When strange marks appear on Clara Afron's body, this is what she fears most. The whispers and prophecies of nightmares and terror. After successfully ignoring the marks for almost a year, Clara is thrown back into a world of uncertainty. The ruthless king takes her into his castle, under his soldiers' wings and has his staff teach her and train her, clothe her and feed her. Keep her safe.
But Clara doesn't know who to trust - not with her secrets or her abilities, much less her life. As relationships grow and power builds, secrets are shared, but there are more questions than answers and the illusion of safety is shattered.
Clara fights to stay alive but her life quickly becomes a tailspin of beautiful, powerful, welcome darkness.
Just an Aussie girl who loves to daydream ✨ I’ve never been great at talking about myself or making bios, but I have an imagination the size of Australia and while I may not have enough time on my hands to be writing every second of everyday like I’d like to - thanks to my tornado toddlers - I had enough time to write my debut, Shades of Smoke and Shadows which releases in July, 2024 as the first instalment of the Crooked Crowns series. Here’s to being an author, the faerie world I wish I could live in and so much more fun to come!
Book one isn’t even out yet and I am absolutely chomping at the bit for book 2. All I can say is this book did not develop how I thought it would and the last third took me for an absolute ride and I wish I was wearing a seatbelt.
Shades of Smoke and Shadows is not just a romantasy with some unique fae, lore and great world building. It’s also a book that will reduce you to a complete and utter blubbering mess while you sit there opening and closing your mouth like a fish. If you’re going into this book wanting straight romantasy buckle up and prepare for it to be a lot darker. This book is not just for the romantasy fiends, this one is also fully in the court of people who froth a dark fantasy and likely also those who enjoy dark romance.
Our story centres around Clara, who is all things considered a pretty average girl just trying to make her way in the world. She is like the other girls, she loves her family, her friends, and was happy living her life before she was uprooted by two extremely handsome fae. What happens then on you’ll have to read and find out for yourself but buckle up, seatbelts are required on this ride.
You’ll face plots that twist and turn, dark, gritty fantasy threads, a villain you actually want to hate. Add in some sprinklings of world building that doesn’t feel like an info dump, and the last third that feels like you’re being thrown off a cliff and you’ll be like me burning for the next book. How could I forget, there’s also a bunch of Aussie humour folded into the mix as well, so you’ll have some giggles before you bawl your eyes out.
Thank you so much Celia - you tore my world in two and I honestly don’t know how I’m going to cope with the re-read before the next book.
This book is beyond fantastic. It had sexual tension, it had wingspan, it had banter and harmless flirting that turned into feelings. It had me so interested from the start to the finish and I am so sad that book 2 isn’t out because it is a NEED!! This book I felt never had any dry spots in the plot. There was always something going on but never overwhelming and so easy to follow. Beau was a dark and mysterious character at the start but he was so soft and caring on the inside. Her platonic friendship with Neven, I really enjoyed it. Watching Clara come into her powers was so empowering to read as she started channeling them to her strength.
For Clara to not only lose Neven but also Beau. Both her best friend and her mate… I am so beyond numb. Both were such a plot twist. Especially Nevens death. That death had me gasping and crying all in one. I had to take a few moments to gather myself because it truly broke me.
But Beau’s death? That broke my soul. For him to die and not know Clara ever forgave him or for him to ever tell her he loved her so fiercely that he would do anything to keep her safe. I just can’t! This book has officially became one of my favourite books of the year.
I cannot wait for everyone else to read this when it gets released, because I want everyone else to share my heartbreak. ❤️🩹

THE ENDING THO YALLLLL!!! Had me bawlinng, was not expecting that and my hopes and dreams were crushed for the both of them😭
This fantasy was built on lores and a unique world building we dont see often! I loved clara, and intrested to see how her powers grow and if she wver learns about her birth family!
This was dark and gritty, and i loved every moment of it!
