When Kenni gets the call that Judge Blackwell was found dead in his chambers nothing will stop her from finding the murderer, not even a wedding dress. During her investigation Kenni finds some buried secrets and some forgotten tunnels that run under the town. Can Kenni keep peace with her mama about the wedding and solve the murder before the trial gets cold?

I love this series, it’s one of my favorites by author Tonya Kappes. Kenni is a smart and dedicated Sheriff, however, she still looks forward to working with her ghost grandpa. I love the chemistry and relationships between the characters, however, Kenni’s relationship with her mama is a typical southern mother daughter relationship which is hilarious at times. The mystery is great. There are plenty of twists and turns and suspects to keep you guessing.

All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.

I took another trip to Cottonwood, Kentucky to see what new problems sheriff Kenni Lowry had to deal with. Thick as Thieves is the 11th adventure in this great fun series by Tonya Kappes. In this one the local judge is found murdered but who did it, and why? Kenni has some good backup now that her fiancé Finn is back on the force but her poppas ghost is also there to help out. I am a sucker for small town mysteries and this is just that and although I normally don't read fantasy this is just enough for me.

Kenni is on the case!
I absolutely enjoyed this installment of A Kenni Lowry Mystery. Thick as Thieves was such a fast paced adventure that honestly kept me guessing. I love all the characters and Kenni and her Momma’s conversations make me laugh out loud. I love the small town charm of Cottonwood and the sense of community. One thing I love about Tonya Kappes, is that she truly makes you feel like you are part of the community/ family with every book. I literally feel like I’m in Cottonwood, chasing leads with the Sheriff!
The ending had an AMAZING reveal, something I did not expect! It makes me look forward to the next one!! I highly recommend checking this series out!

I love Sheriff Kenni Lowry and her ghost grandfather “Poppa”, who solve murders together. Her deputy and fiancé Finn assists her and has her back along with Kenni’s deputy dog Duke.

In this story, a local judge is killed. Kenni and her team have their hands full investigating possible suspects. I was surprised to find out who the killer was and how and why the murder was committed.

While the murder investigation was going on, Kenni’s Mama Vivienne, is busy planning the wedding for Kenni and Finn. This led to some of the funniest scenes in the story.

I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy of this enjoyable story.

I loved this funny southern cozy mystery. I love Kenni, Finn, Duke and Poppa. I enjoyed all the twists and turns as Kenni has help from Finn and Poppa as they solve the murder. I love the small town atmosphere and gossip. I received a copy of the book from the publisher for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

This time the story has an inheritance, secrets, and a locked room murder. The mystery as interesting. I thought it would have a different ending. There is also wedding planning. This part was funny. Her mom, as usual, took things too far.

When Judge Blackwell is found dead in his chambers, everyone is shocked! Who would have the guts to kill a judge?
Kenni is trying to plan her wedding and juggling being a sheriff and dealing with her mother forcing a wedding dress on her that she despises.
The race is on to go through the suspects who have the motive to want the judge dead. The list gets longer, but the killer is someone that you would never suspect! With the help of Poppa and her trusty dog Duke, the hijinks ensue!
If you are looking for quirky characters, small town charm, and southern sass, this is the series you can't live without!

Thick as Thieves is a fabulous addition to the Kenni Lowry series, which I like best of Tonya Kappes’ series! Kenni and Finn are planning their wedding, especially stressful when the bride’s sweet Southern mama wants traditions honored and elegance displayed. I enjoyed many laughs at the results of Vivian’s ideas of a proper wedding. We couldn’t get past even one mystery without Poppa popping in, and now he thinks it is time for Kenni share with her fiancé about Poppa’s ghostly, frequent visits, especially during challenging investigations. He loves to help, protect, and encourage his Kenni-bug. His concerns of being taken away when she marries are lessened by seeing Finn’s love for her.

As sheriff, Kenni doesn’t get a lot of downtime, even to prepare for her wedding. On a bright spring morning, she received a call that Judge Horace Blackwell had been found murdered in his chambers. Judge Blackwell was well-liked in Cottonwood, and was known as being fair and helping give second chances to those who he thought would turn themselves around. It was a shock, then, to know he had been murdered, and worse, to tell his wife and daughter.

