Things aren’t always what they seem. Everyone in Wattle Junction knows about shy social worker Eloise Hamilton’s dream to travel the world. But here’s the the idea of leaving the small town she’s long called home makes her nauseous. So does the fact that her career to-do list is getting bigger by the day, her brother’s ridiculously over-the-top wedding is rapidly approaching and the only guy she’s ever wanted sees her as nothing more than a friend.
It’s also widely known that retired professional athlete-turned-author Nate James craves a quiet life. So what if he can’t keep his gaze off his best friend’s little sister. Nothing can ever happen with Eloise for so many reasons, especially when his new life is built on secrets. He’s determined to learn how to be content with what he has and stop dreaming about what—or who—he really wants.
But when new opportunities arise and circumstances keep throwing them together, can these two find a way to become the main characters in the love story they’ve always wished for?
I love a story about the title within a book, it's rare but when it's done well it gives me all the feels. Emma nailed that.
This was one of my most anticipated reads this year after loving The Reality of Us more than I expected (thriller reader dabbling in romance...) and it was worth the wait!
The first chapter-ish I did have issues recalling characters - a me problem not a book problem because I'm one of those finish and forget details people - but it soon came rushing back, the characters I love featured and so many laughs and awkward middle aged mum moments were a hit.
Importantly, the romance side was fantastic. Nate and Eloise's story is so sweet - a friends to lovers trope and with Nate's ex football star fame and other personal issues (no spoilers) it was extremely engaging and emotional.
Would absolutely recommend this book to romance readers, or even those who aren't but are looking for something wholesome.
Anticipated publication date: 29 May 2024.
⚠️ Author has included TWs at start of book ⚠️
Thanks to the author for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a brother’s best friend, friends to lovers, forced proximity romance set in a small town in Australia.
The FMC, Eloise, was adorable and both her and the MMC, Nate, were always helping others out. He is so sweet and swoon-worthy. The chemistry between them was perfect. She falls first, but he falls harder🥹
I loved all the characters except Eloise’s dance partner (ugh). Also Joanie, Eloise’s granny was the best! And the banter between her and Lulu was chef’s kiss.
There were some sensitive topics but they were portrayed perfectly.
It’s a beautifully written book with just the right amount of spice, drama and slow burn. It was a cute, funny and swoony romance with a great ending and I would highly recommend it.
☆ ARC Review for The Story Of Us by Emma Mugglestone ☆
If you want a swoon-worthy, laugh-out-loud, and spicy small-town romance with two friends who turn into lovers. Look no further and go to Wattle Junction in Australia!
It has all of my favorite tropes: 🧡 Friends to lovers, small town, forced proximity, she falls first he falls harder 🧡 I enjoyed this book so much! Nate & Eloise are like a match made in heaven and you know it from the first second you start reading. It's like a warm Australian blanket that's wrapped around your body. I adored every single character in this book. Eloise and her love for Nate, Nate and his cute dog Echo..
It makes me all mushy inside! I loved this book so much and I can not wait for a new adventure in Wattle Junction! 💙💙
After absolutely loving the previous books in the Wattle Junction series, I was beyond excited to be lucky enough to receive an ARC of this beauty 😍 it was a slower burn for me but I loved the emotional roller coaster it took me on. The cover is so cute and the doggy companions are also so adorable 🥰
It was the perfect mix of sweet and spicy, and I really loved the inclusion of art therapy as a medium for supporting us through difficult times. This book felt like a warm hug, and it must have been all the cosy nights spent with our main characters in forced proximity 🙈🔥
What you can expect: 💜 Friends to lovers 💚 Small town romance 💜 Sassy side characters 💚 Brothers best friend
Emma is definitely one to watch and one I would highly encourage supporting this indie author 🥰
Thank you so much to @emma.mugglestone for sending me an e-book to review 🙏🏻
I so enjoyed the first trip to Wattle Junction in The Reality of Us that I HAD to get in on the ARC for the second book in this series!
