Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

Morning and Evening is a timeless devotional by Charles H. Spurgeon that has blessed believers for over a century.

This new edition from Crossway, bound in a handsome hardcover, features Scripture from the English Standard Version (ESV), with thoughtful updates by pastor and author Alistair Begg. His revisions preserve the richness and beauty of Spurgeon’s original words while making them more accessible for today’s reader.

Precious Blood, Spiritual Strength

On the day I sat down to write this review, I read the morning devotion based on 1 Peter 1:19, reflecting on the precious blood of Christ. I was deeply moved with a renewed passion with this truth:

“He who fights with the precious blood of Jesus fights with a weapon that cannot know defeat.”

The evening reading took me to Exodus 17:12, where Moses grows weary and is supported by Aaron and Hur. Spurgeon connects this to our spiritual fatigue and reminds us that we also need strength beyond ourselves. Christians find strength that comes through the Holy Spirit, who helps us in our weakness:

“The Lord cannot deny his own declarations. Hold up the rod of promise, and have what you seek.”

Meditate on God’s Word

Morning and Evening was one of the first devotionals I read as a young believer. Its format of brief, powerful meditations grounded in Scripture was perfect for my daily walk with God.

Making Morning and Evening part of your daily rhythm is the perfect book to help you meditate on God’s Word day and night.

I received a media copy of Morning and Evening and this is my honest review.

Lovely translation. Classic work. Theology on fire. Spurgeon doesn’t always do perfect exegesis but his truths are biblical. Top three favorite books in my life.

Spurgeon has a profound heart for Christ and a powerful way with words. This is a timeless devotion for a reason and I was often strongly encouraged as I read this throughout 2025.