As a high-profile case, the mayor pushed hard to get the case solved quickly. Kenni and Finn, who is also her deputy, were on the job, ready to put the killer behind bars. Kenni had the benefit of taking her hound dog, Duke, one of the best gifts Poppa had ever given her. And of course, her spirited Poppa, the former sheriff, was with her through much of the search.

Blackwell’s recent cases needed to be examined for anyone recently sentenced, or just released from prison. One person, allowed to get his affairs in order before being incarcerated, was high on the list. They also became aware of Blackwell’s estranged family member in town who had a huge grudge over how the estate of a family member was handled. Kenni and Finn were up to the challenge of finding the killer, but the most likely suspects had alibis.

The characters demonstrate their personalities very well, even for the first time reader of the series, and it is the characters who make this Southern cozy mystery series a winner for me. Kenni has more smarts and courage than a lot of men in town, as does Finn. Poppa is still a courageous and brilliant, even if ghostly, lawman, another of my favorite characters.

I appreciate how Kenni greets people when she is going through town, genuinely caring about both adults and children. People have been moving there, in part due to lower taxes, and she wants to meet the new neighbors she serves. Poppa and Kenni have a strong, poignant relationship, the envy of those who weren’t close to their grandfathers.

I had considered the real bad guy and their motive throughout, and was quite surprised at how the crime was committed. The ending was very satisfying, and I can’t wait until this couple ties the knot! I highly recommend this to all who like this series and author, well-written Southern cozy mysteries, and the sweet small towns represented by Cottonwood.

From a thankful heart: I read a copy of a pre-publication edition of this novel, and this is my honest review.

This line from the plot summary sums up perfectly Thick As Thieves, book 11 in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappes: “a blend of southern charm, small-town drama, and a jaw-dropping mystery.” I certainly didn’t need to know anymore when I read that line, and oh my gosh, it is spot on!

Sheriff Kenni Lowry is back and should be planning her wedding to fiance and fellow Deputy, Finn, but in the midst of a wedding dress fitting, she’s called to the chamber of Judge Horace Blackwell who has been found murdered. With the help of Finn, her ghostly Poppa and the town of Cottonwood, Kentucky Sheriff Kenni must catch the killer before anyone else is hurt…or worse!

This is such a fast paced mystery that I read in a day and a half (and could have happily read in a day if adulting hadn’t gotten in the way). I found myself laughing out loud several times and then suddenly holding my breath in anticipation of what Kenni might uncover next. (Secrets, so many secrets!) I didn’t guess the killer until the reveal and let me tell you, it’s a humdinger! And the very end of the book has me chomping at the bit for book 12.

In addition to such a strong mystery, the characters make this book. There’s her dad (Poppa) in ghost form, offering advice and serving as a comforting companion, the handsome and supportive Finn, and of course, Kenni’s mom (Momma) who is absolutely hilarious and frustrating and loving in her own way. Being the dog lover that I am, Kenni’s trusty hound, Duke, is my personal favorite. I wanted so much to reach through the pages and scratch his ears.

The descriptions of Cottonwood, Kentucky bring to life the small town and all its charm and sense of community. That’s one of my favorite things about Tonya’s writing – her descriptions and attention to details pull me in and make me feel like I’m actually sitting next to Kenni in her jeep, driving through town, solving a mystery.

Readers new to the series can easily jump in here and be happy knowing they have a delightful backlist of titles available. Whatever you do, don’t snooze on this wonderfully cozy and mysterious escape! My only complaint is that I have to wait for the next book….

Thick As Thieves is the 11th book in the Kenni Lowry Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. It is a humorous, suspenseful cozy mystery featuring a female sheriff protagonist who investigates crimes (murder mysteries) in a small Kentucky town.

I have read quite a few Tonya Kappes books, but this is my first Kenni Lowry Mystery. I am really glad I gave this series a try. I loved the sleuth, the setting, and the supporting characters. It was also interesting to see the sleuth as the sheriff rather than working with a sheriff to solve the case.

