Variation: A Survivalist Novel

Rate this book
We're all put to the test to survive. Some may pass, but others fall short. Survival is instinct, not a state of mind or an illusion. We'll always strive to live, whether it's only for another 24 hours or 2 hours, no matter the measures that need to be taken. This is a story of the ultimate survival—the extraordinary triumph over death. Can a bigheaded, stuck-up, malicious actress endure the desolate wilderness alone? Or will she fall captive to the one thing that never death?

Not impressed.

Poorly written, many spelling and grammatical errors throughout the book. Poorly developed characters and story. Not a book that I would recommend.

Just Awful

I don't know where to begin. This should have been a comic book. The writing is rife with misused words: the plane 'shuttered' before it went down; the 'stuarts' greeted the passengers. I was momentarily stumped by one passage that reads, 'It still alludes to Gorgon.' I'm assuming the writer meant something like, 'it eluded Gorgon how ...'

These might be forgiveable if this story made any sense. I can't call Alison a heroine or protagonist. She is an unlikeable, mostly repugnant character who insults and mistreats everyone around her. This includes her adoring fans.

But after being the sole survivor of a plane crash, she treks for miles in the rough and freezing Canadian wilderness, is gang raped, laughs and insults her attackers, slaughters a grizzly that has stalked her, survives a jump off a cliff, and single handedly kills upwards of 70 armed men with hunting dogs. The climax has her facing an alpha wolf in an epic struggle that (laughably) leaves her the victor. I found myself rooting for the wolf.

For some reason, all the people she has treated horribly and tossed aside love her to death. They seem to all share a curious sense that underneath, Alison is, in fact, a truly wonderful person after all. The tale gives no insight as to how or why her rude, foul-mouthed character ever developed. After these harrowing experiences, Alison becomes a humbled and repentant person.

What surprises me most is the fact that I actually read this book to the end.

This book was very badly written - incredibly poor English and probably zero proof reading. The story could have been quite gripping but the endless tribulations the heroine met on the way were unbelievable (and unlikely) and the characters were extreme and unlikeable.

Very good!

Kept me engaged from page 1. Great characters and plot. Nice day’s read. Different adventure for a more girls’ book which was very well written. Kept my attention even then!