We’re back in Wattle Junction for the story of Nate and Eloise 💙 He’s an ex-NFL player back in his Australian hometown and she’s his best friend’s sister who is a social worker with big plans.
The story is told in 3rd person which I usually don’t prefer, but let me tell you, Emma knows how to tell a story. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything and was drawn into both MC worlds.
To see Nate and Eloise move from secret pining, to a fling during a chaotic time, to wanting more and then figuring out how to navigate the end game was so easy and enjoyable. I loved that they were working on who they were individually but also who they were together.
The side cast was just as great here as they were in the first book. The brothers, the grandmas, love them all 🩷
If you want a love story that will draw you in and keep you there until the end, this is for you.
🇦🇺 Forced Proximity 🇦🇺 Some Spicy Coaching 🇦🇺 🌶️🌶️ 🇦🇺 Athlete/Author 🇦🇺 Small Town 🇦🇺 Friends to Lovers
Thank you to Emma Mugglestone for the ARC opportunity!
This was such a fun small town, friends to lovers romance.
Eloise is a social worker who also uses art to connect with her clients and dreams of adventure outside of the small Australian town of Wattle Junction. She also dreams of kissing hers brother’s best friend Nate.
Nate is an ex NFL player who retired young and now pours his energy into writing a very successful book series. He keeps to himself and is the quiet observer type of MMC, always watching Eloise but knowing she is off limits.
This was such a fun slow burn to open door spice read where Eloise falls first, but Nate falls harder. He bakes her bread every morning for goodness sake *swoon*.
The side characters were prefect. They were cheeky, laugh out loud funny and so supportive.
Thank you Emma for the opportunity to read this prior to release on the 29th of May.
My review: Eloise, totally relatable, Nate, the typical Aussie! I find thoroughly enjoyed the story of Eloise and Nate and friends Alice, and Nate’s brothers ! Every moment I read more I felt that this story, was cute and funny and very enjoyable.
Loved this book, great friends to lovers, I think we could all relate to Eloise. Nate is so dreamy and everyone would love Joanie as their grandmother. You feel like you are right there in Wattle Junction and it's so hard to put down.
Before starting the review, I would like to thank Emma for giving me the opportunity to read TSOU. This is my second time being an ARC reader for her, and I was filled with joy to witness one more James brother getting their happy ending🫶🏻🥹
Now for the review part.
Holy shit! I loved this book🤭🤭🤭 Nate and Eloise have been friends for a long time; he is also her brother’s best friend, which means a forbidden romance. She is off limits.
The characters were secretly pining for each other forever, but not only this, they were also navigating their way through life; they both had some fears to overcome and to take a step toward a new change.
Even though it was a romantic comedy with small town shenanigans, I appreciate Emma for how she wrote the main characters; their hardship felt real, the emotions were raw, and it hit close to reality. I saw myself in Eloise, and it felt validating to see a character who sort of thinks alike and shares the same struggles.
Joanie was my favorite character😭😭😭she was the life of every party and gathering. I loved her so much that I wished to get teleported to Wattle Junction so I could meet her🥹🥹🥹She gets five stars from me for her share.
If you are looking for a fun romance between friends and lovers who have longed for each other forever, The Story of Us could be your next read✨✨🦋🦋
Wow!!! I read this book in a day...it grabbed me right from the start... I laughed, I cried...it was beautiful 😍 It just felt real and made me feel like I was right there with them all. I absolutely adore Eloise and Joanie is fantastic!! This book touches on a few all too real topics and shows how we don't always handle things as well as we should. It also shows how you can handle absolutely anything with the right person by your side. Eloise and Nate are both struggling internally with Ghosts from their pasts and keeping their demons/ personal struggles a secret... This is just such a beautiful story and I cannot recommend it enough ❤️
Looking forward to reading more about Wattle Junction!!!
