I said it once, and I'll say it again, I can't believe how fucking good the Power Ranger comics are.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Year One by Kyle Higgins offers a fantastic entry point into the world of the Power Rangers comics. While it may feel a little jarring at first for those unfamiliar with the classic show, it's a proper reimagining that will resonate deeply with fans who grew up on the original.

This collection, which compiles the first year of BOOM! Studios' hit comic series, provides a more mature and character-driven take on the classic story. It's filled with all the same familiar characters but adds new layers of depth by exploring the psychological toll of their responsibilities. For example, the series delves into the struggles of Tommy Oliver (the Green Ranger) as he deals with the aftermath of Rita Repulsa's mind control, leading to excellent character moments and heightened stakes.

Beyond the serious character beats, the comic delivers the campy, action-packed fun that made the original show so beloved. It has all the epic Zord transformations and dynamic fights that fans crave. If you enjoy sci-fi action, giant robots, and superhero drama, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Year One is the perfect place to start.

This was excellent. My only gripe is the Bulk and Skull story at the end is subpar compared to the rest of the volume.
Highly Recommend.

The main story is a surprisingly well thought out and solid read, that finds a way to see through the goofiness that was present in the show (I say that with a lot of love!) and build something really quite cool out of it! The characters are all the same ones that you'd know and love from the show, but have been modernised and given a bit more character depth. The use of the Green Ranger (coincidentally my favourite ranger :P) is really well done, as it deals a lot with the conflicts that stem from his origins as an evil ranger. To say any more than this might ruin a few awesome plot points, so I'll leave it there. But this series has been constructed with a lot of love, and that shows throughout.
There are some over-the-top goofy back-up stories starring Bulk and Skull which I could take or leave, but the main story is where it's at with this book!

"The best way I've been able to describe what I wanted to do on this book is that I didn't want to write POWER RANGERS as they existed. I didn't even want to write them as I remember them. I wanted to write them as I remember them making me feel."

-Kyle Higgins, in his Afterward

I love this quote, because I feel like it's the best way to adapt material that is nominally for an audience of children, upscaled to be for adults with nostalgia for the material instead. IDW made this formula work beautifully with their Transformers books, especially the "More Than Meets the Eye/Robots in Disguise" co-monthlies... and Image is doing the same, although from a different angle, with their Energon Universe. And love it or hate it, this was definitely the tactic J.J. Abrams et al. took with their STAR TREK reboot. Taking something a little dated, a little goofy, and a little low-budget, and bringing the quality, stakes, and passion to the forefront because that's what you felt when you saw the work in the first place? That's a wonderful goal, and it works like gangbusters when it's done right.

So it absolutely baffles me that the book ends up trying to have it both ways, and does a silly, doofy Bulk and Skull back-up strip that completely annihilate the tone of the lead story and cuts the drama of the story off at its knees. Those back-ups were the whole reason I didn't read this series in single issues, and in combination with the wildly out-of-tone Mairghread Scott short, took a star off of this review.

What started off as nostalgic interest led to my new favorite series. What can I say? I'm hooked! The first MMPR story arc from Boom! Studios revisits the evil Green Ranger storyline. Though a modern take on the Rangers, this story takes place after the Green With Evil story from the first season of the original Power Rangers show. Tommy is struggling with the psychological aftereffects of having been under Rita's control. With each chapter, Tommy draws closer to Rita, forcing readers into a "will he or won't he" state of mind. When the twist finally does arrive, it's fulfilling, unpredictable, and doesn't fall into the lazy retread of what has come before. Art-wise, things are consistently great. Additionally, the characters are developed very well, adding layers to your favorite Rangers from childhood. My only qualm with this collection is that it ends on a cliffhanger. It's tough reading a book this size and not reaching a satisfying conclusion. Finally, there are some smaller stories at the end that connect well with the main storyline (and even some Bulk & Skull material that is hit or miss depending on how your feel about them), and a HUGE section of art, mainly cover galleries. For Power Rangers fans, this comes with my HIGHEST possible recommendation. New fans will find a lot to love as well. Can't wait for Year Two, though just like Saga and Papergirls, I will most likely switch to smaller volumes because I just can't wait to see what happens next!

Man, I remember parts of this way differently than they happened, and it's screwing with my mind. That being said, it was also very, very fun to read this while waiting for a couple panels to be over so I could get this poster signed by every single author at an event. Not just because it killed time, but because it was genuinely fun.

