There is only room for one god of death on this plane of existence, and her name is Maud Greenleaf, Spinster of This Parish and Empress of Einheath.
Done with everything, this not-so-frozen-hearted lich queen is out for one final rampage and this time, the prize is the soul of the world. Do or die. Again. The stakes are high, the board is set. More than just Maud's crafting stash is on the line. She has a fabulous skirt, bombs in her bloomers, undead minions in the millions, and an unshakable urge to murder anyone who gets in her way.
If the Whisperer's brain wasn't getting eaten by parasites he'd probably be terrified.
The final grisly adventure. Trigger warning for gore and eyeballs.
There is nothing to dislike about this book. From the very first page, I was caught like a fish on a hook. The unique pantheon, the unlikely hero, the excellent world building, all combined with an excellent writer, and make no mistake: HJ Tolson can write! One of the best part about this is that the story ends . This is not a never ending series with the next book in the next book in the next book continue to deteriorate in quality. This is a strong story that stands on its own, and I am very glad to have found it .
I loved Maud and her story! I'm only sorry it's finished. I chuckled so many times at her silliness and other fun quirks. After reading this I wish I could go be a grump in the woods with my cat. Thanks for a great story!
Edit July 2025 - Litches Get Scritches made for a great companion novel!
While I don’t want to say goodbye to my girl Maud, and for most of the book I couldn’t imagine being OK with her journey ending, this book actually did an amazing job wrapping everything up satisfactorily. The mystery plotlines are resolved in epic, outlandish (outrealmish) ways. Even if shit gets serious, the classical dry Maud voice and humor are a gift that keeps on giving. My favorite things from this final installment: undead pirate captain going down with the ship (for the 2nd time) and sheepishly continuing to hang out underwater; the SPOOK almost sci-fi VIBES of the Whisperer’s phylactery planet; Maud’s fear to die was so touching when she’s spent so much time convincing herself and us as readers that she Has Non Emotions apart from Grouchy. Also, getting up and close with the gods was fantastic.
Can’t wait for the upcoming Jenkins stories—but I am very happy with how this series wrapped up.
This on the whole has been a very enjoyable series and this is an enjoyable conclusion to Mauds story. This one wastes no time, effectively plowing through significant plot at a breakneck pace. I’m quite happy with how it ended though.
I loved this series! Imagine a hedge witch who accidently becomes a powerful undead. She continues to love to knit, garden, craft, and make potions, only now she crafts with dead bodies, and her potions are made with undead ingredients. All she wants to do is live in peace in her quiet cottage working on her crafting. All others want to do is kill her. In book one we see her deal with conflicts with the local barony. In book 2 she deals with another undead Lich and his kingdom. In books 3, 4, and 5 she manages disputes with the fae queen of summer and other powerful characters. The dry humor in this story is delightful, especially when it comes to her knitting and embroidery. I highly recommend this series.
I’ve loved all of these books. Maude is a brilliant character full of life - ironically as she’s a lich. A brilliant well thought out ending . An excellent well crafted world of magic and gods. Devoured this book in one sitting. I really hope the author writes more within this world as there’s all sorts she could do .
Maude is one of my favourite characters of all time, and I’ve read thousands of books by now I’m sure 😂. She has even made me want to take up knitting ! Such a clever, humorous engaging story with characters you fall in love with. Would give the series 10 stars if I could
I listened to the first four again for a refresher, and I’m so glad I did. Wow, the final book was incredible. Without giving anything away, I couldn't've asked for a more fitting end. I will definitely keep a lookout for any other works this author produces. Thank you and well done.
Just as fun as always. This series fills me with joy. I love the world, but more, I love the characters. I'll be thinking about this series for a long time
A satisfying ending to a great series. I just wished it would have more of the great side characters I've come to love instead of just focusing on Maud.
Handshakes all around, we made it you guys. Liches has been such a delightful romp, and this end? So lovely. So wholesome. The cozy cottage-gore dream is REAL and it is HERE. My only complaint is that I want more epilogues!!! If we don't get at least a Fairhaven Girls short lil one-shot, imma RIOT. jkjk ilu, cannot wait for whatever's next 👏👏👏
So sad Maud's journey is over. I highly recommend this fantasy series if you don't mind a little humor and gore. The Beastie sounds horrible and yet so adorable at the same time. You really develop a love for the characters...even the undead. Such a whirlwind journey.
