On the run for my life, I stumbled into a monster's arms.
A bunch of sick, rich jerks take women no one will miss and set them loose to hunt in a twisted game. But they aren’t the only monsters in the woods.
Drym is a creature straight out of my worst nightmares—complete with horns, tail, and a killer physique. A beast who might just be the bodyguard I need to keep me safe from the men hunting me.
I shouldn’t be happy to cozy up with an apex predator, but he’s one hell of a protector, and that body made for killing is also pretty good at other things.
But my monster has trouble of his own. There’s a lab full of mad scientists eager to reclaim their prized experiment.
Our enemies plan to destroy us. Take our freedom. Our lives.
They don't know we’re ready to burn the world down together.
Join the adventure in a world where monsters become protectors, humans become monstrous, and love defies the darkest of origins.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Held by a Monster (Monstrous Guardians Book 1) by Kenzie Kelly and I totally love it, giving it 5/5 ⭐️. It’s a wonderful mix of two separate plots with a hint of mystery since one is finding the FMC kidnappers, and the other is finding the MMC scientist ab*sers. With fated mates, monster societies, and a whole lot of yummy monster spice and possessiveness, this was by far one of the best monster sm*t books I’ve read this year. I could not put it down and finished it in two reading sessions.
It has a wonderful HEA (although I would have LOVED more details honestly, maybe a novella sequel of the “travels”- don’t wanna spoil anything - in the future would be SO cool and nice.) I cannot wait to see more of this series and get to know more about the other wyrfang’s!!
Meh. This was alright, there just wasn’t much to it. Our main characters felt one dimensional (not for lack of trying) and for some reason there were a million bloody characters (most of whom were introduced once and never showed up again).
DNF at 27%. Just a little too weird for me, not my cup of tea. The story line is great, just jumped right into the um, ~action~ right away which isn’t my thing. I like to know the plot first at least😂 I probably could have read a little bit more to see if it got a little bit better but it was just so weird at that point🥴
⭐⭐1/2 - 2.5 Stars 🌶️🌶️1/2 - 2.5 Spice (Because it was honestly hard to focus on the spice in this book)
I stumbled across this book while browsing my Amazon list. I’d never heard of it or the author, but I grabbed it to give it a try. It didn’t take long to read, and it throws you straight into drama and action for the first few pages you’ll have zero idea what’s going on, but strangely you won’t really mind yet.
But then… the pacing hits breakneck speed. One thing after another after another. I swear I was getting whiplash trying to keep up.
I don’t mind a fast-paced read, but this one had a clear problem: there’s no time to breathe. No time to connect with the characters. No time to feel the trauma, fear, or tension. No time for anything to land emotionally before the story jumps to the next scene.
The writing itself is simple, so you won’t get lost but nothing has weight. Scenes don’t settle long enough to feel meaningful. And then, on top of that, the book throws in a ton of spice… often in moments where there is no possible universe where those characters would realistically be rolling around like that. It yanked me right out of the story every time, which is a shame because the framework and core idea of this world is genuinely fun and interesting.
I kept thinking: If this had been slowed down… if the pacing had been spread out… if we’d been given time to bond with the characters… this could’ve been such a good book.
As it stands, I read the whole thing, but I never really felt connected to it. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. It just… existed in this strange in-between where the potential was there, but the execution didn’t land.
What I Liked: The core story idea The monsters (genuinely cool concept!)
What Didn’t Work for Me: The extreme fast pacing Scenes thrown too close together, making time feel meaningless No immersion impossible to settle emotionally into anything
Would I Recommend This Book? Sadly, no.
Would I Reread? I don’t think so.
How I’d Sum It Up: A book with so much potential, but the overly fast pacing and simple, rushed execution made it hard to connect to anything. It could’ve been great but it needed time to breathe.
I was so excited for this I bumped it right to the top of my tbr the second I saw it, and that makes the disappointment hit so much harder. The writing style is really difficult to follow and somehow doesn’t feel like first person. While I don’t mind smut or even insta love this situation didn’t feel right and just kept taking me out of the story.
Honestly a subpar monster romance book. There was really no depth imo, in either the characters or plot. If you are reading for the spice, this doesn't hit the mark of a good monster book. I usually can give more leeway to the plot if the spice is spicing, but with both falling flat, it took me way longer to get through this book that I usually would.
All of the characters (and I mean all), were so superficial it just was not worth getting through. Their conversations felt so blocky? I don't know how to describe it, but it was like talking with AI for each one. Nothing really flowed.
Also, I get sometimes there is insta-attraction/lust when it comes to monsters that creates the 🔥🔥🔥 that all of us monster lovers can appreciate at times. However, when the moment she runs into his arms, she doesn't even question it. Like she sees the monster, never seeing anything like that in her life, and says, 'yeah okay, totally down with this complete upheaval of what I know about this life.' I just figure there would be more push back or questioning on her end. Nope.
