Nevil Shute Norway was a popular British novelist and a successful aeronautical engineer.
He used Nevil Shute as his pen name, and his full name in his engineering career, in order to protect his engineering career from any potential negative publicity in connection with his novels.
He lived in Australia for the ten years before his death.
I really like Nevil Shute. He's very down to earth and a pleasure to read. Venture beyond " On The Beach " and give him a try. I especially like "A Town Like Alice" and The Trustee from the Toolroom" but am enamored right now of "The Pied Piper" which I am currently readin as part of this omnibus.
Taken overall and applying today's cynicism I suppose it's a pretty unlikely outcome to this story, but what a fascinating journey Shute takes on in order to get there! A warm, delicately crafted narrative, with an ending that left me feeling very satisfied.
I loved this book (A Far Country) at the beginning. I picked it up because "A Town Like Alice" is one of my favorites. A subplot developed about 2/3 of the way in that was stupid and really derailed the story for me. Set in Australia and England, you do get a sense of the terrible toll that WWII took on England and it's people - well after the war had ended.