💚Brother’s best friend 💚Retired professional athlete turned author 💚Friends to lovers 💚Forced proximity 💚Small town 💚She falls first, he falls harder
This was a very well laid out story with great characters that developed as people throughout the pages. I hadn’t read a book by Emma going into this but I was not disappointed in the slightest, the writing was perfect for a contemporary romance. It had great banter, plenty of laughs, the perfect amount of spice and enough drama to keep it interesting without being overbearing. Not to mention the best dog called Echo ☺️
I can’t wait to see what’s next to come in the Wattle Junction universe. Emma is a great go to author for those sweet romantic comedy book needs.
Get ready to swoon! Emma Mugglestone has created a beautiful small town in Australia for this sweeping friends to lovers romance. I love that Nate is an ex NFL player turned author with a hit series but doesn’t care to be in the spotlight. Eloise is just trying to make the town better with her work as a social worker. Navigating their changing relationship comes with its up and downs and a little baggage. Nate doesn’t think he’s good enough for Eloise and it broke my heart over the reason why. Be ready to laugh, to cry and read some spice!
Voluntary review of a free ARC of The Story of Us.
This was a cozy romance book that definitely pulled at my heartstrings. Emma Mugglestone’s writing is so easy to get into making this a quick read for me. I really enjoy a friends to lovers romance and Emma Mugglestone delivered. The relationship between Eloise and Nate was so authentic and that made me love them even more. The friendships and other relationships throughout this book has me adding all of Emma’s other work to my TBR!
Wow! What a ride that was 😍 this small town, friends to lovers romance was exactly that! Eloise and Nate are the cutest friends but are perfect lovers. The writing in this had me feeling so many feelings and there were even a couple of tears.
I’m so glad Eloise and Nate got their HEA and I can’t wait to read which of the James brothers story will be told next.
“Never be afraid to bet on yourself”
“Lead the way, Tiger. We’ve got an ending to write together.”
It’s great to be back in Wattle Junction. I love this place.
The Story of Us follows the love story of Nate and Eloise. They are very much in the friends zone which neither of them want to be in but cannot voice that to one another.
Nate early retired from the NFL and doesn’t want to live the life he had anymore but it just seems to keep finding him. Eloise is a dedicated social worker wants to go on a grand adventure but cannot find the courage to back herself.
I adored Nate and Eloise’s friendship and dynamics. I especially loved seeing two people who are both trying to discover what they really want in both life and love but they’re also so relatable.
Look forward to more Wattle Junction adventures in the future.
Such a cute story! I love Nate! It was so realistic as well, something that could actually happen in real life. Beautifully written. I can’t wait to hear more stories from the Wattle Junction community 🫶🏻
Eloise and Nate had a crush on each other for many years, despite Nate living in the USA for a few years, playing NFL Football.
Nate’s best friend, Charlie is Eloise’s brother, and both are very mindful of Charlie’s warning to Nate, not to hurt his sister. On his return from the US, Nate turned to writing, and helped out at a community facility, coaching children in sports. Eloise was also at the facility, and was a social worker and art therapist.
This is a lovely story of two friends who grew up in the same town, with close family ties. I loved how their relationship was a slow burn, but with each holding back secrets from the other. This is very much a family story, with Nate’s bothers, and his friend Charlie involved, as the run up to Charlie’s wedding unfolds. However, we all know that the course of true love never runs smooth, but that Love will out in the end, despite there being many ups and downs along the way. I especially loved that Eloise came into her own, and took the lead in their relationship, and that Nate’s brothers supported him when he divulged his worst secret. I cried happy tears at the end, and if I could award more than 5 stars, I would.
I received an advance review copy for free, and am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
This is my third book read in the Wattle Junction series. Just like the previous two I savoured every page. This one is my favourite so far.
The author has created a believable small Australian town world, that is a delight to be immersed in. Nate and Eloise the main characters as well as all of the characters are so well crafted. It’s written with so much heart and the spicy bits didn’t disappoint.
