Before it became the site of an amusement park, Instow Deep’s dark and bloody past was associated with witchcraft, duplicity and death. In its heyday that history grew darker and bloodier until the night of the brutal Halloween tragedy that forced the park’s untimely closure.
Now abandoned, save for the occasional tribes of clowns who choose to visit, Instow Deep is the latest venue for a #DeadEndTours urban exploration. The tours explore the history of the last witch and the twisted events leading up to the Halloween tragedy. And, this evening, unbeknownst to the tour guides, there are going to be some sinister surprises.
I've really enjoyed the Dead End Tour series and this latest installment really packs a punch. With a story set in a creepy old abandoned amusement park, people dressed as clowns running around, a group of violent thugs hunting the clowns, and a witches tale of revenge and retribution, this novel is a dark creepfest of a book.
Our urban explorers are back and, this time, the paying tourists with them are all set to explore an old amusement park on a stormy night. The stories the tour guides will tell us about a witch who was wrongfully hanged and burned in the 1600s just so a wealthy man could claim her land. She vowed to curse his family and kill his entire bloodline until she was given her land back.
As they tell the stories of horrifying deaths which befell this family throughout the years, the group is beset by a group of murderous men who want to hunt down and hurt the people who dress like clowns and hang out at this park. And as the night progresses and the terrifying history of the witches revenge is told, chaos will soon ensue. Bloody and gory chaos!
I love seeing the lead characters returning for another wild, bloody exploration. They each have their own style but they make a great team despite their differences. Cal actually plays a big role later in the book and it was great to see him take the lead like that.
There's also going to be twists with some of the paying guests which will set the action packed finale into further levels of horror.
I've loved this series so far and this is one I can highly recommend.
I received an ARC of this book from the author with no consideration. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
I really love the whole DeadEndTours concept and this third book of the series did not dissapoint. Set in an abandoned amusement parks, it is sure to keep you enthralled and engrossed in the action, while giving you some exciting rides back to the past, for information that will become clear once a bigger picture is revealed. I would have loved more horror related to the park's rides, next to the witch/clown references, but it's still a delightful story that Ashley Lister had managed to create.
Looking for clowns, cannibalism, witches, magic, murder and mystical mayhem? It's all here in Ashley Lister’s latest #DeadEndTour. Each one of these tours gets better and better and this is my favourite one so far! Great pacing and character building, the scene setting is vibrant and wholly immersive, and there are some truly chilling moments. Also laced with humour throughout, dark and just damned funny, for example, Imitation Art! 😂 (Read it!!)
Once again the past and the present collide with the stories that are told on the tour, and the way Lister does this is perfect. You get just enough information to taunt you and keep you turning the pages as quickly as you can to continue the journey, and to devour every creepy, gory, bloody morsel. The descriptions too are so beautifully vivid, all your senses come alive and you'll feel like you're actually experiencing the tour in the flesh, along with the characters.
The build up is fantastically gripping, you are completely drawn in and oblivious to anything else going on around you, right up until the awesome climax, that I was almost impatient to get to. This in turn, had me burning through the pages, and then not wanting it to end, and therefore slowing down and taking my time, savouring every word.
Accused of being a witch and on the verge of being murdered for it, Margery deals with it the only way she can, and it's brutal. It's not enough though, and she can no longer hold on to the land that is rightfully hers. But she gets her revenge before she goes, a long lasting revenge, proving she is not to be messed with….ever!
The tour takes place at Instow Deep, an abandoned amusement park built on the land where Margery resided centuries ago. Once again headed up by Billy, who may or may not have a few tricks up his sleeve to spook the curious group, tricks that may or may not backfire on him, and his colleague, Tina. After the last tour at the Hurting Fields, Tina is a bit less enthusiastic about this one, but a lot more prepared.
As always there are two seperate tours, one is more gruesome, the other more historical. But this time, there is a third uninvited group, a group of clown hunters, hell bent on destruction, spurred on by the infamous Jack Willis and his horrific clown escapades at the park several years before. (A story Ashley teases you with throughout, not giving up any gory details until he feels necessary and it's perfect when he does. I loved the impatience of wanting to know and the sheer joy on finally finding out!)
A long standing feud between the Singletons and the Instow women makes for some nasty confrontations and wicked acts of vengeance. The Instow women have a real knack of blowing mens minds in order to get what they want…. and the blood soaked fury of the clown inflicted carnage was the perfect climax! 🖤
*I always love the names that Ashley gives to his characters, the ones on the tour, I think it makes the stories even more fun when you're running around with the likes of “Dennis the Menace” and “Gnasher” 😉😂* (Again, read it!)
#DeadEndTours: In Too Deep in the third book in Ashley Lister’s #DeadEndTours series, and this one is exceptionally dark
In Too Deep has a dark and riveting backstory of witchcraft and curses and death that is a fantastic tale all its own. The main story has overt subtext speaking to bigotry and is fraught with violence and dread and suspense. The dark character humor is there, of course, but there’s an element of seriousness to this one as it explores historic and contemporary hate and the horror wrought from it.
All that being said, In Too Deep, like those that came before it, is an intense and twisted ride of illicit urbex touring, fun and enigmatic characters, brow-raising gruesomeness, and excellent storytelling. This is a dark and twisted 5-star read for those who enjoy a grisly, irreverent tale. I hope there’s another in the works.
