Ali Rose sees the world in black and white, from her righteous job in conservation to the relationships she keeps at arm’s length. When Austrosands, a large titanium mining company, forges ahead without proper permissions, she decides to brave the steamrolling corporate. She, like her father, fights fiercely for the last wild places but the war is brutal and corrupt. Ali must call in all her favours and put her life on the line to untangle the truth of her father’s death. Titanium Beneath is set on the KwaZulu Natal coast of South Africa where protected dunes are mined for titanium ore. The novel fields a protagonist who battles the possibility of love to avoid the inevitability of loss, in a beautiful country that is anything but tame.
Second book by Clare Houston! A great holiday read, set in SA, with lots of Zulu thrown in and a gripping plot that kept me wanting to read on. Corruption, land issues, environmental issues and Hluhluwe Imfolozi north coast drama plus strained and hurt family relationships and betrayal. A great book!
I thoroughly enjoyed Clare Houston's second novel. Different to her first, "An unquiet place", this story, located in KwaZulu-Natal, capitalises on all the elements of good story-telling, including romance, suspense and great descriptions of the bush experience that allows one to fully visualise the context and location. I would highly recommended this wonderful read. I couldn't put it down!
A brilliant book, thoroughly enjoyed it. Suspense and complexity as one journeys with the characters. Loved the descriptions of the KzN wild areas and the complexity about protecting our heritage, corruption that is rife and doing what it right.