As someone who never got into Power Rangers, and doesn't plan on watching the original show, this is surprisingly accessible to newbies.

No doubt I'm missing out on some stuff, but it's still fun for someone who doesn't really know the Power Rangers. (I did see the reboot movie, so I probably know more than most people - but not nearly as much as many reading this series.)

"IT'S MORPHIN' TIME!"
After loving the TV show as a kid, I went back to watch it but it had'nt aged well, so I thought I would give the comics a go and they were great! The show had a very thin story arc, but these comics are clearely planned out and aimed towards us fans from the 90's......

Kyle Higgins does a fantastic job converting the original power rangers to the comic book format. This is a new story and not just a retelling of stories depicted in the show. My only complaint is that you are left on a bit of a cliffhanger as this is an ongoing monthly series. Can't wait for year 2 to come out to see how the story progresses. This collection is filled with a ton of backmatter including each variant cover released and an afterward by Higgins.

Worth a read for any fan that grew up watching the original series.

Much more action packed and story driven than the gogo stuff which in comparison feels more focused on being a teen drama. This book found a nice balance between character development and story development. The cover section in the back is excessive and unnecessary.
Overall I really enjoyed reading this again.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Year One was a great setup for a successful comic run of this popular tv show.

Kyle Higgins does a great job of reintroducing this iconic cast in a modern way without reinventing them. We are thrown into the story after Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, shortly breaks the spell from the evil Reta Repulsa, and joins the team as the newest Ranger. We see him struggle to fit in and earn the trust from his teammates as well as struggling to fight Reta who is still in his head, filling him with self doubt. This is where some hardcore fans might struggle with this story because your main cast of characters is written in a more realistic take, not always as warm, trusting, and forgiving as they were in the show. So fans might like it, others won’t.

I felt like one of the struggles in this volume was the pacing. You can tell that Higgins has a lot of great ideas for this series, and that he couldn’t tell right away if he’d get the time to tell them. I felt like we were rushed through Tommy’s growing pains and thrown right into the conflict with the Black Dragon, an evil Zord-like creature that quickly takes down the Rangers and brings Rita to power on Earth. This is something huge to happen within the first 5 issues of the series, which I guess sets the stage for the magnitude of this series, but felt a little sudden. Again, I feel like this is something that either readers will like or won’t, because it does fit with the tone of the story. The Rangers are caught off guard and have to quickly trust Tommy who is the only Ranger left with his powers.

This book also introduces us to Lord Drakkon, an evil version of Tommy from a dimension where the Green Ranger continues to work with Rita after her spell is broken to take out the Power Rangers and take over the world. This takes the series to an even darker place than the show ever ventured, and sets up some very interesting story arcs that could take place.

The art in this series varies a bit. Hendry Prasetya does the art for the main storyline, which is good, but when you see the art in some of the backup stories and especially the hundreds of variant covers in the back of this book, it leaves a little to be desired. There are a handful of backup stories that range from better art than the main story to very cartoonish and kiddish, so it’s a pretty wide range. 3/4 of this book makes up the main story, while the other fourth is a handful of backups and a ton of variant covers. Just like certain elements of this series, some readers will like that, others won’t. Myself I was torn because as cool as it was to get so much bonus material, for the price and size of the book I couldn’t help but wish more of it was the actual story. The build, however, is very impressive, that put most hardcovers and omnibus’ today to shame, with a slick design to the cover front-to-back, and thick, glossy pages that give you a sense that these books will hold up for a very long time.

Overall, I had fun with this book. While I wasn’t always completely on board with some elements to this story and book, it’s potential, where it’s gone so far, and it’s setup for the next volume make me excited to continue on to the next volume.

"Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Año Uno" es el primer tomo recompilatorio de la saga de cómics de Power Rangers, contiene los primeros tres volumenes además de una historia exclusiva.

Este tomo abarca los arcos argumentales conocidos como: "Green Ranger, Year One" y "Black Dragon".

Volumen Uno: 3 ★
Contiene los números del 0 al 4 de la saga. Abarca el arco: Green Ranger, Year One.