Although the protagonist is a sheriff, I would definitely describe this as a cozy mystery. It is not a police procedural or a hard-boiled detective story. The story is lighthearted, set in a cozy community, and balances the suspense with plenty of humor.

The early chapters had me laughing out loud a lot. There were a few humorous exchanges between Sheriff Kenni, who is planning her wedding, and Mama Viv, who has plenty of thoughts about the cake, the dress, and everything in between.

The wedding planning is interrupted early on when the local judge is murdered. Sheriff Kenni starts investigating straight away. Her sidekick is a ghost (her Poppa, also a former sheriff). Poppa gives Kenni lots of suggestions and hints, and they track the killer through hidden tunnels, a poker game, and other more traditional investigation techniques.

I love Sheriff Kenni and can't wait to read more Kenni Lowry Mysteries! Sheriff Kenni is admirable, kind, and committed to her community. The supporting characters are also entertaining and likable. Mama is dramatic and over the top in the best way. Poppa is endearing because you know he is there to help Sheriff Kenni, Duke the hound dog is a cute pet, and Finn the fiancé is solid.

The mystery was suspenseful with a great ending. The story is clearly wrapped up, but at the same time, the last page ends with a line that makes you want to read the next book right away. The next book is Shotgun Wedding, which has a promising name if you're hoping to see Sheriff Kenni walk down the aisle with her steady man, Finn!

This is a great series to jump into. I recommend it to anyone who likes humorous cozies, Southern mysteries, ghostly sidekicks, and just a hint of sweet closed-door romance.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. When a judge is killed, Kenni has to figure out who the culprit is. And she has her wedding to plan, so she is very busy. Poppa and her fiance, Finn, are there to help her but it will not be an easy task to accomplish.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story for the very beginning. The mystery was well plotted and not easily solved.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This series is one of my favorites of all time and I hope there will be lots more.

When a sitting judge is found murdered in his chambers, everyone knows this day is not getting off to a great start. Sheriff Kenni Lowry's arrival at the scene will not soon be forgotten. You will understand when you read it. This scene sticks in my mind, and I start laughing again.

This mystery gets more complex by the minute as long buried secrets are revealed. Never fear because Kenni is a true justice seeker and not being able to solve a case is personal to her. Cottonwood, Texas is not where you want to commit a crime because Kenni and company will get to the bottom of it. She is like a dog with a bone once she starts an investigation, much to the chagrin of her wedding planning mother. It seems her investigations are interfering with mom's plans. How dare someone commit a murder while her mom is planning her daughter's wedding? Her mother is a real hoot.

Even though this is a mystery, there is plenty of humor, southern sayings, characters you will love and sassiness galore. The sharp wit and cracker jack characters will have you laughing out loud. Ghostly Poppa and her dog, Duke, are always good to provide a good laugh. As usual the mystery was fantastic with plenty of moving parts which will keep you on your toes as you follow along. You cannot go wrong with a cozy mystery written by this author. Put this one in the winner column once again.

This 11th book in the Kenni Lowry series is a fantastic addition to the entire series. While Sheriff Kenni is trying on her wedding dress, she gets a call that Judge Horace Blackwell is found murdered in his chambers. Rushing out without changing, she gets to the courthouse to investigate. Her fiance, Detective Finn is there checking out the crime scene and waiting for the coroner. It looks like the judge was struck in the head from behind. With her wedding coming up and mama driving Kenni nuts, she wants to find the murderer as soon as she can. We are taken on a real roller coaster ride, page after page since there is so many possible suspects that have a motive to kill the judge; everything from a newly sentenced person by the judge; a mad relative wanting his inheritance; a lawyer who was seen arguing with the judge and a strange in town. So Kenni has her job cut out for her, but the Ghost Poppa, her trust dog, Duke and Finn, she is on the case. A page turning mystery with a little humor thrown in and Ghost Poppa wanting Kenni to tell Finn about seeing him and the questions left unanswered we can't wait for the next book in this series! I highly recommend not only this book but the entire series. I received an ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Thick As Thieves is another entertaining installment in Kappes' Kenni Lowry mystery series. Kenni is starting to plan for her long awaited wedding to Finn which her mama is ecstatic about. Finding a dress, tasting cakes, and planning hairdos is what her mother has planned for Kenni. However things rarely go as planned especially when a local judge is murdered. Kenni needs to solve a murder mystery right in the middle of wedding planning, and these two tasks are not easy to do at the same time.

