The picturesque streets of Wormwood have been blessed and cursed by fae since its beginning. Sequestered by a bewitched wilderness, the locals know fully well to leave The Wyldewood and Eversound alone. Except, Mairi Fable has been drawn to the abandoned homes left to decay in the forest for as long as she could remember. As she’s equally entranced by the waters that surround her birthplace, Mairi’s neighbors regard her as a corrupted soul or a potentially possessed witch.
When a relative leaves her ownership of a local museum and a small cottage closer to The Wyldewood than she could have ever hoped for, her wish to leave the rumors behind seems to have been answered. But as Mairi becomes better acquainted with a mansion that shifts in response to her presence, she’s besieged with visions that take a heavy toll on her heart. Reliving the memories of star-crossed lovers long since dead, Mairi realizes there’s more to her family’s history than meets the eye.
Lifelong questions haunt her as she works alongside Castor, the museum’s curator, who appears to be hiding heartaches of his own. A disembodied voice blurs the line between past and present, creatures from folklore transform into real life problems intent on Mairi’s demise, and her dreams hold suspicions too dangerous to speak aloud.
Both Mairi and Castor have reason to believe that something terrible is on the horizon, and as they spend each day searching for a way to survive, the walls between them fade away.
Wormwood’s history is full of secrets, and the death and reckoning of a single couple may be to be to blame. Can Mairi and Castor defeat a curse of their own making?
"He should have known, from the second he dove into that riverbank after her, that even if he survived, he was lost."
(Disclaimer: This is less of a "book review" and more of a fan letter from one writer to another.)

Hi Wendolyn, I really enjoyed reading your book!
The mystery pulled me in right away. I had a lot of fun coming up with theories and then watching the story unfold in unexpected ways.
There were so many little details, little hints, that I appreciated a lot.
I am still reeling with how fast everything moved at the end of the book. (I re-read the last four chapters twice in a row.)
And the switch in POV to transition to the next book was brilliant.
I am so curious to learn more about Wormwood and the lore behind these fae. The connection between the four main ones and the interplay/history between them.
Fae are tricky! It feels like there is still a lot to uncover about what has been happening with Mairi and Castor and the Fable family. Curious to see where book two takes things.
I still have a lot of thoughts I am sifting through (like how well the reveals at the end explain the depth and intensity of feeling from the start), but I am too impatient to sit and sort through it all when I am itching to read the next book! 😂
All in all, it was a joy to stumble across your account on Threads, and subsequently, your book.
Looking forward to the next! - Brisni

Quotes I loved:
"There was nothing separating Mairi from the electricity on the wind that sparked against the heavy scent of her home and threw reckless flecks of hope into her veins... For the first time in her life, she felt her surname fit. ...The solitude that sank between her and her ancestors fell into nothing more than crevices between the centuries."
"He followed her swiftly as grief follows death and dawn follows night. She could have been leading him into hell, but in that moment, he would have gladly gone with his soul in offering for her safe return."
"How many more lifetimes would she love him, if she could?"

A recommendation to all readers: do not skip the acknowledgments at the end. I, for one, am very glad I read them.
Thank you Wendolyn Baird for sending me this review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This book will take you on a wild adventure, full of dark twists, magical turns, and the intensity will have you sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time.
It's hard to even put in details from the story, because there are so many twists, that I don't want to spoil anything.
The descriptions are lush and decadent. It's like biting into a dark chocolate truffle, and savoring it as it melts in your mouth. Once you start reading, you won't want to stop. The pace is slow, but so steady the whole way through.
It is very slow burn on the romance, and it was crazy how they went the whole book with barely even touching each other, but the bond is so strong. This is perfect for you if you prefer your books without spice. There is only one scene at the very end, and it's not graphic at all.
It also led in beautifully to the next book, and I'm looking forward to starting it after I let my brain simmer with this one for a little bit.
2.75 I’m just confused. What the heck happened?? When I did understand it was great, but I never really understood what was going on. If you asked me what happened I could probably give you a general idea, but I couldn’t tell you like anything no about what happened at the end, because I have no flipping idea. I really liked the romance, too bad there was like none of it. I actually did like this book, just no clue what happened. lol it was probably me though, I just felt a little slow reading this….
First off, I'd like to say how much I loved Mairi. She was so sassy and real. Love a genuine FMC. This was a really engaging story about witches, fae and the worlds beyond. I love how the magical world slowly seeped into the story. There were a lot of twists in this story that I didn't expect. I love a story that isn't predictable. And this one did not disappoint. It was a fun read, and leads you wanting the rest of the story from the ending. Looking forward to the next installment!
Ahhh! This book was so good! Our main characters are grown, and caring with some humor and sarcasm sprinkled in. I loved the relationships between all of the characters as well as getting to figure out the mystery with them. We have angry witches, angry fae, clues and foggy memories. Your heart will go on a rollercoaster with these characters. Make sure you have book 2 before you start reading this one because the cliffhanger is going to leave you wanting more immediately!
I’ve actually been reading this book on and off for 3 months. It was pretty good, but I didn’t really allow myself to get invested because I only picked it up between books I had on hold. With that being said, my rating probs isn’t fair, and I probably would’ve liked it more if I gave it my full attention.
Glad I only paid 99p for this as it got super disjointed and chaotic towards the end. I found myself really struggling to get through and was skimming a lot. It could have been such a good read if it wasn’t so choppy.

Mairi drew me in from the first page! I just kept needing more, more, MORE! Wendolyn writes in a way that easily captivates the reader, leaving them eager to see where the story is going and what's going to happen next. Admittedly, I went in with a bit of an idea of how the story went and what would happen but I still found myself glued to the pages, unwilling to put the book down until it was over (although, real life did call a few times 🤣). I can't wait for Lilith Mason Takes on the Everlore!!