From Here to Despair: 3 ★
"De aquí a la Desesperación" es un relato exclusivo que nos muestra a un futuro Jason (el Red Ranger) en una travesía a través del Desierto de la Desesperación para encontrar a Ninjor, una leyenda en el mundo de la morfósis, para conseguir la misteriosa Luz Blanca que los ayudará en una lucha que se avecina.

It’s amazing to me how excellent the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics are at Boom. This collection makes of the first year of their Power Rangers book and when I first started reading, I thought it would be a nostalgia trip to Power Rangers actuality, Kyle Higgins gives the story a lot more depth that I would expect from Power Rangers book. giving the characters flaws, complex emotions, and feelings towards the situation, they faced, gives Power Rangers more depth, making the characters more third dimensional, then their first dimension TV equivalent, this book also isn’t a one for one retelling of the TV series. I like that it goes. It’s on way and goes to a lot of fun. Directions alternate universe sure messing with lore like the Morphin grid let’s go for it. The art is excellent it’s not photo realistic but that’s fine. Each character is distinctive and I know who they are. I guess if you’re expecting more of a traditional fight action series, I would read author Power Rangers books. This feels more like a long-term drama while there is fight sequences it’s not happening all the time. That’s a wise choice. If it was just fight sequences nonstop then you would get bored and start to zone out . I love this book and if you are a Power Rangers fan, I highly recommend it.

“It’s Morphin’ Time!” ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Year One’ takes place immediately after Tommy Oliver, the Green Power Ranger, breaks free from Rita Repulsa's curse and joins the team, but he still hears Rita's voice in his head, putting the rest of the Power Rangers in danger. Now they must face their most deadliest threat yet, the Black Dragon, and uncover an even more twisted secret it holds.

I've been obsessed with Power Rangers since I was a kid, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. From Mighty Morphin to the latest seasons, I've been hooked. Reading 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Year One' was like a blast from the past, but with way cooler villains and more relatable Rangers. I mean, who wouldn't want to read about a parallel universe where the Rangers have to fight their deadliest foe, Lord Drakkon?

MMPR: Year One has been a surprisingly enjoyable experience, offering a fresh perspective on the Power Rangers that I didn't realize I was missing. This graphic novel has left me eager to dive into the next installment.

I don't have a huge attachment to the MMPR, although like every other person my age I grew up with them and still have some nostalgia for their adventures on Fox Kids. I'm late to the party on these comics - they set the world on fire like five years ago at this point. My brother-in-law really likes them and owns the nice hardcovers so I've finally taken the dive.

Higgins has made a name for himself in superhero comics and those skills translate well to the MMPR, which he writes in a similar fashion. Which makes sense, of course, as they're superhero characters. What I mean is that he writes much more concise, big-stakes character stories rather than monster of the week madness. His focus on Tommy the Green Ranger at his moment of redemption was a strong choice, and it's neat how he uses and expands the established Ranger mythology to introduce new heroes and villains.

It's just good, no-nonsense superhero comics: perfect to read on the Friday before a 3 day weekend.

I would like to preface by saying, I was an absolute Power Rangers fanatic as a child. I grew up obsessing over the show, the action figures and clothing. I remember watching some of the movies as well. Now, if you’re thinking about reading this comic as an adult with the hopes of it being less campy…sure BUT the standard is still, the show. Meaning, it’s just a bit less cheesy with tons of eye rolling moments, followed by loud exaggerate “Oh boys.”

The storyline is childish in Year One of this beautiful deluxe edition of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I can’t seem to stop cringing anytime the pages read “ITS MORPHING TIME!!” Nevertheless, I purchased all of these books in deluxe format, and I have no other choice, but to give them a try. The little me from the 90’s would appreciate the old me doing it for him.

Always a strong beginning with this book. The only experience I have with the power rangers before this collected edition is one episode and the 2017 live action movie. This beats both!

You don't have to have all the knowledge and know all the lore. But your curiosity to want to learn and get to know the characters is what makes the story flow. You get that they are three dimensioner characters little by little. Especially Tommy that the main arc focuses around.

To be able to read the Boom studios run if Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the first time ever since first reading this volume 5 years ago will definitely be something!