Maybe I am the problem, but I have read a lot of monster romances, one of my favorite types of books, and this just really missed the mark for me.
Tropes: ✅ Monster (kinda monster 🍆) ✅ Fated Mates ✅ Touch her and 💀 ✅ Insta-Love ✅ Found Family ✅ Science Experiment
What it gave me was “I read Duskwalker Brides and it was good but took way too long for them to f*ck.”
Which I could understand. That book is a slow burn. It’s very lore-heavy. But when the spice happens, it is HOT. And part of that is the pining that we see and feel along with the characters before that point.
This story seems like tried to cut out all what it saw as superfluous and hit us almost right away with the spice and heavy self-monologuing. Then the character voices were sadly too similar to each other.
The MMC spoke and thought like a teenage girl. But he’s this huge hybrid monster that’s been lab-created. His chapters and her chapters sounded the same, being first person. The tense was kind of everywhere.
I understand that dual POV isn’t easy to write. But if that’s how you’re going to roll, then you have to make the tones distinct. Consider the character background. And if that’s isn’t your forte, then keep it to single POV.
This is apparently a spin off from another series of the author. Even so, the issues I have with it still stand.
Ps- how she treated him right after he gave her that first orgasm? Holy whiplash. She was apparently understanding of everything up to that point- so much so that she asked for the d*ck right away, but then he says she’s his, and THAT upsets her?

Me lo dejo en un 22%. Qué vergüenza ajena me da este libro. De verdad me pregunto si obligan a las autoras a meter las mismas CUATRO FRASES en todos los putos romances. Estoy hasta los cojones. Si tengo que leer un "you're mine", un "who did this to you", un "good girl" más, me lío a hostias. No puedo con los mismos personajes regurjitados e incongruentes todo el puto rato, me dejo este libro porque menuda basura.
DNF at 13%. I legitimately have no idea what the hell is going on because it's obvious that the author wanted to speed-run into the first sex scene by chapter five.
3.75 stars✨ That was very cute! Super enjoyable. The plot was decent but nothing crazy special. But it was good enough to make me want the rest of the series immediately 😫
This is a new series for me by Kenzie Kelly. I've read several of her alien stories but nothing with monsters. I realized that this is a spin off from another series but you don't have to have started that one to understand the plot of this one there are just some cross over characters. This series starts if fast paced like many of her other books lots of action Kendal was kidnapped from her car held and then hinted like prey. While running Bing she literally falls on top of Drym. A dragon/werewolf hybrid. He rescues her and keeps her safe. Drym and his 5 brothers were Genetically engineered to be the perfect soldiers. They were held captive and "trained" when they escaped they vowed to make sure no one would ever be able to create and harm more hybrids. Kendal and Drym have an instant connection. It has something to do with his .used DNA and having a fated mate. She offers too help Drym and his brother find help and they offer to keep her safe from those who abducted her. What they didn't know is that their fates were entwined on more than just on level. As they search for answers trust becomes friendship and friendship turns to love the soul bind kind. Its the firs tin the series. I'd like to see a bit more background and world building. The characters had chemistry and over all it was a good read. Ill definitely be checking out book 2. 💖🌟🌟💖🌟💖🌟💖🔥💖🔥💖🔥🌟🔥🌟🔥
Quick read considering it was 300 pages, it really didn’t feel like that. It’s cute but very cheesy and almost childish with some of the phrases used. If I wasn’t flying through the book I would have DNF’d but it was a really easy read. Kinda too easy… nothing to chew on or ruminate over. Insta love, insta problem solving, insta accepting of being mates, being around monsters, being kidnapped and tortured.
Basically there was no meat to this story. Not a terrible book by any means but it didn’t give me any feelings of wonder like a monster book usually does. Due to the mate bond the insta love and acceptance made it so dull.
👀Tropes: This is a monster romance with immediate spice and high heat between the two fated mates.
☠️CW: Explicit Sex, Medical Treatment past for MMC, Trauma kidnapping past for FMC, blood/gore, violence, murder (non MC), death (non MC)
📚Read Method: Kindle eBook ARC
✨Initial Reaction: THE COVER!! I immediately signed up for the ARC because of the cover (Nyxarte on Instagram). The first reaction to the book was definitely a shocker and took me a bit to get into the groove, but once I got it, I GOT IT.
✨Final Reaction: Loved the main characters, the side characters, and I NEED more of this universe. I have so many questions. Kendal grew on me so hard, especially after
💖Quotes: 🛁 "You gotta take a bath before you touch me"
🏃♂️ "If I ran, would you chase me?"
💍 "Yes. I want to forge a mate bond with you."... "Oh it's forged with sex? Bonus!"
💉 "The scientists always put more faith in their sedatives than they should."