Kappes sets up an entertaining read that captures the reader's attention from the very beginning and never lets go. Combining murder, mystery, and humor is one thing Kappes does well especially in this latest installment. I don't usually find myself laughing out loud reading a murder mystery, but this book definitely had me doing that. The book's mystery is well done full of enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. I also loved the character driven parts of the story as well with Kenni pulled in so many different directions. Overall, Thick as Thieves proved to be a great read that I would most definitely recommend. I look forward to reading Kenni's next adventure.

Poor Kenni. Her Mama is trying to make her wedding into the grand Southern wedding of Cottonwood, Kentucky when Kenni and Finn would prefer something less ball gown and high hair. Just as Kenni is trying on the wedding dress that has been in the family and worn by 5 generations of brides, Kenni gets a call on her radio and has to spring into action. A crime has been reported and Kenni can't wait to even change clothes before leaving for the scene. Sheriff Kenni Lowry takes her job and the safety of the residents of Cottonwood very seriously and always puts her work first. The weight of solving the crime is on her shoulders and she won't hesitate to do what is necessary and follow the clues wherever they lead. I love the small town of Cottonwood and it's residents. The writing gives you the feeling of being there following the clues with Kenni and Finn and rooting for them to succeed and to get their happily ever after. I can't wait to see what happens next in Cottonwood.

I received a complimentary copy of this e-book from the author. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Thick as Thieves by Tonya Kappes is a delightful addition to the Kenni Lowry Mysteries series, blending southern charm, humor, and suspense in a perfectly packaged cozy mystery. Set in the quirky town of Cottonwood, Kentucky, the story follows Sheriff Kenni Lowry, who is about to marry her fiancé Finn, only to be thrown into a murder investigation when Judge Horace Blackwell is found dead in his chambers.

Kappes expertly weaves family feuds, a mysterious inheritance, and a buried past into a compelling whodunit, keeping readers engaged with plenty of twists and turns. Kenni’s ghostly Poppa, her loyal hound Duke, and her fiancé provide a solid supporting cast as they navigate a trail that leads through poker games, hidden tunnels, and dark town secrets.

The mystery itself is gripping, with a fast-paced plot and plenty of surprises. Fans of southern cozies will love the witty dialogue, sharp humor, and just the right amount of romance. Thick as Thieves is a fun, lighthearted read that will keep you laughing and guessing until the very end. Perfect for fans of cozy mysteries with a touch of southern flair!

Enjoyable And Entertaining!

I have read several books by this author but this was the first one in this series. I bypassed them because I don't do spooky of any kind, ghosts, paranormal, magic, none of that. I am a big scaredy cat and have actually had to sleep with the lights on to prevent nightmares. But I read a sample and was hooked!

The opening paragraph took me back to my rural roots in southwestern Virginia and brought back such fond memories of my Grandmother, aunts, cousins I had to read it. I enjoyed every minute, enjoyable and charming, with laugh out loud moments. I haven't heard phrases like shinola in years (floor wax that was applied on your hands and knees), and 2 shakes of a lambs tale among others. Kenni's mama was like every southern mama I have ever known, witty, dramatic and always ready with pearls of wisdom and just the right thing to say for any occasion.

The story line was interesting and had me guessing until the end. The wedding dress scenes were hilarious and kept me entertained throughout. And last but not least I actually liked her Poppa and was scared even a little bit. 5 glittering stars! 👏👏🌟🌟💞

It's not every day the local sheriff runs through a courthouse in a bridal gown and cowboy boots. But when you're Kenni Lowry, crime comes before wedding planning. When a popular local judge is found murdered in his chambers, Sheriff Kenni literally runs from a gown fitting to the crime scene. Who whacked the judge with his own gavel? Why? Is it the lawyer? The nephew? The heavily sentenced offender?  With her ever-present ghostly Poppa, her deputy/fiance Finn, and faithful hound Duke, can Kenni uncover some literally buried clues?