“He was grateful, and awestruck, and so fucking in love with her he couldn’t remember what it was like before he met her”
✨🌶️ (1 scene - slow burn) ✨Dark elemental fantasy ✨Don’t get attached ✨Touch and die
This was an incredible read from start to finish. The tropes don’t do it justice - I couldn’t put it down! A strong, independent FMC, Clara, is just what the King has been looking for. Taken from her home by 2 fae, Neven & Beau, due to a mysterious power she holds, she can only wonder at what exactly she’s wanted for, and what price needs to be paid.
Great progression of characters, and perfect amount of intrigue, without enough to lose readers!
3.5 ⭐️It took a little for me to get into this book I think it was the writing style, after about 30% I got very into it. I loved the premise of this story and the elemental magic. I have so much more I want to say but cannot without giving spoilers but I will say that ending, that middle!! I feel victimised by Celia how dare she do me dirty and deny me like that (IFYKYK).
Looking for snarky banter and heartbreak? This series is for you! Shades of Smoke and Shadows has everything - the fae, a woman for finding her magic, and a brooding MMC. What more could you want?
Ooohhhkkkkk. I have a lot to unpack here so I’m going to sandwich my opinions.
The world is incredibly fascinating. I loved the idea of the magic system and the politics. I could imagine all the variants of fae easily, they were well thought out and described and there were elements which aren’t overly common within this genre which has become heavily saturated with fae romances.
In saying that, there is a lot of world building that feels irrelevant to the plot. Much of what’s happening feels like a filler episode and I question how much of it needed to be in the story and what could have been shortened to drive the plot forward. The romance/relationship aspects made no sense to me at all. I was very confused about them 90% of the time. I wish we had more about the king, we know he’s the villain but I wanted more substance and depth to him to really root for Clara to win.
What I do like about Ralks writing is that she is not afraid to bring the dark aspect to dark fantasy. There is torture, gore and death. There wasn’t a convenient escape for Clara which let her come out clean in the end. People die. There is betrayal. There is also a brutal cliffhanger at the end.
I think it’s a good start for a debut author, there are definitely things to work on but the structure and bones are good.
To say I was DEVASTATED when I turned the last page, would be an understatement - and I mean this in the best way possible. The twists, the turns, the take on Fae lore that is refreshing and new, not to mention the way Celia writes the best smart-mouthed female protagonist who just doesn't know when to quit, it all adds up to a hell of a read. Book two is going to hurt (so good).
We follow our FMC, Clara as she navigates being taken from her adoptive home by two Fae, her magic dormant, her attitude sharp and the reasoning for the Kings orders unclear. As the frost surrounding both Beau and Neven starts to thaw and they get to know each other, the mystery on why the King wants Clara deepens. Especially when they arrive at the kingdom and Clara is treated to a gilded prisoners existence, full of training with the dark and brooding Beau, who keeps his cards too close to his chest, and social activities as the Lady Clara with Neven, one of her only friends in a hostile and confusing environment.
As Clara's magic grows, and as the Kings plans come to light, Clara is thrust into a deadly game of kill or be killed with devastating consequences.
I don't want to give anything away as the discovery of the pieces falling together must be experienced first hand, but if you like:
🖤 slow burn 🖤 forced proximity 🖤 feminine rage 🖤 morally grey MMC 🖤 touch her and die 🖤 elemental magic 🖤 untested and unknown magic abilities 🖤 he falls first 🖤 betrayals 🖤 power hungry, evil King 🖤 twist on traditional Fae lore
you won't be able to put this one down!
You'll need to check the TW before jumping in, as there are some intense scenes that unfold, and be warned... the cliffhanger ending will either make you swear profusely at the roof or throw your book (carefully) at the wall. It's the best.
“Some fae believe that tetherbonds are shooting stars that have split in two on their descent” 💫
I am not okay !!!!! This debut fantasy from Australian author @celia is one of my top reads this year I absolutely devoured it!
My heart was not ready for this ride, I cannot believe the turn this took and I neeed book 2 yesterday (even though book 1 isn’t released until 13th July 🫣)
The slow burn, tension, magic, politics, banter, twists - everything I love in fantasy was wrapped up perfectly in this book. 💗
Clara is a feisty and clever FMc who has such a hard time - she grows up knowing she is different then the others in her family and town, only to be taken away and held prisoner for these reasons beyond her control.
