Jake didn't think his sexuality was a big deal, until it was time to tell his mother, a devout Christian with traditional beliefs. The happiness that once resided in Jake begins to slowly die with every condescending word spewed by his mother, and it doesn't take long before Jake falls completely into a black abyss where recovery is near impossible.*Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award quarter finalist.
A unique look inside the dark and sometimes twisted mind of a young man trying to come to terms with his own sexuality while also coping with the inevitable response from his Christian mother. But it doesn't end there, and that's where I truly appreciate this book. You get to see the main character go off to college, fall in love, and survive an abusive relationship. I also like that it's not all about how the world pushed the character down, but how he fought back. A quick read in that you want to know what happens next. A beautiful story in that you watch several relationships begin, change, end and grow.
Though this isn't typically what I read, it was recommended. I found it to be very raw and powerful in what the main character goes through and the paths he chooses.
