Did I finish this book in 24 hours? Yes, Ma'am, I did!
Oh my. Where to start this gush of emotion that will loosely be called a 'review'?!?
Nate and Eloise are brilliant characters. Their story is so real, heartfelt, swoony, and angsty, all at once, and I effing loved every minute of it!
Nate James, former sports star, has returned to Wattle Junction a changed man. Quiet and introspective, he's trying to kick-start a new life post-professional-football, as a writer. With references to his former life, we see a completely different side to the man he is now, and we're left wondering why he's so shut down and scared to take up space. Of course, this is all explored, and I loved the way the idea of 'being the main character of your own story' comes to the fore.
Eloise is Nate's best friend's sister. She's always been there, but when he returns to Wattle Junction, she's THERE, and their mutual attraction is undeniable. Everyone knows it, gossips about it, wants them to see it for themselves, and the scenes where they enter the pub and the whole room goes quiet is just so relatably small-town, it made me ache for home.
The slow unfurling of this love story is like watching a loaf of bread bake - and as Nate as a baker, this metaphor holds up. Once that loaf is done, settling on the counter all hot and steamy, well, then it's ready to enjoy. This story is the same. The spice, their relationship, grows and grows, super sexy and spicy and *oops, I burned my breakfast because my head was in the bath with the characters instead of in the kitchen with my French Toast*
The entire James clan is family goals. Four brothers anyone would love to have. And Joanie! What a delight! Cheeky grannies are my favourite! And OMG the rabbit! I was in fits of laughter!
Overall, I must say, this small town romance is perfection. Emma makes reading so effortless and enjoyable, and I can't wait to be back in Wattle Junction again soon!
