"Macmillan doesn't shy away from difficult questions about addiction and recovery and, rightly, doesn't answer them ... this is a bold, timely and searching play" - Financial Times
Emma was having the time of her life. Now she's in rehab. Her first step is to admit that she has a problem. But the problem isn't with Emma, it's with everything else. She needs to tell the truth. But she's smart enough to know that there's no such thing. When intoxication feels like the only way to survive the modern world, how can she ever sober up? People, Places & Things premiered at the National Theatre in 2015 before transferring to London's West End and St. Ann's Warehouse in New York. This edition is published to coincide with the return to the West End in June, 2024
i have been looking forward to reading this play for a while now and my excitement obviously brought certain expectations with it, but i did not expect to love it THIS much. i will definitely be annoying about this for a long long time. plays like these are exactly why i love reading plays and going to the theatre. the characters were so real and likeable. no matter how frustrating they were at times or how difficult it was to watch them suffer. once i started reading i couldn’t put it down. i’m so mad at myself for not having this production on my radar while i was in london (and i was in london 4 fucking times while it was on. i don’t want to talk about it. so damn frustrating. FUCK!)
Full of emotion, pain. A compelling story. The use of surrealism. The overlapping of times and places into one. I genuinely love this text so much. It made me sad, it made me angry and it made me intrigued to know more about the protagonist. Incredible
