F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in 1986 in St Paul, Minnesota. He attended Princeton University but left before graduation to enlist in the army, although the war ended shortly after his enlistment. His work is said to be influenced largely by his time spent abroad in France in the 1920s.
Fitzgerald is considered one of the great American authors and his works are thought to be quintessential examples of Jazz Age writing. Along with The Great Gatsby, his novels include This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, and Tender is the Night. He began a fifth novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon, that remains unfinished and was published posthumously.
The Great Gatsby was first published in 1925. It received mostly positive reviews but at the time was not as successful at Fitzgerald’s previous work. When Fitzgerald died in 1940, The Great Gatsby was largely forgotten but then readership began picking up, partly due to 150,000 copies that were distributed to the American Military as part of a project instated to provide pocket-sized books to soldiers for cultural enrichment. By the 1960s, The Great Gatsby had established a reputation as one of the great American novels.
The Great Gatsby has now been adapted to film six times with a seventh version planned for release in 2012. The story has also been adapted for several other books, theater productions, music, and even a video game.