My favourite character was Joanie, the grandmother. I want to be like her when I grow up. :)
Thank you to the author for my ARC copy of this book. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.

Thank you to The Author Emma Mugglestone for an advanced reader copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review.
Did I finish this book in 24 hours? Yes, Ma'am, I did!
Oh my. Where to start this gush of emotion that will loosely be called a 'review'?!?
Nate and Eloise are brilliant characters. Their story is so real, heartfelt, swoony, and angsty, all at once, and I effing loved every minute of it!
Nate James, former sports star, has returned to Wattle Junction a changed man. Quiet and introspective, he's trying to kick-start a new life post-professional-football, as a writer. With references to his former life, we see a completely different side to the man he is now, and we're left wondering why he's so shut down and scared to take up space. Of course, this is all explored, and I loved the way the idea of 'being the main character of your own story' comes to the fore.
Eloise is Nate's best friend's sister. She's always been there, but when he returns to Wattle Junction, she's THERE, and their mutual attraction is undeniable. Everyone knows it, gossips about it, wants them to see it for themselves, and the scenes where they enter the pub and the whole room goes quiet is just so relatably small-town, it made me ache for home.
The slow unfurling of this love story is like watching a loaf of bread bake - and as Nate as a baker, this metaphor holds up. Once that loaf is done, settling on the counter all hot and steamy, well, then it's ready to enjoy. This story is the same. The spice, their relationship, grows and grows, super sexy and spicy and *oops, I burned my breakfast because my head was in the bath with the characters instead of in the kitchen with my French Toast*
The entire James clan is family goals. Four brothers anyone would love to have. And Joanie! What a delight! Cheeky grannies are my favourite! And OMG the rabbit! I was in fits of laughter!
Overall, I must say, this small town romance is perfection. Emma makes reading so effortless and enjoyable, and I can't wait to be back in Wattle Junction again soon!
Nate + Eloise Emma Mugglestone takes us to Wattle Junction for this beautiful friends to lovers story. I simply adored this book that was a touch angsty, a little spicy, swoon-worthy, occasionally frustrating and at times hilarious. Did someone say secret pining? Nate and Eloise have both had feelings for each other for quite some time. Eloise the sweet and shy social worker never thought she stood a chance with Nate the uber handsome ex professional athlete now turned author. And.... Nate has worked hard to keep his feeling for Eloise locked up tight. Not only is she his best friends little sister but due to his past and personal reasons he doesn't think he deserves her.
Instantly you can tell these two are soul mates, so you can't help but love the journey as they finally give in to was was inevitable. During this story they share soooo many moments. Some sweet, some spicy, some hilarious and some a little frustrating/angsty. Ok... so maybe only frustrating for me because I just wanted them to reach that HEA ASAP.. But.... I know, I know is it a romance without a little frustrating push and pull?
Some of the side characters made this just that little more special. Of course Echo, Nate's dog and I can't forget Eloise's grandmother Joanie and her Old Girls Gossip Brigade. OMG Joanie had me laughing out loud at times! I absolutely adored her.
I love this little small town Emma has created and can't wait for more of this world and characters. 5 I highly recommend stars!!!
🇦🇺Eloise has lived her whole life in Wattle Junction, a small town outside Melbourne, Australia. She is a social worker at the local community centre while studying towards her Masters degree and setting up the art therapy classes at the centre.
🏈She’s been in love with Nate, her brother Charlie’s best friend and a former NFL player for ages. While she suspects Nate feels the same way, something is holding both of them back from being honest with their feelings.
💒With Charlie’s wedding to a socialite coming up, there are plenty of opportunities for the pair to spend time together. But when things warm up between the two, can Nate be honest about his past with Eloise?