👕 "She shook out a t-shirt and grinned before handing it to me. It was a plain white tee with block letters on the back like a football jersey. It read S.M.C. and beneath that was my first name, followed by WF. (I NEED A JERSEY)
☠ "Sure, they were cuddly maneaters, but they were my cuddly maneaters."

Held by a Monster de Kenzie Kelly Serie Monstrous Guardians libro 1
Argumento:
And bonding moments! Shocking to find these days, I know. As for the trigger warnings, thanks, but 1 was definitely overzealous. The warning for SA. It's mentioned but never happened or happens. It's a fear of the women, in both situations, but only deserves a mentioned warning. Which is a relief. And another plus for this author. No mean girls, no SA, no bully romance, no academy, no TSTL moments, no instant trauma recovery, the points keep racking up. The lower stars are mainly because we don't see the groups integrating, the time skips, and we don't get to see Drym teach them about baths (there's a story there) and I really wanted to see the guys shop online for furniture, linens, and toiletries. We also don't get an explanation as to why they look like they do, and are unable to shift, considering their genetics. So, while there's a lot of pluses to be happy about, there's a lot of info left out, too. Oh, and a big question no one is asking about considering certain activities happening. Since they're genetically a hybrid, are they sterile? Some crossed species have offspring that can reproduce, some don't. The scientists had some hopes but she never even thinks to ask. Oh, and it reads like it follows a series but makes no mention that reading it first would help.
Kendal (h) thought her worst nightmare was being kidnapped and hunted by men in the woods, but when she escapes only to be rescued by a monstrous creature, Drym, her world is turned upside down. Kendal heals from her traumatic past with the help of Drym (H), a wyrfang—a powerful blend of werewolf and dragon DNA. Created in a lab and raised as weapons, Drym and his brothers, Kragen, Cavi, Thurl, Quin, and Roul, fight for their freedom and justice against the organization that made them. As Kendal grows closer to Drym, she discovers the humanity within these fierce creatures and becomes a key ally in their mission to stop their creators. With the help of a supernatural council, they uncover deep conspiracies and face intense battles to protect their newfound family and ensure their survival. Hot and steamy human-monster romance with plenty of action, adventure, and danger, exploring resilience, loyalty, justice, love, and family.
Okay but how cool are the book covers for this series?!
Fated mates have never met as fast before, and mated… 27 pages into the story and they are already having sex. (Watch out for the spikes, you can’t convince me beacuse it didn’t sound comfortable at all!)
This book is filled with a lot of action and different creatures! We saw one dragon. yay!
There were so many characters and names that just came into the story without any background story that made me believe that the author has other monsters series and this is a cross over. I could still keep up but wished we would have follow our main monsters more.
These monsters are just big dogs with horns and very pointy claws. So cute! They are huge but they are so careful not to hurt anyone.
Where do I get one?
3/5
Will read the second book because they all deserve their HEA with their fated mate.
This book was a bit different than other monster romance books I’ve been reading lately! I really liked the urban fantasy aspect and there was a touch of action/adventure vibes that I feel like you don’t see a lot in this genre! But it was refreshing and fun.
I liked the idea of wyrfangs, and it’s cool to have a completely new monster to read about. I’m a sucker for horns, fated mates, special “equipment” and size difference lol.
I received this book for free as an ARC and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily!
Very good read. Took me a little while to get into it as there was some cross over from another book I read by a different author, it was just a scent and the lab aspect that crossed over. I did enjoy where the story ended up and I cannot wait to see who the next book is.
The writing is just not good, everything is happening at light speed, and Kendal was way too accepting of these "monsters" considering she was running from kidnappers who were hunting her as a sport.
I loved this book. This was the first one I’ve read from this author and I absolutely loved the writing style.
The way the author wrote about the terror that Kendal faced was very well done. The character Kendal was so interesting. I kept wanting to read more. It was absolutely addictive to me.
I liked the description of Drym and his brothers. I could envision each one of them so clearly.
I really loved the whole aspect of it and look forward to reading more of Kenzie’s work.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I decided to DNF this book after reading up to chapter 10, the idea is fantastic! I would love to read a book like this however this book isnt it, its waaaaaay to fast paced and there is not enough angst, not enough fear from the FMC, first off shes running for her life after being kidnapped and is now being hunted like an animal, she falls down a hill and her body slams into the MMC and yet all she has is a few scratches, i feel like she should absolutely have more injuries, broken ribs maybe, and then she gets carried into this den with like 5 of these giant wolf like beasts and shes just chill as, no fear no screaming, nothing crying, no trying to get away, literally nothing and then she proceeds to bone one after 0.5 seconds of knowing him, only to turn around and get shitty at him saying that now shes stressed about the whole situation.
Its also giving heavy duskwalker vibes like the author took ALOT of inspiration from Opal Reynes Duskwalker Brides series!
I feel like the concept of this book is good and i feel like i would love it more from a different author.