Thoroughly enjoyed this imagination of MMPR when Tommy joins the team. Have only ever consumed Power Rangers through the tv show and due to their usage of preexisting Japanese footage, budget, and the time (90’s/00’s), the comic allows for the story to give us so much more. Battles across the globe, a look inside the Zords (where we’ve only ever seen the interior the cockpits on tv), and exploring different relationships and character dynamics we hadn’t seen before. Need to read the next volume ASAP 🙂‍↕️

This is my first comic book, after investing in three of these big ol’ expensive books. I loved Power Rangers as a kid, and still love their costume design, so I figured I’d check out these modernized re-telling of their story! It was pretty fun. I’m going to keep going, as there are a couple more books before the overarching story is completed.
Figuring out which books to buy in order to get the whole story has been a little confusing, but I think I got it. I still definitely prefer novels, but this is a pretty fun way to experience the Power Rangers.

This is set after Tommy joins the Power Rangers. He is struggling with the burden of being previously controlled by Rita Repulsa, seeing visions and planting seeds of doubt. He doesn't feel like he quite fits in. There's quite a lot of events across the collection, being quite similar to a plot to a film. Rita is trying to power up a gem which she uses to imitate Tommy's dagger and use his Zord. A powerful mechanical monster Black Dragon teams up with Rita, and uses the gem to remove the main Power Rangers' connection to the Morphin Grid, leaving only Tommy with powers. Things escalate when Tommy and Billy end up in an alternate dimension where Lord Drakkon (alternate Tommy) is a dominant force. At the end of the collection there are a few random stories, but the ones featuring Bulk And Skull seem more simplistic and childish, completely contrasting in tone compared to the main work. Then there's around 100 alternate covers and concept art.

It’s power rangers, without the corny tv show gags, a more hard hitting realistic scenario. Great starting point for people interested in power rangers, clear character development. Some of the best artwork I’ve seen in comics a great read from start to end. Only issue was I would have liked more issues than what was in here, especially for the price charged, a little tight in my opinion but that’s the only downfall. Highly recommend to anyone.

Very good! Certainly better than I ever remember the TV show being. It’s lighthearted, action packed and character driven comic hero adventure done very well, with cool artwork and fun times. No complains for me… at least, not from the actual comic. My big complaint is that 1/3 of this huge hardcover is entirely devoted to covers and concept art. Feels a little misleading. I’d happily have sacrificed that for more story. Anyway, still a good read if you can track down an affordable copy.

Story was good. I may have preferred if it had stayed set in the 90s, but the emotions of the teenagers all made sense and the greater conflict was interesting, .

The artwork was mostly good; the covers were great but sometimes the actual artwork of the comics was sloppy and I couldn't immediately identify who the character was.

The evil green ranger stuff is modernized in interesting ways, and the alternate Lord Drakkon stuff is very very compelling. It doesn't quite get to a point where I am absolutely enthralled, but this first year deluxe edition really sets up a lot of stuff I am pumped to read. Not quite as good as the prequel series Go Go Power Rangers, and I think the art is a step down from that as well, but still a very fun read and gets me excited to tear through this all

Super enjoyable even if the show was after your time.

This arc primarily focuses on Tommy joining the team and how the Rangers struggle to trust a new meme we should was created by their nemesis.

The rangers lose their powers, split Tommy’s power and all become a Green ranger, Tommy and Billy get transported by the Black Dragon to another reality and meet Tommy as the White Ranger.

This was the comic that got me back into comics after a bit of a break, as it demonstrated to me adaptive power of the comic book medium. Nowhere else can you do something like this- lovingly distilling the oddball, martial arts melodrama of the original series, maintaining the original voice of the characters, and updating the lore and world, progressing the story forwards.

In the words of the author - this captures how the Power Rangers made us feel and is reimagined to focus on the core of what makes the Power Rangers - the power of friendship and the dynamics of these legendary heroes.

The Drakon story arc is so widely praised by the ranger community that it is practically canon now. May Jason David Frank rest in peace. What a legacy green ranger he was.

Super fun mighty morphin’ power punch of nostalgia. A great area of the narrative to explore, the time when Tommy had just joined the team. Higgins wonderfully captures the original show’s sense of pure fun. The digression with Zac was a standout for me. Excellent artwork. Gonna have to pick up the next volume to keep the fun rolling.

Loved the book! I’m going to admit at first I wasn’t really digging it but I gave it 2-3 issues and I was hooked. The twist and turns this series gives you are awesome. The only downside I have is the art can be rough in some areas but the Zords are drawn beautifully.
