HEIRS OF WAR box set by JAMIE EDMUNDSON

AN INHERITANCE OF ASH AND BLOOD:
Have you any idea HOW good this box set is??? I read the books approximately 2 years ago and when I saw the box set was on sale, I snapped it up! I love having a series I can binge on, without scrolling through hundreds of books. So I did me a reread... and holy moly the way the series sucked me under, I was lost within seconds. From the prologue in book 1, I was under a thrall, eager to discover more. It's a beautifully complex plot which honestly had me on the edge of my seat. There are allegiances that flipflop all the time, loyalties are constantly questioned and battles are full of angst, blood and gore, the outcome never certain, the depth and scope of the characters is fully explored, as ones imagination takes hold of the magnitude of the storytelling, a feat the author does superbly! The senseless need for war, for power overrides all scruples and morals. But the threat is not only from the neighbouring power hungry individuals, no, the real threat is far greater than anyone could imagine. An otherworldly threat, who would subverse all. Sanc is an outcast among his family, he's different, well, red eyes sure stand out! I adored him, I loved watching him grow into his power, I loved his cool dog Rab, I loved that he had the support of 2 friends, Jesper and Rimmon as he tries to solve the mystery. I was captivated by this world of strife, of horror and the emotional jostling of Sanc, his siblings, Esterel and Peyre, one kind and caring, the other terse and just otherwise. The characters were easy to follow, they were very individual and complex. Well, except for Salvinius, he is the best of baddies, his enjoyment of inflicting pain on others and his duplicitous nature, I instantly disliked him. And his obsession with Liesel make me want to hurl! Like no! As with any epic fantasy, there is more going on than meets the eye and this author's dazzling account, dazzled me!

A CRUCIBLE OF FIRE:
This book was just a marvel! It grabbed my attention from the very beginning and only releasing me at the very end. What a magnificent read! What a magnificent complex tale! Lots of characters, sure, but goodness do these characters come alive! All of them! Wrapping me up in a cocoon, holding me fast until the cocoon gave way and the beauty of the story emerged fully into a magnificent butterfly with wings spread wide as I soared with the book! Sanc finds himself on another world where nothing is familiar, yet is. War has no scruples and war will flourish no matter where. It was awesome to see how Sanc traverses this world and the people he meets. Fabulously seamless introduction of new characters, who, as the rest of this author's characters, are as easy to understand as the rest. This book is told from two fronts, one in the world Sanc is and one in the world he left behind. Both accounts are exceptionally told, Sanc trying to find a way home, Esterel finding his place as king, Liesel finally escaping her brother's clutches and unrequited love for Peyre. The senseless need for war, for power overrides all scruples and morals. But the dark entity is the major threat, though not all see it. The beauty of the the author's storytelling is crystal clear, there's no mundane characters, no idea what to expect next, Jamie kept me riveted, holding my breath at times as the drama unfolds. What I do enjoy is how, amidst all the war, greed and gore, there is an underlying goodness and strength in the characters, a trait that makes them likeable, to the point it's impossible to "choose" a favourite character. The richness of Jamie's world building, the richness of his characters, the richness of his storytelling, is marvelous!

A RECKONING OF STORMS AND SHADOWS:
As I eagerly plunged into the final book, all I could think was, what a rich story and series. I'd liken it to a beautiful, tasty feast set out before me, with so many dishes the glutton in me consumes it all. Each character is like a dish so tasty, the pleasure of partaking is immensely satisfying. With so many scrumptious courses at my fingertips, my head was going back and forth trying to decide which was the most exciting. But heck, it was ALL equally exciting, equally mouthwatering, equally delicious, all equally favourite. The assortment and diversity was divine, going from one set of characters to the next, from different POV's, sets an outstanding tale laden with action at every turn. Action so rife with tension, the pounding in my veins threatened to do me in. From the magical to brutality, my wincing was real. The author thoroughly took the reins and led me through this minefield, expertly.

But it's the characters who ensnared me, seeing some become "more" like Peyre and Liesel and seeing others become "less" as was the case with Esterel. Geez, I really liked him, his kindness, his empathy for his people, his sense of right, all got washed away with his actions. And the otherwise, reticent Peyre came out as my very favourite.
As much as I love Sanc and Liesel and Idris and Loysse and the rest of this magnificent cast, Peyre took hold of me.The depth of him growth is a magnificent evolution, truth be told, all the characters are, not one has stagnated, not one has fallen by the wayside, they're all given the devotion they deserve by the author, and golly DO they deserve it!

The author kept me on my toes throughout my journey, just as I began to think the story is going one way, he sent a boomerang at me, soundly knocking me back on HIS path. So many times was the rug pulled out from under me, I was honestly battered and bruised!

A glorious conclusion to the series, culminating in a stunning vista of impressive magnitude, with heart stopping moments, with heart wrenching moments and with heart warming moments. And even as I begun to despair if it was at all possible amidst so much strife, war and devastation, the hope that permeates throughout and the extremely cleverly depicted HEA, brings me back to my opulent feast, consumed with gusto, even though some dishes were less palatable than others, I was definitely left with an awesome satiated fullness.

Epic story!

I have read all the books in the 2 sets of The Chronicles of Dalriya and can truly say they are a must-read for anyone who enjoys the fantasy genre of books. Both sets take into the hearts and minds of each character. You will find yourself reflected in each one at different times as you read. The world building is well done, and the fight action pulls you in as if you're there. You can feel the stresses and complexity of emotions of all the characters. The story lines holds you and pulls you in the more you read. A timeless set of books that needs to be shared.
