The second book in the series switched character POV and became much more of a quest. The Band is also battling a new foe, relationships are changing and it kept me engaged in wanting to know how the book would end.
Things heat up in book 2 as we learn more about the different groups interested in Persephone, Rosemary, and Ethan. Rosemary still has to work with Ethan because he has her birthright in his body, and Persephone is more complex a person than either she or Ethan suspected. It's a hair-raising adventure as the three fight bad guys and stumble through a world that is more magical and more complicated than we ever knew.
I enjoyed the first one a lot, but this one (the second in the series, Songs of the Ascendant,) is even better. At times it feels like a high octane mad dash for our protagonists to simply not fall before the forces of evil.
The stakes get higher, the villain more mysterious, and more characters are introduced... some with questionable motivations. Evenly-paced with fun action scenes and dialogue/encounters to keep the story moving along, by the end I was a little surprised at the people I ended up rooting for.