Clara didn’t expect to become friends with the two soldiers who came to take her away, she didn’t expect to need them so deeply - this is what makes this book so heartbreaking.
“No, I will not run again when I am finally released from my rope shackles. Hell, if you play your cards right, I might just ask for you to tie me up again”
This started so light and fun and cheeky with so many giggles, but ended in sobs - it literally took me on a journey through every single emotion.
Hmmmm, this one took me a bit to get into. However, once I got to that point of no return (about 35% in), I began to really enjoy it.
There's a lot of world building in this story, as well as magic, tension, banter, politics - the perfect little fantasy universe. I did find some parts to be unnecessary to the story, almost like the author felt it needed to be padded out some.
“Call me sir one more time and I’ll show you just how quickly and intimately you could get to know me.”
The story revolves around our foul-mouthed FMC, Clara, and her self-discovery journey. Adopted and unable to find where she fits in, she is taken away and held prisoner. The two guards who collected her become her friends and I am enjoying the dynamic between them three of them.
I do recommend this book to lovers of fantasy, magic and dark themes. Please read the trigger warnings before reading this one.
I'm really looking forward to reading book 2 in this Crooked Crowns series, and I am glad for the Glossary and Pronounciation Guide at the beginning of the book, along with the brief guide to the Vequil Fae. They came in very handy while reading.
As I read this book I tried to think how I would review it. I could talk about the magic systems, the various species of fae, of shifters, I could talk about the wingspan. And I probably should.
I should tell you how it’s a unique take on fae and magic, on tyrannical kings & entire missing courts. We should talk about how the FMC is clearly more than she appears, about how certain magic appears on your skin in a physical form. We should talk about the sort-of love triangle, what I assume is a fated mate, the hidden identities that are slowly coming to light. The betrayals, the miscommunication, the attitudey, naive FMC who is absolutely not here to fuck spiders. We should talk about it all, about how I loved it, mostly. There was a few spots I felt were draggy (is that a word, idk, my heart and mind are destroyed), and a few that felt not needed, which is why it’s not a full 5 star. We should. But I can’t.
Because I kept reading. I read, and my heart rate increased. And then it shattered. It shattered twice. The ending. THE ENDING. I need book 2, immediately.
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to review this book. These opinions are my own.
🧡🔥e-ARC review 🔥🧡 Shades of Smoke and Shadow by @celiaralk.author 5⭐️ 2🌶️ Release date: July 13 🗓️ This was my first ARC read I’ve ever done, and I feel so spoilt by the phenomenal world Celia has built. There’s a glossary and pronunciation guide (!!!!), and a guide to the world of the Vequil Fae included in this book.
We follow the storyline of Clara’s journey through dual POV’s. Each chapter had me more invested than the last, gasping and covering my eyes but unable to look away 🫣😩 If you love elemental magic systems, a badass, strong willed, grumpy and flirtatious FMC, you NEED to read this 😍
This book is for the lovers of dark, thought provoking fantasy, with twists and turns that will leave you with your mouth wide open, wondering how the fk things got to where they are, but devouring every word, sentence, paragraph and page in search of answers.
“You? No, sir. I don’t know you either.” “Call me sir one more time and I’ll show you just how quickly and intimately you could get to know me.”
This was an incredible read, one I’m so honoured to have been apart of
Clara Afron, the FMC, is caught in a whirlwind of uncertainty and danger, and her evolving relationship with Beau was one of my favorite aspects of the book. Their chemistry crackled in all the right places, offering a slow burn that never quite ignites fully, but still leaves you wanting more. If you’re looking for “spice,” though, this isn’t the book for you, as it ranks 1/5 on that front. The focus is definitely more on character development and the mysteries surrounding Clara’s powers than any romance.
However, the ending left me deeply frustrated. Just when I thought things were about to come together, the book left on an unsatisfying cliffhanger. It left so many questions unanswered, and instead of enticing me to read the next book, it made me want to scream! Because of that, I doubt I’ll continue the series.
That being said, if you enjoy complex world-building and slower-paced character dynamics, this may still be a book worth picking up. Just be prepared for an ending that may leave you with more frustration than closure.

