5+ stars. Squeee, this was absolutely wonderful, fun, delightful! Another fabulous addition to this great series.
I first had the paperback pre-ordered, naively thinking that, since the other paperbacks were released at the same time as the hardcover, this one would be as well. Nope. When I finally when to check again, I came on the hardcover edition on amazon and found out it was released 6 months before the paperback............... :| Luckily, the hardcover wasn't expensive so I immediately bought it. And boy I am glad I did. Because I wouldn't have wanted to wait another 6 months for this one. It was just too much fun to read and I laughed myself silly (and not only because of the book, but also because reading the jokes from the book to my boyfriend makes him have silly faces).
There is a lot of things happening in this book, from a sports-meet (they do sound so much fun, I wish we had them here) to a wounded leg, to dogs, to holidays, to dognappers, to reading about new friends, there was just so much going on and I couldn't stop reading until I was done with the book.
There was one thing that I found a bit weird. While I did like that Bobby got to be the dog (he seemed to really like it, for most of the times, plus it was cute), I did wonder why they didn't just get crutches? Or a wheelchair? If they want to adapt to the human society that would be your number 1 pick. And not change your son to a dog and hope no one notices how much alike they are (though that didn't seem to happen, which was all sorts of magics).
The sports-meet was a delight, and I loved seeing the twins have a jolly good time, plus I was cheering really loud when Bobby decided to do that. Go go Bobby! That is definitely a good thing to do, show him what you can do. Show him your hyena side. I did feel sorry for Minnie's dad though, he did all that effort to make food and then that happens. At least they left a bit for Minnie and the twins, but I did found it a bit rude of them. I know they are animals, but really, how are they resisting these urges while shopping? You can't just get away with shoplifting all the meat or other yummy food.
The holiday, aka camping in Cornwall, it was so much fun. I was delighted for the twins to finally meet the sea, but I also laughed myself silly over the fact that the Bolds didn't know how to put up a tent (why would you ask for instructions), that they eventually slept in their suitcases (because they forgot their sleeping bags). That Fred Bold just wandered around in a bright speedo like stuff and didn't care that all the ladies were screaming at the sight. :P It was so much fun to see how his wife immediately jumped to his defence when she heard what was being said about her husband. And then there are a ton of other fun things that happened during the vacation, but I will keep those secret.
Bobby and his doggieness was adorable, it was a bit awkward at times (because again, why not crutches or wheelchairs), but generally I loved it as it showed us a new side to Bobby. His wild side that is. We saw how much more happy he was being free and being able to just do what he wanted whenever he wanted.
The kidnapping, and all that happened surrounding that? Wonderful! It also brought a whole slew of new characters. It seems everyone knows the Bolds and is more than willing to help them out. The culprit? Creepy, very creepy. A bit of Cruella, just without the killing. But I think if she and Cruella would meet over tea they would quickly become good friends. :P
The jokes (and limericks) were a delight, I laughed myself silly, and again, I also enjoyed telling to my boyfriend, he makes the best faces. Then again, the jokes are pretty terrible, not in a bad way, but in the way that they will make you groan, laugh, and shake your head. How did anyone come up with these?
Of course the book is full of fun illustrations, and I still love the style. How the characters are drawn, but also how everything else is drawn. You can easily see that they are hyenas, and that makes you wonder why no one else notices. :P
I think I have mentioned everything I wanted to mention. It was a delightful book, and I hope that there will be many more Bold books in the future, I wouldn't want this series to stop already, it is too good. Highly recommended if you want to laugh yourself silly.
Another fun adventure with the Bolds. If you have not read the first two books in the series, I suggest you do, not because you won't know what is going on, but because they are fun and kids will love them. The Bolds are a family of hyenas living as humans, In this story they are off on vacation. They are going camping in Cornwall. Bobby has hurt his leg so is pretending to be a dog named Stinky in this story. That in itself is funny, but what is happening to the dogs in St. Ives adds a measure of adventure to the story. Of course the jokes told by Mr. Bold are corny and will make everyone laugh, kids and adults. Early chapter readers will love this book and the whole series! There are a lot of black and white illustrations throughout by David Roberts that to add to the story. Julian Clary's humour and distinctive style comes through the text. A book to be in every local and school library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
Me and my son love the characters of The Bolds and enjoy reading the books. That said, Julien has piled too many characters into this one and seems to insist that every one gets at least a line each in every scene. It makes it difficult to keep track at times. We had to keep checking who was who.
