kept feeling like I had missed something but, looking back, I think this is a consequence of new world building it often takes time to flesh everything out and get familiar with it.

For me, this entire book was one big setup. From learning about the realms and the gods to the power including Fox's own mysterious power. There's a lot to establish. Unfortunately, I think this caused certain aspects of the story to seem flat. One example is the romance between Fox and Nik. You see it from a mile away. I wish there would have been more of a slow burn between them, I can't help but comparing Nik and Fox to Neill's first famous couple - probably not a fair thing to do, but Ethan and Merit leave an impression and their journey towards one another was impactful.

It's not all doom and gloom here. There are some genuinely good moments sprinkled throughout. One of the highlights for me was the showcasing of the friendships and found family dynamic between Fox and Wren - her friend also indentured to pay off family debt, and similarly between Nik and Galen - his head guard. Those loyalties and bonds are really strong throughout.

The story also slowly builds upon itself and, by the time we get to the end, I'm very interested to see how things progress from here. I feel confident that being familiar with the characters and understanding the world will be what makes the next book(s).

Thank you so much PRH International for sending me this ARC!

Ember Eternal is the first book in a new Romantic Fantasy series and I really liked it, it has interesting world building, complicated characters, slow burn romance and an ending that left me excited for the next book.

Fox is a thief with unique abilities and a servant to a noble lady. When she impulsively saves the life of a prince, she finds herself working with his guards to find the assassins, but with secrets about their country and magic coming to light, the prince appearing different from what she expected and her complicated feelings for Nik, Fox needs to help them before all their lives alongside the whole country turn into chaos.

I must admit it took me a while to get fully into this book, but once I did I really enjoyed it. The world building and magic system were really interesting, especially the magic system was unique and I hope we learn even more about it in the next book. Fox was a great FMC, she was clever, sly and really strong, she grew a lot in this book and after that ending I’m excited to see who she becomes in the next one. Nik was… complicated to say the least, I loved him, even when some of his decisions irritated me, but he was great and perfect for Fox. Their relationship definitely gave forbidden love vibes, they were polar opposites but fit m together perfectly and I loved their banter, the tension and seeing them slowly realize their feelings, I can’t wait to see them again in book 2. I also loved Wren and Luna and even Galen grew on me, the supporting characters were amazing.

Ember Eternal is a great romantasy book that I really enjoyed and recommend to everyone. I can’t wait for book 2!

Ember Eternal by Chloe Neill is the first book in her new Romantasy series, Souls Burn Brightest. Fox, our heroine, is a 20-year-old, talented thief, who only steals from those who have money. She and her best friend, Wren, are bonded to a wealthy Lady, to pay off their family’s debts. Fox also has the ability to see Aether, giving her energy toward the Aetheric Realm, which is a type of invisible magic.

The land of Carethia, is ruled by the Emperor Eternal, with 4 sons ruling different regions. The Western Prince arrives at the Western Stronghold to fill the position that has been empty for a while after the death of the last Prince. Fox ends up saving the prince (Nik) from an assassination attempt at the market, since she can see what is happening before anyone else. There is the villain, who is using Aether and Anima to try to overthrow the system, and Fox is the only one who can detect Aether, saving the attempt at the Prince’s life.

Fox is close to her friends, Wren and a spirit guardian, Luna. With several assassination attempts against Nik, she knows that the magic practitioner will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. Fox will assist with the guards in catching the foe.

I really loved the banter between Fox and Nik, who I have begun to slowly become close to each other. I also adored Wren and Galen. I loved Luna, who was always able to quickly find Fox. As we get closer to the end, Fox will learn some truths about her past; that will change things in the end.

Ember Eternal blended romance, rebellion, danger, chaos, banter, action, secrets and magic. This was a terrific romantasy based on a simmering romance and thriller. Ember Eternal was so very well written by Chloe Neill. I can’t wait for the next book.

5/5 stars: This is Neill's first entry in the Sould Burn Brightest series which is a Fantasy Steamy Romance. Following a thief and an indentured servant to a mysterious noblewoman with widespread political power by questionable means finds her life launched into a world of swirling palace intrigue after she helps a royal bodyguard fend off a magic fueled would-be assassin’s attack on a prince’s life. With her ability to sense Anima (ghosts), she and her best friend join a crown bodyguard (who turns out to be the prince in disguise) in the hunt for a Aetheric practitioner possessing innocents with Anima. In doing so, she unwittingly becomes embroiled in a dangerous world of magic, high stakes world politics and an unexpected romance. And though she longs for freedom, she must decide if love is its own kind of cage.

Witty, smart and heartfelt, Neill's writing and character work are masterful; the characters are well-rounded and complex while remaining incredibly likable with a secondary cast that are well crafted and uniquely voiced. This is a slow burn romance, with plenty of swoony moments throughout and a scorching hot and steamy OPS scene. In addition, Neill's world building and magic system are unique and include interesting and engaging elements. Neill touches on some sensitive topics; so take care and check the CWs. Neill's a longtime favorite author and doesn't disappoint with this new series; I can't wait to read with happens next, highly recommend!

I LOVED LOVED LOVED this one! Wait, listen. You’re not understanding. I LOVED THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have no idea how good the banter/dialogue is in Ember Eternal. You don’t. You can’t. You need to read it to fully understand it. I even wrote that on the book itself because I needed to share it somewhere, make it binding, make it... eternal 😝

This series has such a cool world, with different realms inside, a very unique set of powers and the authoritarian regime we so much love to dethrone. It also has THE supporting cast. I don’t even know if I want a spinoff or if I just need more POVs/subplots with those two - IYKYK - in the upcoming books because I don’t think I would be able to wait any longer. There’s also that one character who shows up just to be the bane of my existence. I absolutely loved to h*te them.

Honestly, the ending came too soon at almost 500 pages. I wanted more. I want more. I need to see where our little Fox will go and who she will become. Nik, you hang in there. Galen will help you. We will figure it all out.