When I first picked this up, I was fully prepared to say, “Eh… maybe not my vibe.” I even set it down for a couple of days. But then I came back—and WOW, am I glad I did. This book completely sucked me in with its immersive, magical world and refused to let go.
First of all, bonus points for the glossary and pronunciation guide because my brain appreciates not butchering fantasy names. 🙌 The dual POV? Chef’s kiss. I love seeing the story unfold from different angles, and it added so much depth.
And Clara? Absolute icon. She’s strong-willed, magically unique, and takes zero nonsense from anyone. Watching her navigate this world was incredibly satisfying. Just when I thought I knew where the story was going—plot twist! Then another. And another. Each turn pulled me in deeper until I was fully invested and emotionally attached.
What started as a hesitant read quickly turned into a “just one more chapter” situation. If you love rich worldbuilding, strong characters, and surprises that keep coming, this one is definitely worth the ride.
Celia built quite the world with Shades of Smoke and Shadows, the first in the Crooked Crowns series. I feel like I'm still learning what the different types of fae are (curse not having a physical copy of the book so I could refer to the descriptions a thousand times!), but it didn't make the story difficult to follow. I absolutely love Clara and her personality, and I'm 100% here for her journey as she learns more about and develops her powers. My heart is broken - UTTERLY BROKEN - in regards to Neven. My mouth was literally agape for several minutes, and I think my soul has been altered forever. Celia might need to pay for my therapy. I'm more torn apart by him than Beau, truly. I also love-hated - hate-loved? - the torture scene. Was it real or not?!?!?!? And this king - I cannot wait to see what goes down as this series continues. Crooked crowns, indeed.
I really enjoyed this book, and I'm so god damn excited for the next book! The end OMG left me wanting so much more! This story follows Clara on her journey for self-discovery as she learns more about her magic abilities as they begin to manifest. She is still so unsure of who she is and where she comes from as there is still so much mystery surrounding her heritage. The King's obsession with Clara's power and he desire to take it for his own add another element to the storyline, and he knows something more about Clara yet has not yet shared what he knows. There is so much more room for this story to grow, and I can't wait to see where Celia's writing takes us in book 2. The ending ripped my heart out, and I need to know what happens next now!
"Shades of Smoke and Shadow" Celia Ralks' debut novel and Book 1 in the Crooked Crowns series.
It follows a strong FMC named Clara who's taken from her home to live in the Kings castle as she tries to figure out what the mysterious marks on her body are and who she can trust all the while learning to control her abilities and stay safe.
Told from dual POV, it has Fae, Elemental Magic, a wonderful glossary that helps with pronounciation, incredible world building, slow burn romance and characters that you just want to read more about! And the ending 😱 left me wanting to read the next book!
It took a little while to get into but by the end I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Overall a fantastic debut novel from Celia Ralk. Can't wait to read the second instalment.
Celia!! You captivated me from the beginning of the book to the very end. I was enraptured, enamored, and deeply inspired by your literary baby. This book was everything I could have dreamed of. The banter between Clara, Neven, and Beau was some of the best I have ever read. These characters showed depth, growth, and I built such a connection with them all. I felt what they were feeling, was angry when things happened, and in love with the relationships you manifested. You described the world Helenica beautifully and I SO appreciate the map, pronunciation guide, and the guide to the vequil fea. It truly helped me to connect to the world you have built and understand what I was reading. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I now need the second book asap!
I need to be sedated immediately. Holy. Emotional. Damage. What the actual fuck just happened?!
Full review to come, I’m incredibly tortured right now.
?!?!?!?!?
This book. This mother f’ing book. What in the actual hellscape of surprise emotional destruction.
Celia not only crafted a rich world full of magic, and fae courts unique and with secrets of their own, a villain that genuinely FEELS like a villain, winged men (we love this) but also gave us readers the absolute middle finger. And I honestly love it see it, watch me eat up a book that fucks me up emotionally.
The plot twists MY GOD. I was strapped to a fucking rollercoaster against my will, and was screaming crying throwing up for the last 1/2 of the book. Like actually just wanted to crash out. I sat and stared at the roof for 10 minutes after I finished. Unwell.
