Dark Frontiers: Cry of the Wendigo

Rate this book
In 1865, the American frontier was dark and foreboding. Settlers and pioneers faced danger at every turn, some vanishing without a trace. It took a special breed to tame this land and face the threats that lurked just outside the firelight. The U.S Marshals dispatched a special team of deputies for this task. Declan Caine and his Nightmare Hunters were sent to bring down the deadliest creatures that stalked the land. Creatures that most people refuse to believe exist.
A mysterious rider arrives at the home of Declan Caine with an urgent message to report immediately to the local garrison. Declan soon learns that an entire caravan of freight and its Cavalry escort failed to reach their destination. To make matters worse, the two survivors who managed to make it told of a strange beast that attacked without warning or provocation.
The Nightmare Hunters ride out in a frigid winter storm to search for survivors and to stop the beast before it kills again. Nothing they have faced before has prepared them for what they discover when they arrive in Moon Valley. A creature from our primordial nightmares stalks them at every turn. A beast that could be the deadliest predator ever to walk the earth.
This monster will push them to their limits and beyond. How can you stop a creature that cannot die? An ancient evil stalks the quiet valley, and the magic binding it there is failing. Can Declan and his Nightmare Hunters find a way to stop this rampaging beast before it escapes and destroys the unsuspecting settlements less than a day’s ride away? Will they succeed, or will the evil corrupt them all?

This is a fast paced read with interesting monsters and new characters introduced. The Wendigo is the pure evil and hungry. It moves at a speed unmatched by humans and cannot be killed with normal weapons. This begins as the wild hunt team finds Declan and his team still alive and kicking after 150 years or so. Declans grandfather a former Roman Centurian was on the team and knew how to find him. Behind the Wendigo comes a creature who brings an army of creatures with it. This is a fun book and leads on to more adventures to come.

Mixed feelings…

While I love the characters and storylines, and will continue to read every word DA writes, he would benefit with a real editor. Declan’s and Dougal’s accent are thick and hard to read and the growing character list makes it hard to follow. Also, jumping from character to character is just odd by which I mean going into a corporal’s thoughts as he watched Declan ride away.

Then there was Bran who changed from a man trying to be nice to his bro-in-law and taking care of his crew to the belligerent man who inexplicably argued with every decision of the men who came to save them. His behaviour from the start of the cave scene to his demise after a failed murder attempt (while surrounded by armed men) seemed designed to merely be a distraction which DA usually plots better.

I liked this book but I didn’t love it like I usually do.

Another Outstanding installment the #DAverse!!

Another installment of the DAverse! DA hots another one out of the park! Weaving another tale, linking the modern day Wild Hunt to the legacy started with the US Marshalls. The small details are correct in order to weave a believable tale.

Another Great Chapter

This story is as excellent as the others. I can’t wait for the next one! The characters are all so individualized, they seem real. This is my favorite series of all times. And the stories intertwine so well to come together in a complex life story of several people with really long lives!

I truly enjoyed this story

I have read all of D.A. Roberts books and have enjoyed all of them. They are about legendary monsters and trying to save human lives. This story is about the horrors of the Windego a beast that can turn humans that it attacks into what it is . Very Scary and if you are into the legend of monsters you need to read these books.

D.A. Roberts has done it again!

I got caught a bit off guard as this book began. Then all the characters came flowing back to me as I started to connect the dots! Love how creatively D.A. can flow his stories so they intertwine so much relatable information to their "saga of monster killers".
Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Great read as always

As Stated a grand book. .. Having Irish blood in my veins I enjoy hearing words my grandmother spoke. Makes me homesick for a place I've not seen. My 20+ years in the military always took me to the other side of the world. A few typos Declan versus Delcan but nothing big. Keep them coming Mr. Roberts you have a great following.

Wonderful Mix of Western and Monster-Hunting

The monster hunting crew is awesome in the book. I also really enjoyed reading more about Clark’s/Gideon’s family history. The mix of western and monster hunting is so much fun, and I’ve followed this series because of that. I just wish there was more information provided about the lore of the monsters they’re hunting. Great series!

5 Stars

I've enjoyed the Declan Caine books more than the wild hunts. I like westerns and since these take place in the old west there my kind of book. Also the language isn't as bad which makes them even better.

so vivid so real bridging history

Truly an action fiction that makes you think. Delan tells the story in between the European saga and the modern dark hunters. Great story.

Love this series

The men and women in the group are likable and real. They just keep loping from one challenge to another with non-stop action. Loyalty, integrity and courage displayed by each character. Blood curdling monsters. What’s not to love here!

A really really good book. I never get tired of reading this series. There is always something new going on and more and more pieces of past stories slip into place.
