Jenny is a child who appears outside a village primary school one day. Nobody can establish any details of her history, other than that she has been seriously neglected. She is adopted by a childless local couple, Peter and Claire. Claire has been desperate for a child for many years but she struggles to connect with the strange, precocious, little girl. The story that unfolds is told from different viewpoints, including those of Jenny, Peter and Claire.
