Rate this book
A world of suave vampires, rowdy werewolves, and seductive dragon men.

That world is now where Katherine Harrow finds herself after a disastrous introduction to the handsome Tegan Arsa, a dragon man with a twinkle in his eye and a lot of trouble at his back. Kate brings her own trouble when she touches him and a magical bond is formed, one that eternally binds them together partners.

Tegan has other ideas about their relationship as they find themselves journeying through his world of magic and fantasy. Danger lurk in the shadows but those are nothing compared to that which awaits them in the cities. The imperial officials aren’t pleased to hear about their accidental bond. Dragons aren’t supposed to bind themselves magically with humans.

What’s worse is Kate’s newfound, and very uncontrollable, magic. Their bond has granted her abilities she could never dreamed of, but she has no idea how to control them. They’ve also attracted the attention of some seedy customers who want to use her newfound gifts for their own nefarious purposes.

The pair find themselves running from both sides of the law as they try figure out why fate has drawn them together before forces beyond their control pull them apart.

I really wanted to like this, especially as the voice grabbed me right away. But from the second or third chapter, everything started to go downhill.

The characters:
The MMC was so agreeable, so smiley (I don't think I saw anything but grins and chuckles and smiles from him in the whole book), that he had no character depth. The FMC was transported to another world and never once considered going home? She had one instance where she even barely reminisced about her life, and that was when she thought she saw the elderly grocery clerk in this alternate world. You've just been transported, while you were unconscious, to a world with shifters, dragons, witches, and vampires and you never once want to go back where things were "normal?" It just seemed unrealistic that she would just be okay never going home.

The plot:
So much happened to them, rather than them doing things to drive the plot. That's fine to an extent, but the characters seemed to flow along with no real agency. Things were convenient. They stumble upon a dwarven underground, we're told the dwarves are territorial, and then they happen upon the one dwarf the MMC happens to know? By the time I got to the end, I honestly didn't care what happened next. When things weren't conveniently pushing the characters, they were uneventful or the dialogue was full of small talk. At least a third or more of the book could have been trimmed.

The writing:
As I said, the voice hooked me from the beginning. I loved the description of the pigeons (Satan's shitters!! among others). a
There were several sentences that used the same word twice, and the MMC's eyes twinkled 16 times. There were also a lot of clothing descriptions that seemed like they were part of a checklist, but were unnecessary.

A little more time with an editor could have made this stand out because, as I said before, the author's voice was strong.

Okay, here we go......so, the book description kinda says it all. Katherine met Tegan, then, she ends up in a strange new world. Well, probably not as strange to Tegan. Okay, so she touched him and this super magical chemistry happened. This magic bonded Tegan and Katherine together, for Everrrrr!
Now, the powers that be are not thrilled with said bond. (Jerks). Got that out there. So, this is an exciting, five star, page turning, can't put down book. Whew, thats a mouthful. Okay, now you're going to get so excited when I tell you......... Oh, I can't, it'll spoil the book. You just have to read it. Mac Flynn is the bomb. Read this and when the kids run in saying, "Mommy we're hungry. When's dinner?" Just kiss them on the cheek and say, "Order pizza, mommy just started another chapter." Seriously, it's simply one helluva book.

To was a very fun read. The friendship/partnership that has blossomed between main characters is literally perfect! I really enjoyed the world building, although I wish the world could be a little more monster-esque rather than human. Think of this book as a prequel because the action is rather subtle. It’s heavy on the magic, world, and people in it. I am looking forward to reading the second book!