📚I adored Emma Mugglestone’s debut The Reality of Us, and her prequel novella Wattle It Be?, and was excited to read the next instalment in this series. Nate is the brother of Owen in The Reality of Us, and we get to see his POV both as a character in the story, but also his feelings about his past, his experience as a writer and his biggest secret. Without giving away spoilers, I appreciated that Nate’s shame related to something seldom discussed in stories or in real life. I adored how supportive both Nate and Eloise’s families are, and there was no big deal made about Nate and Charlie being friends. Recommend reading the earlier books in the series (just because they are so well written) and not because this story can’t read well as a standalone!
Read an eARC copy courtesy of Booksirens and the author My rating 4/5 - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Pub date 29 May 2024
What a great book it has just about every emotion, mishap and unexpected feelings. From start to finish I didn't want to put this down. Eloise is a social worker at Kathleen's Place, but now she was actually holding art therapy classes and enjoying how much of a difference they was making. Helping her family was always her top priority, she was always helping somebody and never really following her own dreams. Something always came first now its her brother's over the top wedding. Who actually has a month long pre-wedding engagements. Now she hoped with Nate being best man things might just happen between them, she just was brave enough to make the first move. Not when he had been so famous and been with models, actresses and who knows who. Why would he be interested in a plain Jane like her. Nate was happy being back in Australia and having left the NFL, he'd been home two years now but still people talked and printed stuff about him without actually knowing the real him. All he wanted was a normal quiet life, but unless he was prepared to share his secrets he'd never truly be able to have the relationship with Eloise me wanted. This is a complex story with each of the main characters needing to grow and accept who they truly are. There's plenty of laughter and a few hold your breath moments but it's really worth the read I don't think it's a book I'll forget. I really think there's quite a few of us who can relate to the story in many different ways.
Shy social worker Eloise Hamilton has had a crush on Nate James for a long time. But the former professional-athlete-turned-author only ever wanted to be her friend.
Nate has been keeping his life as private and small as possible. Dreaming about Eloise needs to be enough, when there are so many reasons for not giving in to his attraction to his best friends' sister.
But when circumstances throw them together time and time again, will they be able to let go of the past and be brave enough to start a future together?
Such a joy, to be back in the small town of Wattle Junction. I missed the James family and the Old Girls Gossip Brigade so much!!
Eloise and Nate are so different, yet so similar characters, always helping out others, putting themselves last, trying to make a difference for the people in Wattle Junction. There are many ups and downs in their love story, but Nate is trying so hard to open up and let Eloise in.
"The Story of Us" is a beautiful, gentle story of two people trying hard to become the main character in their own stories and finding each other in the process.
If you want to laugh (the Old Girls, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them), swoon, cry, fan yourself and sigh happily, when all turns out right in the end, then please, please, PLEASE put "The Story of Us" on your TBR.
What a perfect follow up to the first book of this series. I was so excited to continue with the next brother’s story and I was not dissapointed.
This time we are captured by Nate and Eloise’s whirlwind of a love story.
Nate is an ex professional football player, returning from living in the states. After a bit of a rough time overseas he wants to return to his simple and quiet life in Wattle Junction. Eloise has been smitten by Nate for years now, but always scared to make a move since he is her brother’s best friend. She never believes he would share the same feeling towards his best fiends little sister.
Again this book is in third person which is not normal my thing, but Emma does it so well.
Nate is the sweetest MMC I have read all year. I connected with him so much throughout this book. He is so hard on himself and always puts others first, keeping his guard held up high. The way he supports Eloise and her dreams absolutely melted my heart.
The chemistry between these two is so beautiful and I was drawn in right from the beginning. Again we see the side characters shine in this one. Joanie, Eloise’s grandmother had me giggling along each time she was featured. She is full of life and so witty throughout. I can’t wait to return to Wattle Junction to continue with this family.
It is the second book in the Wattle Junction series, and I would say it is an interconnected standalone! I didn't read the first one and I loved it and didn't feel like I missed anything.
