Arletta Harrington is gone...but her legend lives on.
Samantha Kos has been miserable since her best and only friend Arletta disappeared into the mist several years ago to join her lover, the Headless Horseman himself. Coping with depression and life long trauma Samantha decides she no longer wants to live. But just before she's about to throw herself from the Sleepy Hollow clocktower a mysterious voice stops her.
Al is a demon that's invisible to the living world. That is, until he meets Samantha. Samantha can see him and she's not amused by his over the top and uncouth attitude. Al decides haunting Samantha will be a very entertaining endeavor and he might just convince her that life's worth living after all.
Sleepy Hollow stays sexy in this sequel to the bestselling novella Riding The Headless Horseman.
Molly Likovich is the author of gothic romances, poetry, and the occasional play. When she's not writing she can be found lurking around the local graveyard.
“But people don’t love sad girls. They look right past us, pray we won’t become those angry sad girls, and god forbid you try to explain why you’re angry, then they’ll really hate you.”
From the start I was thinking "it's giving Beetlejuice", and then we got this line:
“I can’t get pregnant or anything from you, right? This isn’t going to turn out like a crazy Beetlejuice fanfiction or something?”
I'M STILL LAUGHING GUYS. This whole book was full of funny, deep and romantic lines. What I love even more than that though, is the (half) Slovenian rep.
Samantha's last name is Kos, like the bird. I see what you did there, Molly Likovich, and I approve. She also worships Perun on page, we love to see it.
That golden apple tale? I need to know if it's made up, or a real story. We have a similar tale or two in Serbia also.
And the ending??? I NEED BOOK THREE RIGHT NOW GIVE IT TO ME GIVE GIVE!!!!!!
I'd suggest you start with book one of this series, but this one also let's you know the most important info if you choose to start here, and if you do, I know you'll wanna go back and check out Arletta's story too sooo either way works.
And now I need everyone to say thank you Molly for giving us more books in this universe!! THANK YOU MOLLY <3
You wouldn’t think a Beetlejuice inspired novella could illicit the full spectrum of emotions… alas this book did. Grief, lust, love, vengeance, loneliness. You are going to get much more than a pallet cleanser paranormal romance from this book. Check your triggers, and enjoy the absolute gem of a novella.
my heart is so full. I swear every time I read a Molly Likovich book I get more and more obsessed. she just never fails to create something magical! when I heard that she was writing this book I just knew it was gonna be good and after reading the ARC I can confirm it was better than I ever could've thought. this was so Beetlejuice-coded coded and with the second movie being announced I'm in pure bliss. like I'm gonna be rewatching and rereading this before that releases to hold off this anticipation. I absolutely loved this book though. omg. the representation of abuse survivors and depression was done beautifully. Samantha and Al just worked so well together and them finding solace in each other was everything I needed. where can I find my very own demon to help my sorrows?? pls. I need to know. Anyway, I just must share this one quote because I swear my entire being melted at it. "Plenty of the living have looked at me. Samantha saw me." LIKE OMG. I DIED. so good. I swear since Molly writes poetry too she just knows how to phrase things so they hit extra hard🥹 such an icon. Anyways I loved this so much and the inclusion of topics from Riding The Headless Horseman was perfect! I can't wait to see where this goes🤭
Literally OBSESSED as always with Molly’s writing! And heading back to Sleepy Hollow for a brand new story was really all I could ever ask for! Al baby, you are an ICON. I stan everything about this man!!! This book is more than my beetlejuice loving heart could handle. And I was giggling and kicking my feet the whole way through!
3.5 stars Beetlejuice - but make it monstrous This book had some real dark themes, but I liked the whole chaotic ghoul/demon lightening Samantha’s darkness in his twisted little way. He was such a little shit. Samantha and Al had good chemistry, but I was a little disappointed in the lack of creative anatomy tbh. I feel like the first half of the book was awesome - engaging and dark - but the end was kinda rushed.
Spice: 3/5
Triggers: suicide, depressive episode, social isolation, violence, murder via strangulation and neck breaking, discussion of child SA (not detailed), attempted SA on page, stalking/haunting, mention of death of parents in car crash
This was funny, spicy and all around brilliant. I would love to see this become a series and learn more about the hollow and definitely Matilda’s story.
A hot BEETLEJUICE retelling was NOT on my 2024 bucket list but it made my childhood self’s heart SOAR! Fun and spicy read! My fave in the series so far!!
A cute, fun read! I’m a big fan of Beetlejuice, so it was fun to read this and picture Michael Keaton delivering Albatross’s lines. I really like Molly’s writing style too.
