Set in rural Aberdeenshire and Banffshire from 1880 to the late 1890s, this tells the true story of a tragic family incident, the victim's unsuccessful cover-up in trying to protect his son and family; recounting the lives and times of the various family members, their neighbours, and those connected with the events, giving an insight into the social history of rural north east Scotland in the last two decades of the 19th century, and covering murder, illegitimacy, lunacy and poverty. and concluding with the death of the perpetrator that finally brings closure and lays to rest a dark secret that had lain hidden for over a century.
