Backwards and in Heels by Alison Winter - 2,5/5

This is set right after Dragonfire, Ace’s first adventure where she decides to go with the seventh doctor. The doctor has offered to bring Ace back home to Perivale, but he is taking the scenic route as promised. When he receives an invitation to a game, the newly formed duo can’t help but accept. They arrive in 1920s Soho and participate in a scavenger hunt.

One thing I have to say is that it’s really annoying to have a whispering alien voice that’s half drowned-out by background music. I didn’t understand half of what they were saying.

This is a light first adventure for the newly-formed duo by design. Nothing deep or special, just a forgettable little adventure to establish where the characters are in their timeline. It’s appreciated that we get to see the seventh doctor’s manipulative side pop up a bit. And it is an interesting concept to have Ace pretending to be the doctor’s daughter. Would have been nice had this been explored a bit more.

The Price of Snow by Katharine Armitage - 4/5

The seventh doctor and Ace arrive at a ski resort where guests have started to disappear. The doctor also quickly notices that the temperature is a bit too hot for there to be snow. Something strange is going on, that much is sure. But what kind of dangers could be hiding in this cozy winter wonderland?

It’s really easy for me to immerse myself into this snowy setting. Quite a bit of action with Ace learning how to snowboard and an exciting chase scene. There’s some après-ski coziness with hot chocolate. There’s a solid mystery that keeps everything together. There’s a cool ending. And the story lightly touches upon an interesting theme. It’s a fun and enjoyable mystery story.

The Ingenious Gentlemen by Alan Ronald - 3,5/5

Sancho Panza tries to convince Don Quixote that he’s fighting windmills, not giants. But Don Quixote doesn’t stop, he’s convinced that there’s a giant evil about. Then they stumble upon the Tardis and they meet Ace and the seventh doctor. The doctor is immediately smitten by his literary hero. And when Don Quixote tells the Tardis duo about the great evil, the doctor seems to think this all sounds vaguely familiar.

I haven’t read the original book, so I have no idea if Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are done justice here. Maybe the story is a bit too relaxed and slow-paced, but it’s an interesting concept. Sancho Panza also points out that Ace and him might have some things in common. And there’s a hint of Ace starting to question her friendship with the doctor and the role she plays in their travels.

A wicked collection of audiostories from Big Finish who have given the classic Doctors a new home for a whole set of adventures.
This collection of stories of the 7th Doctor with a fresh and young Ace aboard of the TARDIS who will give her a lift home is quite diverse and entertaining.
BACKWARDS AND IN HEELS- brings the Doctor and Ace to the year 1920 on Earth. And gets the Doctor involved in a treasure hunt with a slightly treacherous organisor whose eyes are on a timemachine. However she has a mind of her own.
THE PRICE OF SNOW - Where the Doctor and Ace land in the near future at the last ski-resort with real snow. But there are guests disappearing so the Doctor has his work cut out for them.
THE INGENIOUS GENTLEMEN - The Doctor and Ace land in a 15th century Spain where they meet a knight by the name of Don Quixote de la Mancha and his faithfull Sancho Panza. And this Spanish Knight is not fighting windmills but an ancient evil that is known to the Timelord.

All three stories are well presented and a hoot and a half. With Big Finish you can recreate the magic of the TV series of a previous century. I really enjoy Sylvesters' Doctor whereas I never really saw his work when it was first shown. I have had the pleasure with the new series bluray boxes to finally enjoy his work.

This boxset is worth the money and fun to listen to.

It's a big surprise to me that the expanded media has barely or if at all touched upon 7 and Ace's early travels before 'Remembrance of The Daleks' since it's very clear it isn't Ace's first adventure in The Tardis as you can tell she's gotten used to things. 'Wicked!' gives us insight into their early travels, and I'm excited to listen to it!

Backwards and in Heels:
Ace's first adventure in the TARDIS takes them to 1920s Soho. The Doctor has been invited to play a game hosted by an entity that exists across multiple time streams. A prize is to be won, and the Doctor can't afford to lose. Ace's first adventure, though, might be her last.

Alison Winter's script is a really fun and fast-paced story with a simple premise but a fascinating antagonist. Witnessing 7 and Ace's first adventure is a really surreal but needed experience that was enthralling to listen to. Sylvester and Sophie have recaptured their early dynamic brilliantly. 8/10

The Price of Snow:
In the near future, the Val du Cam Belle ski resort is the place to be if you're rich. The Doctor arrives to solve a mystery. How can the snow not melt during the summer? Ace, however, wants to have some fun, but with rich people going missing, she realizes something strange is happening at the resort.

Katherine Armitage has written a fun story that's provided with a lovely score. It's an enjoyable story that's fast-paced and has a lot to say about rich people and what they're willing to do in the name of greed. 8/10

The Ingenious Gentlemen:
Sometimes fictional heroes turn out to be real. The Doctor, to his delight, meets none other than his hero, Don Quixote, and together with their companions they set off on a quest to take down a terrible force that The Doctor's only heard stories of.

Alan Ronald has written an incredibly fun and hilarious story that is wild and imaginative. You can tell Sylvester McCoy and Simon Callow had a great time recording this one; it sounds like the pair of them had a lot of fun performing their respective characters on this absurd journey. 8.5/10

Overall: 24.5/30

It's back to the beginning for Ace. Set immediately after "Dragonfire", this box set explores a surprisingly undertouched era by the franchise; the majority of Ace audios, books and comics are set after "Survival", so it was nice to see an earlier version of Ace for a change.

Initially, I was somewhat perturbed by BF's decision to immediately jump back to Ace for 7's box sets after just giving him a new companion, and while I would have rather seen more of Ray, this isn't a bad alternative.

"Backwards and In Heels" is a fun one. It takes us to 1920s London, where a time travellers treasure hunt is afoot. It's a simple yet enjoyable story, and surprisingly it's able to enrich the Doctor and Ace's relationship with a new angle fairly early on, but one that is still respectful of Ace's character and what she believes in.

I'm also 80% sure that this story offers us a canon explanation for the old Seventh Doctor seen in Tales from the TARDIS, but I won't jump the gun unless it is officially confirmed by a writer or when I get round to listening to the extras.

The music in this one is very, very McCoy era, and does make you feel like you're in a late 80s episode. However, at times, the music is WAY too loud and dominates the dialogue. It became a chore having to try and figure out what characters were saying at times.

"The Price Of Snow" is easy on the mind's eye (it's pretty much solely set on a snowy mountain), but the cliff-hanger was a bit obvious since there are only 2 or 3 major supporting characters anyway. I also wasn't sure if this was set right after the previous adventure or not since the Doctor and Ace were acting like they had known each other for a long time? Still, not a bad listen.

"The Inginenous Gentlemen" sees the Seventh Doctor meet literary hero, Don Quixote. The Doctor totally fangirls over him, but by the end of the story they are gentleman of equal standing. There's also a mention of Shada. I quite liked this one.

Overall, the 7DAs continue with strong stories. I only hope to see a little more versatility next year in terms of companions.
