This book was shockingly thorough for its size. For anyone wanting a detailed yet concise analysis of Napoleon’s many reforms, this is a great work of scholarship. Unfortunately, the brevity that recommends this work also limits it. The facts are stated with little artfulness or flair and the matter-of-fact writing style gets quite dull quite quickly. Similarly, this book lacks deep insight into the matters outside of the facts. There is little serious or original analysis here, just a factual account.

This book has expanded my knowledge and I am grateful to have read it, but I cannot say that I particularly enjoyed it.

a nicely written monograph on napoleon; less of a narrative history and more like a categorical look at napoleon, which is great as a base for research and breaking down the life and influence of napoleon

I DNFd this one. I was hoping to chew through the rest of it on vacation, but its really been a struggle. It's interesting and the author is very knowledgeable, but it reads too much like a textbook for me to enjoy. Maybe bios just aren't for me idk.

A great take on Napoleon judging by it's preface, ignoring all the British Propaganda and Robert B Holtman does a fantastic job at analyzing the true effects of Napoleon's French successes and attacks from the Medieval Europeans.

Dry book lacking in any penetrating in sights. A real missed opportunity.