Billy, Cal and Tina return for the darkest and most violent DeadEndTour to date, at the Instow Deep Amusement Park. Lister has created my favorite horror series and each one gets darker and more brutal. While there's still humor, it's a bloody and depraved ride through history. I love how Billy gives each of the tourists in his group funny names too remember them by. I love how Tina is no nonsense but puts up with Billy. And I love how Cal is the wackiest member of the team, but is usually the one with the best ideas. Together they deliver the best urbex experience ever and I hope this series never ends!
Billy, Tina, and Carl are back at it in the latest installment of the #DeadEndTours series. This time, the team is taking on the Instow Deep Amusement Park. The now-abandoned park sits on land with a long and violent history. Join us as the team takes you back through the park's history and dark secrets.
Is that a clown?
Ashley takes us on another adventure, and it's the best one yet. A story rich with lore, fantastic characters, and a large body count draws you in from the start. It easily ranks among the top ten of the year for me. If you haven't read him, you should quickly correct that. A must-read series from a must-read author. Do not miss it!
This is the third installment of the Dead End Tours series by Lister. I wish I could give it move than five stars! All three are fantastic however this one may be my favorite, witches, abandoned amusement park, clowns, centuries worth of curses! Lister is one of the best horror writers out there today, the way he can craft a story is just amazing. Not to mention that he never does anything for shock value, which I greatly appreciate. As they say “ Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned” now image the fury a witch can bring!
The master of Dead End Tours returns with another Banger of an instalment! So let's review, so far I have been in a haunted Asylum, an Air hanger plagued by a zombie virus and wolf creature. Knowing inevitably how much press and police reports have been filled for every single tour. Would you STILL want to go on another tour with #DeadEndTours? Absolutely! Purely for the thrill and adrenaline of what could possibly go wrong next. Especially knowing that my favourite guides would be leading the charge. I mean aside from the odd fatality which makes me think you should have your patrons signing waivers at this point. So what has Ash got in store for us this time round? How about the vengeful curse of the last witch of Instow Deep, mixed in with a deeply disturbing abandoned amusement park? All making for a killer tour, with a little bit of Scooby Doo meets Terrifier vibe. Which ironically two things that Ash brings up, as the main type of people interested in this tour. I do love that Ashley incorporates little details to make his tours up to date with the current horror trends, which speaks to the readers. Ashley has never had any trouble setting the scene in his stories and of course the return of Billy, Cal and Tina especially was a surprise. Especially considering what Tina endured at Hunting Feild, I would ask for something a little more than a steel baton. Seriously that woman is horribly underpaid considering what she's had to endure over the past selection of UberX tours. By this point it's obvious that the relationship between Tina and Billy is very strained, Ashley's writing puts that across really well. Because again there are two tours, Billy doing the history of the amusement park and tragedies that took place on the grounds. While Tina covers the legend of Margery Instow: the last witch of Instow Deep. Of course with the added bonus of people on the grounds dressed as clowns. It's logical that some of the ‘patrons’ are here to cause trouble. One particular group seems intent on Clown Hunting, having joined the tour purely for this even bringing their own weapons. One person in the group however, is out for blood which takes the story in a whole other direction. Little part of me really hoping they meet a gruesome end, of course this is #DeadEndTours so I know justice will prevail in some aspects. Billy does go into the aspect of the connection between Clowns and Inn Too Deep. As we learn about a certain clown by the name of Jack Willis and the horrible acts that he committed. This one does make me question Billy as a person, when he has to choose between his tour's reputation and the safety of his friends. He always comes back to ‘ruining the experience for payment customers,’ even after all him and his team have been through. But there are some strong character personalities in this one, a couple in particular that I really liked. Tina’s group seems to have some personal stake in the tour. As she befriends a girl, young woman and elderly grandmother in the group. By the way Ash, I appreciated where you were going with that reference. If you are familiar with Wicca or Pagan lore you will understand the subtle meaning. All three have a deep appreciation for the dedication and research Tina has done. Leading into something very interesting, especially as we dart back and forth in time. Just like we did in the last two stories which gives the reader multiple perspectives. Also a clearer picture of how the past influences that takes place on the grounds now. Making for as always, an intense and thought provoking read for those who love Ashley’s work. The setting has its own atmosphere bringing a whole new level of supernatural eeriness. Giving very unsettling vibes as we follow each tour and backstory until the shit really hits the fan. Also if something is buried in cursed land, associated with Witchcraft. LEAVE IT IN THE BLOODY GROUND!
I've read this author before and loved his other book, Conversations with Dead Serial Killers. I saw the cover of this book and got sucked into getting it. I enjoyed it as the author blended the past events that took place in the cursed land where the amusement park was located. I would have loved more info about the rides, but that's just me.
However, the story is more than just the land, there is also the matter of 'clown hunters'. At first, I thought this was just a side story, but as I read further the author blended in the events from the past in one crazy twist that I wasn't expecting.
All I can say is, some abandoned places are best left alone. After all, there's nothing worse than pissing off a witch!
Ashley Lister is yet to let me down. You can guarantee that any book of his you decide to pick up will have you hooked. I love Lister's unique mix of humour and horror. His ability to make you laugh out loud, while also making you scared of your own shadow, sets him apart from the crowd. I love the #deadendtours series, and I LOVED the third installment. Ashley Lister is an auto-buy author for me.
