If you’ve ever gone through the Simeon Trust First Principals workshop, this is essentially that content but geared towards Bible study rather than sermon prep. Good stuff for a group read.

Great, introductory sketch of some core principles for reading the Bible rightly. Not meant to be an A-Z on Bible Study, but it provides guide rails to keep you on target. Helpful practice sections at the end of each chapter. Will be handing out to all my youth small group leaders.

Whether you’re teaching a small group or reading the Bible in your quiet time, this should be a must-read for every believer.

It equips you with practical tools to read, understand, and apply Scripture accurately—guarding against watering it down, taking it out of context, or allowing personal feelings and perspectives to shape its meaning.

It cultivates greater humility and reverence for God’s Word while building confidence in handling it faithfully.

MY NEW FAVORITE BIBLE STUDY BOOK!

I am so glad I found this book. I’ve been on the hunt for several years for a resource just like this one. I have taught a “How to study the Bible” class for several years at my church and I have been looking for a clear and consistent resource that actually works and after sorting through many others I found Understanding God’s Word and I LOVE it!

It perfectly balances deep and helpful hermeneutical tools in a clear and accessible way. Too many other books were either to simple (just pray and read!) or a full on textbook.

It’s 120 pages so regular people will actually read it!

It has good teaching AND then includes examples and exercises in the book.

The tools are memorable and cover many hermeneutic tips in a simple way. It doesn’t get bogged down with some of the more textbook style things (which are good but hard to transfer to a church setting) but it also gives the reader major pillars of good Bible study method.

MY FAVORITE PART of the book is that it has a focus on studying the Bible with Jesus and the Gospel as the main point. This is shockingly absent from so many other books on studying the Bible and I was thrilled there was a chapter devoted to it in this book.

Additionally, I purchased the video teachings that go along with this book and found them helpful.

I’ve this resource. And I can’t wait to use it with our church this spring for our class.

Thank you Nielson and Crossway for putting together in my opinion a missing puzzle piece for Bible study students everywhere!!

I am always looking for resources to help meet and equip students who have recently become new Christians, particularly in the disciplines of Bible interpretation/reading, theology, and Christian living. Up to this point I have struggled to find a book on Bible interpretation that covered three important bases: (1) being simple enough for new believers to read and grasp, (2) introducing new believers to real tools of Biblical interpretation beyond subjective practice, and (3) being practical enough to help new believers see how these tools apply to actual Bible reading. This is the one book that I believe covers all three of those bases. This will likely be my go to resource for newer Christians who want to read God's Word rightly, but haven't yet walked with God for years. It puts a lot of what I've learned by intuition onto paper. Highly recommend!

Great for: someone who has never been taught how to study/read the Bible or a small group context with a diverse spread of experience reading the Bible.

This is very introductory and foundational, so in that sense, I think this does a good job of providing basic tools for studying the Bible. I really appreciate 1) the guided examples in each chapter and 2) the focus on memory and prayer in conjunction with each tool.

How it could be improved: I felt that the book missed a narrative thread, I.e. calling back to previous tools and iterating on how those tools work together to support Bible study. Despite acknowledging that this is an introduction to hermeneutics, this book is severely lacking in “next steps”.

GREAT TOOL!

Great beginner to intermediate book on learning how to read and STUDY God’s Word. Fairly simple, but deep and rich. Great for personal use, or in a group setting. I taught this as an 8 week class. Highly recommended.

This is a helpful introductory book on how to read your Bible. Given its brief length this would be ideal for new believers. More mature believers may appreciate this as a refresher.
