Henry VIII is famously known for his six marriages. His efforts for the annulment of his first marriage led to the separation of the Church of England from Papal authority. He was continually on the verge of financial ruin due to his extravagant lifestyle. In this book, Simon Court describes his life in detail.

A well written, concise overview of the life of Henry VIII that led to the tragic separation of the Church of England from the Church of Rome. The more the story of his life unfolds, the more unsettling it becomes. The author at one point even compares king Henry's behavior to that of a psychopath...
I've often wondered how members of the Anglican church look at the origin story of their separation from the papacy.
The history of the Catholic Church has many dark pages, and throughout the centuries, a number of her priests, bishops and popes have done awful things. But to have someone as disturbing as Henry VIII as the 'founding father' of a church that severed the communion with the rest of the church *because* of the king's moral choices instead of theological differences appears very problematic to me.
Nevertheless, God has often worked wonders despite the many failures and sins of his own people. Maybe this is just one of these cases. I continue to pray for growing communion between the churches that parted ways in the past. Because this book makes it very clear how tragic and maybe unnecessary this separation ultimately was.

O postaci angielskiego króla Henryka VIII krążą legendy, powszechnie wiadomo iż kazał obciąć głowy swoim żonom, ze względu na to iż nie mogły mu dać męskiego potomka. Również powszechnie wiadomo iż Henryk VIII nie mogąc uzyskać rozwodu od papieża postanowił założyć własny kościół anglikański, niezależny do Rzymu. Po przesłuchaniu tej krótkiej pozycji zrozumiałem, że to co dotychczas wiedziałem na temat życia Henryka VIII to były powiedzmy otwarcie półprawdy.
Henrzk VIII rzeczywiście był popadał w konfikt ze swoimi żonami. JEdnak, nie tak po prostu ścinał im głowy. Nie ścinał głowy każdej następnej żonie, tak jak mnie się wydawało. Wśród jego żon były również kobiety które kochał, jedna nawet umarła przedwcześnie i z powodu jej śmierci przechodził on przez kilkuletni okres ciężkiej żałoby. Jednak niestety dwie żony miały tego pecha, że straciły głowę, będąc osądzone o zdradę. Egzekucja odbywała się w świetle prawa i aparat państowy został uruchomiony, łącznie z kanclerzem który całą sprawę załatwiał organizacyjnie. Niestety ów dwie pechowe żony które straciły głowy nie dały któlowi męskiego potomka a w dodatku jedna z nich zdradziła króla z innym mężczyzną i została na tym przyłapana. Henryk VIII mając obsesję na temat posiadania męskiego potomka częściowo zrealizował swój cel i umierając pozostawił po sobie męskiego następcę, syna kilkuletniego Edwarda, który jednak kilka lat po śmierci swojego ojca zmarł w wieku 15 lat. Córki Henryka VIII przejęły po nim tron. Szczególnie Elżbieta I wpisała się mocno w historie królestwa angielskiego, jako żelazna królowa przez kilkadziesiąt lat rządziła królestwem angielskim. Jednak na niej dynastia Tudorów zakończyła swoją linię. Umarła bezpotomnie.
Z oderwaniem się od Rzymu było to też trochę bardziej skomplikowane. Rzeczywiście Henryk VIII był mocno niezadowolony z tego iz papież nie reagował na jego prośby rozwodowe. Z drugiej strony Henryk VIII był człowiekiem nie do końca akceputującym pewne rytuały kościoła rzymskiego, w tym kult świetych czy też kult relikwi. Nie podobała mu się również silna pozycja kościoła, biskpustw i klasztorów w jego królestwie. Majątek kościoła przekraczał ponad połowę całości powierchni królestwa. Henryk VIII dzięki wsparciu szlachty przeprowadził reformy majątkowe całkowicie likwidując majątki kościelne, klasztorne, przejmując ten majątek na rzecz korony, przy okazji również porozdawał sporo tego majątku szlachcie. Dzięki tej reformie wykształciła się silna arystokracja w królestwie angielskim co na pewno miało wpływ na dalszy rozwój arystokracji oraz wzmocnienie jej w ramach struktur społecznych. Henryk VIII w pewien sposób zachwiał strukturą feudalną w królestwie angielskim.

Like most of the History in an Hour series, this is a great overview with just enough detail to provide an idea without getting overloaded. They almost remind me of a classroom lecture on a particular topic. For someone interested in the basics, these books are perfect. If you were interested in the nitty gritty details these books are not for you.
This particular title focuses on an overview of one of history's most notorious kings, Henry VIII. More detailed than what is covered in a history textbook, but not as detailed as a full book devoted to the king. This focuses on the man more than on his wives and devotes time to his quest for an heir, his political ambitions, his passion for courtly romance, and more. An enjoyable read overall.

My boyfriend and I listened to this audiobook while we were driving. I know quite a bit about Henry VIII and that time period but he does not. He learned quite a bit from it and was very intrigued and entertained (he usually isn't a reader or an audiobook listener). I found it interesting and informative. It was a quick listen. I would have liked more info on each of his wives but the audiobook was only an hour long.

This book is a good starting place for a general and short biography into the Tudor king. However, if you know anything about Henry VIII you'll likely know everything already mentioned in this book.

Henry VIII av Simon Court
"History in an hour" är ett härligt sätt att lära sig historia på. Nu har jag inte bara läst den här boken om Henrik VIII, utan många fler faktaböcker. Jag tycker det är fantastiskt att man kan få in så mycket fakta på såpass kort tid.
En bra historiebok om Henrik VIII som ger dig precis det du behöver veta om kungen med sex hustrur. Rekommenderar den varmt.
