‘No one will invest in a business focussed on family violence – it’s the opposite of sexy.’
Lauren Brown, owner of Weeping Angels, smiled. ‘Maybe to men.’

Business is booming for Weeping Angels – an agency that helps victims of family violence obtain protection orders. Lauren, who ambitiously wants to fix the justice system, contacts journalist Grace (‘Ace’) Marks to increase pressure on the government. A woman who obsessively guards her privacy and her past, Lauren knows she will need to step out of the shadows where she has lived her entire life.
When Lauren disappears after visiting a friend, and the police list her as ‘just another’ missing person, a mystified Grace investigates. But who is Lauren? Is that her real name? What sinister forces are at work in her disappearance? And why can’t the police find out where she lives?
Grace, determined to discover what’s happened to Lauren, has a problem – where to start.

Last year I really enjoyed Riley Chance's 'Democracy Game', a New Zealand political thriller that time is shifting more and more towards a true story. This year her latest novel takes us into a world of family violence and religious cults.
Lauren Brown runs a company called Weeping Angels which helps victims of family violence obtain protection orders. Lauren has always been fiercely protective of her own privacy, for very good reasons, but now she is being forced into the open.
Grace Marks, a character from her previous novel, starts to investigate Lauren's disappearance, but soon has to call in favours from her super-spy Marla. This is the duo that worked so well together in The Democracy Game.

Once again, I very much enjoyed a Riley Chance /Grace Marks tale.
This one deals with family violence - as one character in the book says, it is hardly a sexy subject. But the fact that I stayed in my pyjamas until I had finished the book will illustrate how gripping it is.
Along with his first 2 novels, Surveillance and The Democracy Game, this also features Grace "Ace Marks, RNZ investigative reporter extraordinaire, and Marla, the shadowy, secretive US agent in hiding, who you first encounter in Surveillance.
You don't have to read the books in order, but I do think it explains Marla's character more if you do.

Lauren, the central character, has had a dreadful forced marriage in a cult. She escapes and sets up a business working tirelessly for abused women, unable to access the justice system. Given the abuse the women have to deal with, helping them is no walk in the park for Lauren. She also has demons from her own past that she is secretive about.

It's fast paced, well written, well plotted and of course it's set in New Zealand. Even to the extent that you can look up settings on the map - St James Church, Tainui Tce and Kauri Loop Track! I wonder if the folk who live by that track realize how close they are to the fictional story!

Read it! You'll be turning those pages into the night.