Still enjoyed it though, including the corny jokes.
I couldn’t get very far in this book. Hyenas dressed as humans and doing human things like going to school, holding a job, making friends in the neighborhood? This is not goofy fun like the Captain Underpants I saw one reviewer compare it to. This is goofy ridiculous and my 4th and 5th grade library patrons who can read a 300 page book are not looking for a book that causes the reader to roll their eyes. This plot would fit better in graphic novel format, about 100 pages, and on about a 3rd grade reading level. (Review of digital ARC from Edelweiss)
If you like Christmas cracker jokes, then this is for you. The Bolds are hyenas living as humans in Teddington. You really should read the first one to appreciate the next two, but read them you should. They are great!
This series is just getting better, ‘The Bolds’ on Holiday’ is such a funny story I couldn’t help but laugh out loud while reading this! The Bolds, a family of hyenas living a normal suburban life while pretending they are humans, are getting ready to go on holiday, bringing along some of their friends, both animal and human. But things aren’t as easy as they first thought and when one of them gets hurt, hiding their true identities might become impossible.
This book is so good and so funny that I couldn’t stop myself from laughing while reading. The first book in the series introduced the characters and how the Bolds first managed to start living life as humans in Teddington. This book picks up some time after the second book ‘The Bolds to the Rescue’ and the Bolds are now established among their animal friends. I love the story in this book, set on a camping holiday you just know there are so many things that can go wrong! I love all the silly things that happen and even something like how the tent was put together had me laughing so much.
Throughout the story which is filled with lots of silly antics, there are also so many jokes told by Mr Bold, with a whole list of them at the end of the book so you can re-read them and tell them to others if you liked them. Considering how silly/cheesy some of these jokes are (Christmas cracker type jokes), I’m pleased to say that they still made me laugh and there were quite a few I’d never heard before. The story has a brilliant ending with something exciting happening in the second half of the book. I won’t say what happens but it’s a brilliant story and has such a great ending that I couldn’t help but smile so much when I finished this.
The story itself is very funny but I do think the illustrations really make this book all the better. There are black, white and grey illustrations throughout the whole book, on almost every double page, with some illustrations appearing on part of a page among the text, while other illustrations take up an entire page. Most pages without illustrations feature a nice border on the edges and with the text being easy to read and not too small it just makes this book feel so easy and fun to read and look at. I just love how all the characters look in the pictures, their funny expressions and their generally funny looks. Sometimes a picture alone makes me laugh which just makes the whole experience of reading this so much more fun.
I would recommend this book to children as well as adults to read. Although aimed at children there are some funny references and jokes that only adults will know. The book works as a stand alone story as all the main characters are introduced, but it’s definitely worth reading the first book, at least, before this one if you can as I think it’s just going to be much more fun if you know all the characters and what’s happened to them beforehand. This was such a funny story and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series! -Thanks to Andersen Press for a free copy for review.

Another enjoyable tale of the Bold family of hyenas living as humans, this time on holiday in Cornwall. Engaging, fast paced adventure interspersed with some truly corny old jokes that will make you smile happily.
Julian Clary has got it spot on with these innovative tales - my children adore them and wait eagerly for the next story.
And not to forget the illustrations- David Roberts' drawings are excellent.
We chose this book as we have read the previous 2 books and enjoyed immensely. My 7 year old daughter has this book before bedtime and we find it very funny especially Mr Holds jokes. Great read very light hearted with a bit of nail biting drama thrown in.
Third entry in this very silly and yet entertaining series from Clary and it sees more hijinks and bad jokes and altogether nonsense in what is a good little read. Yes I'll be back for more of the Bolds!
Reflections and lessons learned: If I saw this family at a school sports day I think that I’d definitely talk to them - what fun! Clever inclusion of the Bodmin moor cougar and to hear the thought that animals are probably as moralistic as (some) humans
Love this series. Such an imaginative story about The Bolds going on a holiday and the challenges they face all while hiding their real identity from the human world.