As always, the Kenni Lowry series gives us a slice of Southern small-town life and the requisite characters. Ms. Kappes weaves a tapestry of puzzles, secrets, humor, and a touch of romance that portrays a perfect cozy mystery. Each clue leads to more questions that result in a surprise solution. I usually have a decent idea how things will pan out, but not this time. There's a conclusion that no one will see coming! I can't wait for the next installment!!!

Thick as Thieves is book 11 in the Kenni Lowry series. A murdered judge disrupts wedding planning for Kenni, the local Sheriff in Cottonwood, KY. The death was horrific enough, but the sheer amount of evil that oozes out of the walls in this small town is enough to choke a person. Filled with feuds, finances, and secrets, Kenni finds herself flitting all over Cottonwood trying to pin down a suspect.

I enjoyed Thick as Thieves. I’m a fan of books with supernatural elements and having Poppa’s ghost help Kenni is a fun aspect. Having her grandfather back in her life must have been exciting and wonderful but not being able to hug him must have been torture. Poppa proves to be quite the asset to Kenni as she investigates and attempts to analyze the clues and piece everything together.

World-building and character development continues in Thick as Thieves. I enjoyed the characters and their involvement in this book. Enjoyable and interesting, this cozy mystery pulled me in and kept me engaged. The mystery was intricate and wonderfully woven through the pages.

And that ending!!

Oh i love Kenni and she has so much to do with her mother alone so when an investigation happens while preparation for wedding is done she is overwhelmed.
Kenni love her job as a sheriff she wants to protect the city; i love her persistence and loyalty really it's great even if she has her Poppa's help because keeping a ghost secret is far from easy.....
She still thinks sometimes that marrying Finn she is losing Poppa but she still wants happiness and Finn is supportive even if he knows she has a secret and her dog is acting strange....

However the murder of a judge takes priority and she must solves it quickly to keep the population calm....with several suspects investigation is not too easy but with Finn, Duke and Poppa she is ready for the task.....
What she was not ready for is for Poppa to take some decision of its own

really this one was great and such a cliffhanger ....i can't wait for next book for sure

Welcome to book 11 in The Sherrif Kenni Lowry series

Kenni & Finn should starting to plan their wedding, but then Judge Blackwell has to go and get himself killed.

Kenni shows up at the murder scene in a very “interesting” outfit, to the horror of her mother, and the laughing of the community(honestly, it’s pretty funny!)

As Kenni & Finn investigate (Finn is back as her Deputy, so all is back as it should be) and try to start planning a wedding, Ghostly Poppa is still around.

There are multiple suspects and I guessed this one pretty quick after an interview.

As Kenni tries to have a girls night, which includes trying on wedding dresses, she discovers who the killer is, and makes a mad dash (seriously) to catch the killer.

If you had not figured it out by then, once the clues are revealed, it will add up

The book ends on a very shocking note, that even had me speechless (and that’s pretty hard to do!)

The book releases 2/23/25

Thank you to Tonya and her team for the ARC!

A sheriff in a wedding dress solving a murder makes for an interesting murder mystery. This cozy murder mystery will leave you guessing who the suspect is until the very end. Judge Horace is murdered in his chambers, sending Kenni Lowry, the sheriff, into a wild goose chase to find the murderer.

Kenni is in the process of planning her wedding with Finn, and her mother wants her to have a proper southern wedding. I had many laughs throughout the encounters with Kenni and her mom.

I enjoyed having Poppa (the ghost of Kenni's grandfather) stopping by to help Kenni figure out the murder. He is a wonderful addition to the storyline. He is funny and provides guidance when Kenni most needs it.

Tonya's murder mystery was well planned with multiple suspects. Each one has a motive to want Judge Horace dead. She mixed in Kenni's wedding plans with her sheriff's responsibilities, making the story entertaining. You will be shocked to find out who the real killer is.