The FMC Eloise is a sweetheart and just trying to make the town better with her work has a social worker. I really loved the use of art therapy as a medium to help through difficult times. The MMC Nate hurt from the past but always there to help people out. He also makes bread from scratch just for fun! Do I need to say more, I don't think so 🤭
Their chemistry is beautiful. It's a cozy love but with great spice! We could sense the attraction for each other from the beginning, and I was getting frustrated for them to be together asap lol. They both individually had stuggles to overcome, and I loved the way they tackled it and supported one another. However, my faves are the side characters! The people in the small town, particularly Joanie, are incredibly funny, cheeky, and supportive. To me, they really made the story complete without them it wouldn't have been the same.
If you are looking for a beautiful swoony friends to lovers story with open door spice, it is for you 💕
Tropes 🐇Small town 🐇Brother's best friend 🐇Friends to lovers 🐇She falls first, he falls harder 🐇Forced proximity 🐇Slow burn
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this arc ❤️ (all opinions are mine)
This is the third installment of the Wattle Junction Series. Eloise is completing her Master’s degree in social work and working at the local community center teaching art therapy in Wattle Junction, Australia.
Nate is a retired 🏈 player in the NFL. When he returns home, his attraction to Eloise is stronger than ever. She has always been it for him, but to make a move risks the life long friendship he has with her and her brother. He knows he needs to come to terms with his past and figure out what he wants soon because Eloise was just accepted to a scholarship program in Arizona, which will put an ocean between them.
This was a lovely read. It definitely picked up at the 50% mark. Nate’s back story was profound and it made total sense why he made some boneheaded mistakes with Eloise. This book features a secluded cabin in the woods, a nosy grandmother who hits on everyone’s boyfriends, an exceptionally well-trained dog, and some grade A romance. The ending was really beautiful! While Alice and Owen are still my favorite couple in Wattle Junction, The Story of Us was a great follow up to The Reality of Us.
Tropes: friends to lovers, brother’s best friend, cabin in the woods, slow burn.
Reading this lovely story gave me a serious case of all the feels, all the heartwarming truths about love and loss and starting over and building a future with one's soulmate. Nate and Eloise are just so darn perfect for each other and their romance is one of the best I've ever read.
Nate, for all his successes, still has his insecurities and a rather disqualifying characteristic that keeps him from pursuing his heart's desire. Eloise is stuck with her own set of insecurities as well, but she's got to put all that aside if she wants to win the art scholarship of a lifetime.
There's plenty of low-key drama as Nate and Eloise work out what their insane chemistry means while getting ready for Owen and Alice's wedding. I love Joanie so much - I want to be her when I grow up. All the citizens of Wattle Junction are just delightful folks and I really enjoyed getting to hang out with them throughout this book.
The best part is the plot twist that inspired the title - novelist Nate writes the story he wants to live - and if that doesn't make you swoon, you need to have your pulse checked. Every bit of this story works beautifully and I couldn't have loved it more. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This was a cute small town, brothers best friend, friends to lovers, slow burn style romance. The story features the FMC, Eloise and the MMC, Nate. Eloise is ambitious and aspirational. Nate is literally the chemical compounds that sugar is made of. He is so sweet and delicious. The individual character development was very well portrayed. I also enjoyed the development of their relationship. It was a bit of an emotional roller coaster and the buildup of their chemistry was chef’s kiss.👩🏾🍳💋
Overall, the story had a cozy vibe and the writing was well done. The storyline was engaging and I really enjoyed the side characters. They were oh so sassy and I freakin LUVed it! My favorite character was Ms. Joanie. Several parts literally had me snickering and even laughing out loud. Also, the pet inclusion in the storyline was a great addition. The 🐾 pet lovers will love this, Echo was adorable!! 😻 Make sure to add this to your summer TBR. Overall, I really liked this read and look forward to reading more by this author.
Please be aware that sensitive issues are discussed in this so proceed with caution . I have not mentioned them in order to prevent spoilers, but the author provides warnings in the beginning of the book.⚠️