Molly’s latest installment from the “Riding the Headless Horseman”-verse is not to be missed! It definitely belongs on your TBR this spooky season. If you loved Beetlejuice & Lisa Frankenstein, then this book is for you. There were also a couple fun twists. My only complaint? It left me wanting my own ghoul to get with & more of Molly’s writing!
It was really cute I can’t even lie. I honestly really hope there is another book because I want more of sleep hollow. These characters are just so good. I’m really glad I read this book. Very good characters and story 🫶🏼
Beetlejuice retelling Paranormal romance novella Black cat x golden retriever Mental health rep Forced proximity Medium burn Revenge HEA ⚠️ Triggers- depression, suicide ideation/intent
Getting With the Ghoul takes a more serious, emotional turn compared to the first book in this series. Samantha’s depression, suicidal ideation, and deep loneliness are portrayed with surprising emotional depth. I genuinely appreciated the representation of mental health as it felt raw and honest; even if it wasn’t quite what I was expecting going in.
That said, I came in hoping for another fun, spicy escape, and while Samantha does get her happy ending, the journey there felt heavier and less playful for a Halloween novella. The first half of the book struck a solid balance between its darker themes and lighter moments, keeping a steady, engaging pace. However, the back half felt rushed. Her ongoing fixation on a friend who “left her behind” years ago was understandable through the lens of depression, but it became repetitive and slowed the emotional momentum at times, thus leaving me continually frustrated with her.
One of the highlights for me was the black cat x golden retriever dynamic between Samantha and Al. He was obnoxious in a fun, endearing way that kept things entertaining even during the heavier moments. The Beetlejuice-inspired retelling, along with the fourth wall breaks (and the actual mentions of Beetlejuice himself), brought a clever and meta charm I really enjoyed.
Overall, if you’re looking for a monster romance that mixes depression, humor, and healing with a dash of spice and a clever nod to Beetlejuice, Getting With the Ghoul is still worth the read. It offers something different for a halloween novella, as it has a deeper emotional core that might resonate with readers who like their romance with a little more weight.
*I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review*
After her friend Arletta leaves to join her true love, Samantha finds coping with her long time trauma and depression very difficult. She makes the decision that she no longer wants to live, and makes her way to the clocktower with the plan to jump. Then a ghoul named Al stops her from jumping and decides to haunt her.
As always, I love anything that Molly writes, so when she asked me to read her new novella I of course jumped on the chance. Al was such a fun character, and captures your heart right from his first introduction. As the story went on you learn more about Samantha, and the things she has endured, it is absolutely heartbreaking and I loved how Al was there to support her when she needed it. The steam was steaming, honestly, who knew graveyards could be this sexy? Can't wait for the rest of the world to be able to read this soon!
So if you're a child of the 90s looking for a romance novel that encapsulates your lingering nostalgia for the Beetlejuice/Lydia shipping that you didn't realize was totally inappropriate until years later, this is almost definitely going to be up your alley.
Overall, the vibes are there. Albatross basically reads as BJ, through and through, though I was really missing a lot of the creepy-wacky charm that I was looking for. Samantha has her own voice, though considering that the book relies on a lot of references to the movie both in the dialogue, prose and chapter titles.
I didn't quite feel the chemistry between the two of them, I think this book would have benefited from 30-50 more pages of shenanigans and banter to make that feel really satisfying, but overall it was a fun little read.
🧙 ~ Post reading review ~ 💀 I don’t even know how to start The premise was good but it started feeling like a beetle juice fanfic rather than retelling Smantha is a pushover Stupid trope of man protecting the woman, misogeny aaaaa I couldn’t feel their love There was no sexual tension just sex This was so bad but at least the playlist was good? I skimmed the last thirty pages
Another great read in the sleepy hollow series. With Arletta gone Sam is feeling so lonely and sad that she wonders why she is carrying on, u tok a Ghoul finds her and flips her existence upside down! Steamy funny and romantic this sis great story set in Sleepy hollow!
I'm so glad Molly decided to continue this series! I absolutely love her writing and this book was a great read! I highly recommend it for your October TBR (or any time of year if you're an all year Halloween person like me).
I read this right after Ridding the Headless Horseman. I did not read the short story that is supposed to be between these two. I didn't need it. The author does a quick summery at the beginning.
Hot Beetlejuice in a short story where everything happens super fast. Al's snappy snark was the highlight for me! We left on yet another cliffhanger, and I'm curious to see what happens next, if the series does continue. These books have been a fluffy good time so far!