Like I actually felt sick when I finished this.
The banter and the cast are impeccable, and Clara, our FMC is a badass and her character development is something I’m like, actually hungry for. I can’t even talk about anyone else.
If you want to feel like your soul’s been used as a piñata by a particularly vengeful author… Read. This. Book. Now.
I had the honor of receiving this as an ARC and oh wow! Celia did not disappoint!! This book transports you to a magical land of fae (complete with a guide of all types in the beginning!!) It centers around Clara who was adopted and trying to figure out who she is and where she fits in. The king finds out she is special and sends 2 men to retrieve her. Clara is witty, fiesty, foul mouthed and awesome!!! This book kept me guessing, crying, laughing and in shock. The ending is a major cliffhanger. I can't wait for book 2!!! Perfect for those who loved series such throne of glass and trial of the sun queen.
This book is about Clara who has markings on her body not like anyone else. The king sends two men Beau and Neven to bring her back to his castle, where the king keeps her prisoner. Clara is taught how to use her powers as the king has something planned for her. There was so many twists and turns and my heart broke throughout this book.
This book has it all magic, slow burn, fae, heart break and the ending my god, I need book 2 now. What did you do to me, I was so shocked, upset, sad, angry and kept saying what the hell. So much going on and I did not expect any of it.
When I first started this, I thought it might not be for me. I gave it a couple of days, then decided to try again, and I am so glad I did! I was captivated by the amazing world Celia has created.
Firstly, there is a glossary and pronunciation guide, which I found extremely helpful. It has duel pov, which I personally love. Clara is a strong-willed, take no crap from no one, strong magically unique fmc. There were many twists and turns, each one pulling me in more and more.
I truly can't wait to see what is in store for us next. Thank you, Celia Ralk. You are amazing ❤️
I straight up loved this book. I loved the characters, the world, the tropes and the writing. I’ve been after a good fantasy that I can really get lost in and this was it. Our main character Clara goes on a journey from being slightly odd and unsure of her origins to claiming her power while still being a bit unsure of her origins but that’s a book 2 mystery. The support characters draw you in and drop enough clues that you think you know where it’s going and then bam!! Plot twist right in the feels. You don’t need to know much else about this book except that you should read it. I’m excited for book 2 and where this story goes next.
Dark, sexy, wild and unpredictable, I was NOT ready for Shades of Smoke and Shadows! The characters are intriguing and complex. The world feels real and totally captivating (and really accessible, thanks to the glossary at the start of the book). And thanks to the gripping adventure, with a dash of heartbreak, this book was unputdownable for me! SoSaS was a stunning, well thought out and richly descriptive debut from Celia Ralk. However I am, of course, now SUFFERING because of that damn cliffhanger!
What a book! I love that there are so many nuggets and foreshadowing dripped through but we have so many questions yet to be answered.
I love the dynamic between Beau, Neven & Clara I loved the guess game of would she pick one, would she pick both would she pick neither!
The plot twists after half way just continued to hit and I didn't know what way was up anymore! They were well done and the crumbs were there to see them coming had I been more observant 🤣
THIS. BOOK. OMG. It was such a rollercoaster of emotions! One minute, I am laughing at some smart ass thing Clara has said, and pages later, i am sobbing. I NEED book 2 ASAP. Can i beta read?? haha, I am so honored to be able to read this book early.
Relese day is in 2 days!! ♡ I highly recommend this book, but definitely invest in a box of tissues before you start!
For the first time in many years, I actually got lost in the story so deeply that the feelings were not just inside but outside. (ok so I cried like a bish)
Though it has left me longing for more it is amazing enough to have me satisfied too.
I want to tell you all about the feelings and the adventure and just all the things but I cant because it would ruin it for you. All I can say is YES this is an amazing book and great choice of read.
I received this book in a monthly subscription box. When I started reading, I thought it might turn into a cheeky, why-choose fantasy novel.. Celia, however, built a world so vivid and full of emotion just to rip my heart out and leave me staring at the wall in disbelief after finishing it in one day. I highly recommend reading this if you like feisty FMCs and rich magical world building.