Wow, what a great book to the series! If your ready for small town get ready. This takes place in Cottonwood and I felt like I was part of the town. Sheriff Kenni should be thinking of her preparations for her wedding but the Judge has been murdered! It's going to take time and with the help of Poppa showing up when he needs to.
The characters in this book are funny and all around quirky. It makes for great reading. I had to just keep reading to find out what happens next. Hang on tight because the ending will shock you. I didn't see that coming. Also with Poppa being a ghost and only Kenni can see him he decides on a decision at the very end.
Tonya Knappes did not disappoint in this one. Cozy up with a hot drink and get settled in Cottonwood. You will feel right at home.

I was given an ARC and leave this review voluntary.

This is the 11th book in this delightful southern cozy mystery series. I’ve read and loved all of the previous books, but this book would stand alone fine. It’s such a fabulous series, though, that I really recommend reading the whole series. Kenni is such a great main character and the writing is so funny. I’m thrilled that Kenni and Finn will finally be getting married soon—in addition to the mystery that’s in each book, there’s the mystery of Kenni’s deceased Poppa and whether she’ll continue seeing his ghost after she gets married. He’s been helping her solve crimes, but now she has Finn. They both help her solve the murder in this book—it’s a bit convoluted, with many potential suspects, but it’s really fun to try to solve it along with Kenni. I received an ARC, which I appreciate, but these opinions are my own.

Although I have not read all the previous novels in this series, this storyline was easy to follow. Author Tonya Kappes does an excellent job with all her books that makes them read well as standalones. As someone who's a bit OCD about reading series in order, this gives me relief.
Kenni Lowry is the sheriff in the small town of Cottonwood, Kentucky.Just when Kenni is about to marry her fiancé Finn, a judge is murdered in his chambers. Kenni finds out this murder involves many different issues and secrets. She hopes with the help of her dog Duke, the ghost of her Poppa (grandfather) and Finn that she can solve the case before another murder happens and she can proceed with her wedding.
There is lots of suspense intermixed with humor and the supernatural. This novel will keep you completely entertained and looking more books by this awesome author.

Oh boy, Kenni has her hands full right now! Her Mama is pressuring her to get the wedding planned, and someone has murdered the local judge right in his very chamber with his very own gavel. Luckily, Kenni has her fiancé Finn and her ghostly deputy, Poppa, to help sort through the suspects. Her list of suspects is as long as her potential wedding veil if her Mama has her way! Could it be a local lawyer, someone he recently passed judgment on, or a family member? Kenni has a mountain of clues and suspects to sort through this time. And to complicate matters, the true murderer seems to be almost invisible. How does that even happen? You'll be taken on quite a ride with Kenni, Poppa, and of course, Duke. But hold on to your hat for that ending—it's going to leave you absolutely speechless!

Planning a wedding when your intrusive mother who insists on helping has Sheriff Kenni Lowry almost pulling her hair. Getting a call that a body has been found keeps Kenni from saying something to her mother that she would later regret. What a shame that a murder is giving Kenni time away from wedding planning and keeping her sane. When her ghost-Poppa appears Kenni knows that with his help she will find the killer. I adore this series with diligent, hard-working Kenni, her fiancé and deputy Finn, loving ghost-grandfather Poppa, and her demanding Mama. I am not sure when the wedding will take place, but I look forward to attending. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

Cottonwood Kentucky has that quaint small town charm that dreams are made of until you see the Sheriff running through the courthouse in her wedding dress. Sheriff Kenni Lowry is going thru the excruciating planning of her wedding with her Mama. Kenni and her mama are at a dress fitting for Kenni with her five generation old wedding dress when a frantic call comes in to get to the courthouse immediately. Kenni takes off to the courthouse wedding dress and all to find Judge Horace Blackwell murdered in his chambers. It will take everything Kenni has along with help from her sidekicks, Duke, Ghost Poppa and Finn to try to solve the murder and along the way find some shocking buried "literally buried" secrets in the town. Another home run for Tonya Kappes.
