John Evans was an odd man. A lecturer in English Literature, he used dry-as-dust tools such as Russian Formalism and Schema Theory to dissect works he thought of as machinery rather than art, and the same tools to view the world and the people around him. Then he came home one day, to find his wife occupied, occupied by another man. Then a new student turned up, an ex-soldier, maimed by a roadside bomb, and the tools were suddenly useless. Things were coming back to John, and they brought the darkness with them.

I am Steph Calvert, and the thing that most people pick up on is that I am transgendered. That doesn't make me special, but it does influence my writing. I will be blunt: I write love stories. I don't mean fluffy bodice-rippers involving a lot of smouldering, but stories set in the real world, or at least as real as I can make it. Warts and all, but infused throughout with Pandora's gift. How could anyone live without hope?
Most of my stories are tied together with one brutal event, and while I have not written the details, and will not, it is the effects on other people that generate the tales. I make no apologies for the brutality in some of the scenes, just as I make no excuses for the bits where True Love...well, you know the schema.

Once again Ms Calvert brings another of her stories to kindle.

This is not one of the "Border" series; but a Stand-alone tale (of two parts originally) merged into one.

John, the protagonist, finds his life turned upside down when he catches his wife with another man.

Suddenly; his sense of "self" is thrown into chaos as the "dark places" in his past resurface; and he discovers that he isn't actually He but She.

This tale is dark in places; as the past is rediscovered, but good will ultimately triumph; and Ms Calverts unique style and humour; which comes through in all her work, makes John someone you would be happy to know.

Five Stars Ms Calvert.
